The sad part is, with all of the gold owned by the US today, if it should sell it at the current market price, it wouldn't cover the debt. The same for the few Europen countries facing the same debt issues. This is why I pray that with the amount of gold been discover in my country Liberia by companies, plus oil, the government should have an agreement with these investors to use whatever oil money we get to buy back 50% of all gold produce in our country. That should provide a safety net.
