Hay dude grate camera isnt it? I got one in Jan (i got the 17-85IS lens kit but i tend to use my 17-40 lens on it and keep the 71-85 on the 400D for light work) To tell the truth i want to throw the thing out the window now. The wired shooting isn't working anymore and the camera wont connect to the computer at all so i kinda need to have faith in my card reader lol. Hope i can find a way to fix it but i don't hold out much hope as i've already taken it out and re-installed it twice to no avail.
Large prints of your works? I'm pretty curious to see what masterpiece needs so large prints where a 10MP print isn't enough. But dont worry, this year 60D will come up, and you will be able to stamp still mooore larger prints.
what the hell do you know about me to be saying that, I travel a lot and needed a second body, the 30 d became my second camera so i wasnt always changing the lenses, the dust shake reeduction on the 40d was more than worth the upgrade, don't you have anything better to do than insult people you know nothing about, grow up
i'm not insulting anyone, i just said my opinion! A guy who replaced 30d for 40d, and now again raplaced for 50d its not a photographer for me, just a money waster who like to get the last model of camera, watch, phone, and car. that's all.
again you don't know what you are talking about, i sold the 30d to a struggling photographer friend as i need the extra mp from the 50d as i am now making large prints of my work. the 40d is now my backup camera. your opinion isn't worth anything if you don't have the facts and is uninformed. the real money is spent on glass and the bodies are cheap and replaceable, they are just tools
With canon offering a $200 discount on this camera, it is such a great buy almost in the range of of an 450 Xsi, but with a much superior build and feel. I have used prosumer POS cameras before, but this camera is so easy to learn. The picture quality is great. I have researched a few sites such as DPReview, Camera Labs, and other reviews and this camera, at this point offers best value. If you get one, very likely that you will be happy. I am, only regret is that I did not get it sooner.
You say that once you start with a line (ie Canon/Nikon etc) that you are stuck with it. I would have to disagree. You stated the reason for this being the glass that you have already purchased. Glass holds it's value very well and can typically be sold with only a 10-15% loss in value if you took care of it. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
I just bought my first dSLR, the 40d with a Canon EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 IS USM lens + a sunfilter and a 8gb memory card. Looking forward to getting some great pictures once I've read through some books and practised much:)great camera with an excellent lens!
I just got my 40D. I have a 350d too. The difference in build quality and feel is incredible. The menus are slightly better too. Also got a sigma 50 - 500mm lens and a 2 x converter... wow, brings the world to you!
the 40D will be great as a first SLR, but a 400D would be fine, is much cheaper and also has 10MP.
I wanna buy my first slr, i like doing portraits but also like doing lanscapes, pretty much everything. And im stuck on which one to buy i like the 40D, but i like the price of the xti, any advice.
Not everyone likes to buy a POS for their first camera... your "laughing" and comment was ignorant. I am seriously thinking about buying a 40d for my first SLR too.
if you can afford whats the problem to star with an excellent camera? today canon and sony ,for example, have a huge number of digiral point and shoot cameras that you can control almost evertything manually, they´re not SLRs, but you can learn a LOT with them...+ that if you dont have a dslr yet, that doesnt mean that you dont have any experience with it
I also started with a 10D. Also a prosumer camera. The 40D probably is much easier than the 10D. 40D has picturestyle, liveview and all the EFS lenses will fit on the body. And boy those lenses are cheap.
I'm using the 28-135 IS, trying to take pics of my sons remote helicopter, by the time it(beeps) focuses the heli is out of focus. Need more practice right?
If "IS" is enabled, it will slow you down. It does "focus" first, then "IS" so it will inevitably take longer. If you are shooting outdoors in daylight, shooting ISO100-200 you shouldn't need IS, so shut it off.
I wuold get the Nikon D80 then or the Nikon D200 semipro camera, the reason why I would get the D80 it is because the D80 comes with a 18-70mm lense in the standard kit. I am saving mony to by the Canon EOS 400D because the D80 is to expensive for me. I hope I have helpt you!
either system is great. I bought canon 5 years ago with the original rebel so Once I bought a few lenses the cost to switch rose so I will stay with Canon.
Allot of folks I know use the Canon brands, which is why I am leaning heavily towards Canon (plus I happen to be happy with my Canon MP600 all-in-one printer).
I just want to know where I can go to either take a class or learn more about SLR and the various types of lens before making the initial investment.
Lol... You have exactly the same kit lens for my eos 7D, ef 24-70....... its a great lense, use it a lot for my school work...

make sure you have an idea of what is PENTAMIRROR and PENTAPRISM. And decide what to buy.
I'll go for 40D as my 1st DSLR camera.

I just upgraded from a 350d xt, I find that the 40d has a slower automatic focus, does that depend on what mode your shooting on?
Thanx

Try the fastest shutter speed you can use on that lens, that might help cause then you can just focus in and shoot straight away... i think :P
Anonymous96669 4 years ago
Try using the AF function, AI Servo. It will constantly keep your moving subject in focus.

I (currently) have a point and shoot and want to buy an SLR sometime soon.
I hear Canon and Nikon are the best - leaning heavily towards the Canon line.
I don't want something too expensive or too cheap - something I can grow with, not outgrow anytime soon.
