Is Dorothy Hamill really 52 years in this clip? Iknow little about the sport of figure skating but I can appreciate a great looking woman! But i do notice that todays skating looks a little more athletic and not as aesthetic as yesteryear, or is it just me? Either way this performance is a thing of beauty and Dorothy Hamill is G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S!
She is ageless and she is in great shape. The reason these "older" skaters still appeal on the ice is they have flawless technique - Dorothy, Robin Cousins, Janet Lynn, etc. We all want to MOVE like they do. No triples as they age but still a joy to watch.
Wow! That spin at the end is better than most skaters do today! All of her spins are impeccable. The overall effect of her skating is very soothing to me, she's still amazing!
Choreography by Tim Murphy, for sure.....I've been in one of his skating classes in Baltimore....she makes it look soooooo easy! She is one of the few skaters that actually SKATE these days...so beautiful!
It always surprises me how few skaters actually time their movements to the phrasing of the music. Yes, they have to focus on tough requirements but there's nothing easy about Dorothy's delay-Axel, long edges, textbook spins or voluptuous loop turns. So much could be learned by looking at the full patterns she cuts and the way the skating and the music are integral and interdependent.
Programs these days can be skated to any random musical selection it seems.
I agree. When there is a skater who can combine difficult elements and transitions that DIRECTLY EXPRESS the music the way Dorothy does through the execution of her choreography, I'll have a new favorite skater. I'm still waiting.
All these years after winning Olympic Gold, and she is just so graceful, smooth, and elegant on the ice. She truly makes it look easy. Still my favorite skater of all time. While she can't triple jump like today's little girls, there's so many little things she puts in there (walley jumps, near-compulsory figure sequence) that is ignored nowadays. Wonderful video, thanks for posting!
luckstars200....I agree totally with you. I've been watching skating for about 30 years now. I think the biggest detriment to the sport was when they eliminated compulsory figures. They taught skaters edge control. Look at todays skaters. YES. they do ridiculously difficult jumps, but they're landings are horrible and not a smooth edge, like Dorothy's. They cannot do a fast scratch spin.Eliminating the compulsory figures was pushed by the Europeans-because of limited ice there.
Yes, the Europeans pushed for the elimination of school figures. At one time they were 60% of the score, with the LP counting 40%. In the end, they counted 20%, SP-30% and the LP-50%. The skaters of today could learn A LOT from these great skaters in regards to edge control. Just look at Dorothy's landings on her double jumps. Smooth as silk. Not to mention skaters today cannot spin. Their leg positions are awful in laybacks. Mirai Nagasu had the best spins in Vancouver. We won't talk judging!~
Beautiful skating, but I don't feel this music suits Dorothy's style. She did not have enough feeling/soul in her to skate to this song. Loved that huge axel to open the performance though. She is truely the most beautiful skater on the ice.
twilliger: What is wrong with smiling? That smile is resonating to the audience, throughout the rink, clearly showing that she loves the sport and performing. I feel sorry for you, for anyone who thinks that a smile "kind of ruins" anything.

Impeccable Gus Luisi training; gorgeous axel, perfect scratch spin. Good techique never fades. Dorothy truely got better with time. Flawless.

@BamaRider She looks good now. She’s stayed in-shape and still has those sharp, delicate features that made her a fox 30 years ago.

Total class. I'm not sure skating has improved; more jumping less artistic talent. She's still the greatest.

This woman's layback spin is a master class all by itself.

Every bit of this was a master class. I'm partial to the scratch spin, though. :)

The pewter-blue satin is downright sexy- as is the lady doing the skating. Great legs!! And the Annie Lennox accompaniment is icy hot.
Dorothy shows us how hot 44 can be- and wraps it all up in a blinding and sexy scratch spin.

She's known for her smile. And I think it fits the song.

Love the song and Dorothy, but she is smiling during this song which kind of ruins the mood of this song, unfortunately. Beautiful routine, though.
