  • Dear Queentut1977,

I don't have the barcode for Octagon, the only store that sold it near here went under. I've been using Zote soap in the recipes instead without issue. Amazon.com has Octagon as well as Luckymojo. I hope that it helps. You can substitute Zote without issue on this recipe. I like to use a little more of the Zote when I make it.

  • @ann13nygma OK THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I GUESS TONIGHT OR TOMORROW I MAY USE A WHOLE 7 OZ BAR OF ZOTE. IF U THINK THAT'S TOO MUCH AND READ THIS IN TIME PLEASE INFORM ME. LOL U THINK THE ZOTE SOAP IS JUST AS SAFE AND JUST AS EFFECTIVE? I JUST REALLY HOPE THIS WORKS. I AM REALLY EXCITED ABOUT MAKING MY OWN DISH SOAP AND SAVING MONEY IN THESE TIMES. SINCE I SAW UR VIDEO ALMOST 3 WEEKS AGO I HAVE BEEN PRACTICALLY OBSESSED WITH FINDING THE OCTAGON. I HAVE VERY HIGH HOPES HERE AND I HAVE

  • @ann13nygma WASTED ABOUT 3 BARS OF IVORY WITH ANOTHER RECIPE. FOR BODY WASH GRATE IVORY ADD 2 CUPS BOILING WATER AND 1/4 CUP LOTION. FOR DISHSOAP SAME STEPS EXCEPT NO LOTION ADD 1/4 CUP VINEGAR. AND FOR SHAMPOO SAME STEPS BUT JUST ADD 1/4 CUP OF CONDITIONER. ALL THE WATER SETTLED AND I HAVE A SOAP AND WATER MIXTURE. LOL.

  • I just made this and am waiting for it to cure, for use tomorrow. I did add the cup of baking soda and juice of (1) lemon. I am anxious to test it out.

I appreciate the clear instructions, as demonstrated in this video.

Thank you Mrs.Brewer for taking the time to share your receipe and info with others.

  • small correction. Soda wash makes water more alkaline, not acidic. 11.0.

  • I want to thank you for this. I love it! I am now sharing it with friends and anyone who wants to learn this skill. I use my stick blender at the end to make it well blended and it pours so much more easily. Love the scent.

  • maybe next time save some water to wash down the pot and the funnel? to get all into gallon>

  • ok 1 bar of how many oz? per gallon? thanks

  • oh my ! where oh where do i find octagon bar of soap? in los angeles? is this good for greasy dishes i cook a lot and do lots and lots of dishes and pots and pans!

  • @eLoveCR7 I don't know where you find the soap in L.A. However, I've just made my 3rd batch of this stuff and I think it works better on grease than the commercial stuff. My dishes are squeaky clean!

  • would love to know the consistency.. does it turn out thicker?

  • Hi Annie, Loved your video on dish soap making. I did make a 1/2 batch to start out with tonight. I remember my older relatives using this type of bar soap and having it sit out on their sink tops for their dishes. Kind of brings back back some great memories for me as well. I love the smell also. Okay, wish me luck! Thanks again for the great video. Rick

  • Okay, this is an update after my making and trying this dish soap. Results were that this recipe does leave a film on the dishes and that in order to ( through trial and error ) eliminate this you need to add 1 cup Baking Soda and 1/4 cup Lemon Juice to this recipe. The water, due to the soap, will still be grey but will not have the greasy water appearance. This method works very well as I have tested it on glasses for streak and clarity. All is well now with a little rework.

  • Hey Annie I have a problem here.My dish liquid leaves grease on the dishes any ideas?I followed exactly......hugs

  • @marshwillow "ADD" 1 cup of Baking Soda and 1/4 cup Lemon Juice to your already made recipe and you will definitely notice a big difference in your water. I too was getting that greasy feeling and residue left on my dishes. Now, I am happy to say I love my dish soap. Hope this helps!

  • @apbmaxim Ty for that I figured it out a bit with some homemade Dish washer powder but I shall add these to it immeadiately.

  • Hi Annie this is good I like things like this I make some of my own products and solar cook a lot.

A cheap supply of sodium carbonate is to pick up baking soda at the dollar store and heat it up to 400 deg f in a toaster oven and it will go from sodium bicarbonate to sodium carbonate in about an hour.Ed

  • Going to give this a try. Thanks for the video

  • Raising the ph makes something more alkaline ....and the main use for soda ash light (what ever they call it on the box)...is to turn hard water into soft water in laymens terms ...basically all you're doing there is stretch out a bar of soap which would be more suited to washing your clothes instead of dishes...

  • Rising the PH to make it more alkaline...right?

  • can I add scent (essential oil) to this recipe? Wasn't sure, also, about the grease-cutting properties of this recipe (is that what's meant by the Ph comment?). Please re-state. Thanks for video!

  • Your hair is SO beautifuly done.Wish I could do that nice a work.

  • Does this soap cut grease at all? Right now I am using watered down Dr.Bronner for my dishes. My one complaint is that I still have greasy residue left in my sink and on dishes.

  • I finally tried it. It worked well, but I couldn't get past the lack of bubbles. So I went back and melted the rest of the bar and added it to the jug. Yes, I'm using too much product, but at least now I see a few bubbles, and I can live with the results. Even using the whole bar of soap I save so much money! And it indeed works well as a general cleaner. Plus I love the smell of it. Thank you so much for posting this. BTW I did go out and buy a wooden spoon.

  • @mslissa22

Remember one thing... bubbles in soap are just made from "additives" called foaming agents. The general public believes that if it makes suds, it is cleaning. It really doesn't have a thing to do with it. I have worked for two chemical companies for years.

  • I made it today and l am letting it sit over night.

  • I would pour the hot mixture in first so that I could use the rest of the water to rinse the last of the soap mixture out of the pan -therby getting all the ingredients into the final bottle

  • Thanks for making this video it is really gonna save me money but I have a question I made it and it seems very liquidy is there a way to make it thicker and also can u add something to change the color like food coloring? Thanks!

  • I have a good solution!!

    REQUIREMENTS:

BAKING SODA, SUAVE ROSEMARY&MINT SHAMPOO, ALOE GEL, AND A CONTAINER

MIX BAKING SODA WITH SHAMPOO UNTIL IT IS A PASTE THEN ADD THE ALOE GEL

    40% BAKING SODA

    40% SHAMPOO

    20% ALOE GEL!

THIS WORKS LIKE A CHARM!,(if you care to open your washing machine YOU CAN SEE THE DIRTY WATER FROM YOUR CLOTHES WITHIN SECONDS!!

  • Excellent video. I hate spending so much on dishwashing liquid. Thank you.

  • @indyniable11 Would you change your opinion if you remembered that only one half of the bar of octagon soap is used in the process?

  • IT'A A GREAT VIDEO, THANK YOU ANNIE! AND BY THE WAY, THE TIP OF SUBSTITUTE WASHING SODA FOR PH RAISER THAT CONTAINS SODIUM CARBONITE WAS GREAT FOR ME,SINCE I CAN'T BUY THIS PRODUCT HERE IN PUERTO RICO . THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND TO SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH US!!!

  • Thanks for the video, tried it and loved it! I too am amazed by the rude people here. Clearly they don't pay attention to the recipe ingredients and the video. Also if you run the dishwasher when full you use LESS water than washing by hand!! Plus the heat sanitizes the dishes. THANKS AGAIN!

  • @indyniable11 idiot

  • Hey ding dong, you still have to have soap to wish your dishes by hand. DUH

  • Thanks for your video and your time! I love it!! Its amazing how RUDE people can be on here!!!

  • I don't think it would hurt anything autumnjrain as long as there is enough water to properly allow the bar of soap to melt.

  • While simmering the mixture, could U add half the remaining water to Ur container, reserving the other half to rince Ur pan of lather after putting mixture into container? & also rinsing funnel?

  • Hi Mslissa22! I wouldn't use an aluminum spoon but I think stainless steel or those nylon spoons would be fine. I just always use a wooden spoon out of habit!

  • @ann13nygma

Don't pour all the water into the gallon jug...leave some to flush the reminding soap down into the gallon jug with the remainding water...left over water.

  • Does it HAVE to be a wooden spoon?

  • KoloniaPNI, I've tried using Ivory soap to wash dishes--it doesn't rinse off the dishes and will give you digestive issues. To be specific, I spent a lot of time in the restroom after the experiment, so please don't try it! Octagon says on the package that you can use it for dishwashing, and I've used it personally for some months. I've heard that Kirk's Coco Castille soap is safe to use, but after the Ivory experiment I've been afraid to try. Hope this helps!

    ~Annie

  • great job. can i use ivory soap if i don't have oct.soap?

  • Then I guess that tablespoon had better learn how to behave for a minute!

  • @ann13nygma I AM HAVING A VERY DIFFICULT TIME FINDING OCTAGON. I HAVE TRIED SOAPSGONEBUY BUT THE PERSON IS NOT ANSWERING THE PHONE AND THE MAIL BOX IS FULL. THAT KINDA SCARES ME. NOT SURE I WANNA PUT MY CREDIT CARD OUT THERE. CAN U TELL ME THE BARCODE FOR OCTAGON? ONLINE I FOUND 35000 145000 AND MANY STORES ARE SAYING THEY CANT ORDER IT. I HAVE BEEN DYING TO TRY YOUR RECIPE BUT AS U SAID I CAN SUBSTITUTE OCTAGON. PLEASE HELP?!
