I knew a lot of "powerful" black men in my real life... but, not many in movies/TV.

Mr. Strode stood beside and ahead of John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.

For the time that this movie came out, it's very profound, if you know anything about the military, Rutledge was a First Sargeant who runs a company in absence of the officers. In this case, one that is charged with rape of a white woman that happens to be the post commanders daughter.

Woody Strode was a great and underappreciated actor and this scene shows just how good he really was.

While it is true there weren't many lead roles for black actors,

at this time, Sidney Poitier was carving out a career as a major star.

Woody was percieved mostly as a supporting actor, regardless of his race,

and that's another reason he didn't get hardly any lead roles,

although he seemed to always get acting jobs.

If you watch any Woody film, though, he is a standout,

I don't think he ever gave a bad performance.
