@MoogleBoss Ohh I'm not doubting it's not possible, you can simply grab some legendaries to make things doable. I'm just saying that would take a lot of patience for choke points.
Because Quilava is the most easily walled Pokemon that the Rival uses. If you pick Cyndaquil, his Croconaw will OHKO all of your Pokemon in Azalea. I guess picking Totodile is also possible, but later Meganium isn't so easy to take out either.
@MoogleBoss I watched your second fight and immediately realised it. But thanks for the explanation, anyway. His other teammates are also influenced by your choice of a starter, i think. Am i right?
I can't wait to see Top four battles.. can't imagine how to beat them with 6 underleveld pokemon (yeah, items and TM's might help a bit, but not that much)
I don't know why people think poorly of Chikorita. Bellsprout and Oddish are poor alternatives due to the lack of Leaf Stones until postgame, and early Razor Leaf is too nice.
@MoogleBoss i picked it mostly because i thought it was cute (lol)
i think it's a pretty good starter though. if i start a new game on my copy of SoulSilver i might pick something different just for a change of pace, since Cyndaquil seems more popular.
All starters are good in GSC. They have more than enough time to grow in the course of the game, and get plenty of application. Chikorita may have a problem with the first two gyms, but that's what Rock Throwing Geodude is there for.
In RBY though, the only starter I like is Bulbasaur. Charmander gets no good STAB moves until his third form learns Fly, and I never liked using Squirtle though he might be as good as Bulbasaur what with the early Bubblebeam and all.
i usually start with Squirtle myself, and i've played through the whole game with nothing but that starter (made the Elite Four a little difficult but whatever). i recall Bulbasaur is a pretty good starter too, and i never started with Charmander for obvious reasons.
Because of Brock? Nidoran breezes through the gym once it learns Double Kick, Butterfree with Confusion does pretty well too. In Yellow, Low Kicking Mankey is probably the strategy that requires the least grinding. It's still a great idea to start raising a Nidoran early though, so that you stone-evolve a Nidoking with the first Moon Stone and kill everything in sight in 1-2 hits until the last gyms where others should be catching up.
@MoogleBoss oh, that's actually really cool to know, since i remember all my friends growing up would tell me how useless Charmader was (because of how bad it is against the first two gym trainers) and i always went with that. and i had Yellow and i recall the manuel said something about getting Mankey... or i got that info from somewhere. i have an untouched copy of FireRed so maybe i'll try playing through the game with a Charmander for once.
One challenge I am going to undertake is only using a party of pokemon I find in that area. If it can't be found in the surrounding areas I can't use it. I have it all planned out for pokemon yellow.
You mean, say, you go to Mt. Moon and you're no longer able to use your starter, but only the wild Geodudes, Zubats, Parases and whatever else you catch there? Sounds pretty challenging.
once again, you've decided to attempt the impossible. i can imagine what the elite four will be like:
using all 3 legendary dogs, the red gyarados, lugia/ ho-oh (whichever version youre playing) and whatever you can catch with a super rod/ find above lvl 40 in victory road
oh and finish your ff: fhol playthrough already. im dying to see you beat the final boss
I still don't know if it'll be possible. And I did pick Silver because I find Lugia more useful. I still need to make it that far before I can catch it (and if I do, I'll postpone it until I receive my Master Ball).
FF: T4HoL hasn't been abandoned, just the current stage in the game requires excessive grinding and that takes time (and isn't fun).
I think you made a mistake in the description about beating bayleef, maybe I'm wrong though. Anyway, great video. I have to wonder how in the hell Lance will be possible, let alone Red...
What's wrong with it? Its Tackle hits hard at lv. 16 evolved and Razor Leaf (with high critical rate) destroys my main tanks who are either rock/ground or water/ground.
@MoogleBoss "no possible way to beat Croconaw because he tears through everything with accurate and powerful attacks, and beating Bayleef is also next to impossible". I was just confused. How could you go against bayleef if you chose chikorita?
I was outlining the differences between choosing the different starters, though my head is in a mess right now and that might have not been clear. Croconaw kills everything in one hit and doesn't provide a single chance for supports or cunning tactics. Bayleef also takes care of the better wild Pokemon at that point. Quilava is at least beatable.
I'm refreshing the line-up as I progress with better wild Pokemon and ones that have an edge over the trainers' Pokemon in a given area. Superior tactics also become available as we progress.
After this gym battle, a combo of Togepi, Onix and Geodude handles most trainers. Togepi lowers attack with Charm, Onix lowers defence, Geodude sweeps while receiving 1 damage.
X-Items are available pretty easy but I'll need to wait until money is a bit more accessible. Having infinite Thunders, Blizzards and Fire Blasts through the casino is nice too.
thats a great idea for a challenge. although thikning about it, a second hoothoot would have been better than rattata for more growl spamming. Actually, even a third one might be better instead of chikorita, since they arent weak to gust.
On my first run, I used Cyndaquil as a starter and didn't use Growl at all in this battle, still managing to win. A growl or two just makes it safer for frail types like Jigglypuff to enter the field without dying.
Damn I would take the handicap of not gaining exp through wild pokemon but no exp vs trainers? This is crazier than the Nuzlocke challenge!

Well, it's possible as I've proved by completing it. Both the Johto portion of the game and Red.

Legendaries make it too easy. My run didn't make use of any (which made the E4 noticeably harder than it should be).

Why did you take chikorita if your first challenge will be a flying-type-user?
Does this have to do with the moves of chikorita? Durability?
