I believe this song was on one of his albums from the early '70s. I too first heard this in 1971 when I met my first wife Jennifer out in Barstow, Calif. Such a beautiful song. bilbo2shire
Isnt it funny. I grew up listening to these songs as a kid thinking they were 'old fashioned'. Amazing how 35 years later i listen to these songs and think how true they really are about what love is.
Try listiening to Joni Mitchel's "both sides now. First back then and now, It will bring tears to your eyes. Time does indeed deepen our souls to appreciate the intense talent and love of rare artist like don.
I so agree. I just shared both the then and now version of Joni's song "both sides now" with someone that I wanted to help understand the difference between singing well and singing from your heart after life has had it's way with you many years later. I'm still deeply moved everytime I listen to her later version.
The melody is one of the best written, His voice is sexy, and smooth, floating in his melody, with the high and the low tones. The words pertain to all that is material, and really not so important, a simpler life to appreciate, a timeless peice of music. A man with insite, that sings to us, aren't we lucky.
its true. this is a great great song.don mclean just seems to know how to pull off incredible songwriting every so often doesnt he? what about VINCENT? thats stunning too
Agree with you totally mick (except it should be 2 years), but you got to admit that trotter has a point, it is good to sit back and listen to the old classics and remember the good bits long gone. Although trotter, i gotta tell ya, the only reason it seemed better back then was because we were the ones causing the mayhem. Now we's growed up bubba, we's on the reciving end the same as our parents where - Welcome to the Wheel
"and castles walls lead me to despair"...seems when this gem first came out we were all trying to escape from those castle walls. Now it seems we handed the mantle on to the new youth and they seem to be building the walls higher and higher.
Its great to be able to sit back, listen to classics like this and simply remember a time when things were better.
Nothing against American Pie,but I think this is every bit as good yet it seems to get no airtime.I've heard A/P about three hundred million times and this one about twelve. What the hell's up with that? When did this come out?
I think it was re-released in 1981, but originally recorded and released in 1970. My Dad had this in his record collection the first year I remember (1976). The picking on this reminds me of John Denver and Jim Croce. Very complex and gorgeous. Cheers
I read somewhere this came out on the "American Pie" album but I never heard it on the radio until I was stationed at Fort Irwin in the desert from 1980 - 82. I met my first wife Jennifer and this song was so dear to us. I got sent to Korea and she left me with 20 days left in Country. Our time was short but this song and Pat Benatar's "In the Heat Of The Night" always bring back plesant memories. bilbo2shire
Its great to here some simple, good lyrics, mellow melodies, and just damn easy to listen to. Nothing political, no special interests, nobodies agenda,no bullshit to deal with or even to try and figure out the meaning of the song. Very good underated song along with the composer, Mr. Mclean. Thanks for posting.
A "castle in the air" is anything that holds promise of glamour and excitement but turns out to be a prison from which it's very difficult to escape. Yours may be Brighton, someone else's may be New York City. We've all got the yearning to get away.
anyway the pavillion is an excellent visual to use for this song because it is a dream building a complete improbability built on a whim by a king with too much money
as for cocktails and parties the prince regent had some pretty wild decadent parties here in brighton
I have never been in San Francisco but I have been told that its a very nice place and what can I say about Madrid and Brighton? Deeply in love with both !!!!!!!!
Thank you again for your videos.... I watch them almost everyday!!!
