This is actually really good advice! She's not filling are heads up with dreams and fantasys your being real! Thanks beacuse i really want to become a fashion buyer!
you said to take a fashion course in the holidays if you are still in high school - I would really like to do this, how old do you have to be and how long do they go for? thanks, Amy.
My point was, if it was so horrible, why watch it and make a rude comment. Didn't your mama tell you if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything? I just really have a problem with people who are rude.
britnaybabay where do u come off calling Lorraine? if u have nothing nice to say shut the hell up :) Lorraine gives alot of helpful advice to alot of people who appreciate it if u dont like her then thats fine just dont watch her videos they do say jealousy is an ugly thing ... guess thats u in a nutshell
I am a buyer.....I started working as an admin assistant to a buyer for a large corporation (with no previous buying or retail experience) I learned the ins and outs of the business and within 2 years became a buyer myself. MY best advice would be to get any job in the company you are interested in and work your way up.
Trade shows are so fun! Except when I buy more for myself than my store :S oops! I'm just about to open a small fashion store but I have previously been in gifts but it is all so fun. I do agree with you, it is hard to get into at the moment. Especially considering the economy at the moment. I'm coming to Florida soon, so if you give me the deets of your store I would love to pop in! I'm from Australia by the way. Alright, x
Yes! I love selling and buying ,The trade shows are realy great too. Seeing the new trends and colors coming out for the new year. I work for somone that asks for my input and more offten than not 90% of the time what I pick sells ans is the hotest thing going.
I will say that I live in San Diego Ca. and barely anyone shops at Saks or Neimans...most people shop at the Macy's/Dillards level with the remainder shopping at Nordstrom/Bloomingdales.....and then the smallest percentage shop at Saks/Neiman.
Nordstrom Rack, Off5th, NM Last Call, and Loehmanns are IMO the best places to shop becuase you get quality stylish clothes at 50% to 85% off the regular prices. :o)
I love that u posted this interview...I think it might help a lot of people that think they want to be fashion designers...Its usually the only option that their aware of...Your showing another side of the fashion industry that many people don't know about....KUDOS
I Love this video! I'm interested in fashion. This job sounds like so much fun. I'm getting a degree in marketing and maybe I could find a job like this. I'm sure you put in hard work, but I think it's worth it.
I think the best way to become a buyer is to start as a sales associate or even a manager then get an internship. Im going to school for Fashion Design, Fashioin Merchandising, and Interior Design and we always go to MAGIC in Vegas and meet with Designers in New York and thats what we were told to do... Who ever says you are wrong with what you are saying is stupid because everything you have said is everything we are learning in school!!!!
Thats actually not true. saks macys and all the high end retail stores have training programs and you have to start at the bottom and work your way up but they will hire you.
yes, but experience is equally important! someone can have a degree, but not know anything when they get thrown into the REAL DEAL because they have no experience!
So would love your job! amazing! Im totally the same as you when i go in to a store i know exactly what i want and hate when people try and sell me stuff! argh so annoying! I know its there job though! Laura.x ;)
yeah i totally agree with u on buyers should take a class and get a retail job. at first i thought i wanted to go into interior design until i took the class, then i knew i didnt want it , but its very useful info and intersting, taken as a fun class i guess.
wow lorraine u are so knowledgable and smart, u know so much about your job! this was very cool and interesting to hear. i know that when i walk into a store i just want to look around and not be bothered but again i want to know that their will be someone around that i can see to help me if i may need help. now if i know what i want i will ask, so thats a diff scenario.
Oh wow this video is so helpful, it sounds like you have a fantastic job but you put a lot of work into it.
I have always wanted to be a fashion designer too but found out that later when I did a course, i was not into it as much. i cannot make clothes, only draw!! Hahahaha
Does your store only sell clothes or do you sell the paintings as well, because I remember you said in another one of your videos you also sell the paints. What else do you sell instore?
Can you please talk more about this topic? I havea ?, if i have degree in economics, and I am very interested in the fashion industry which school is a good one? and what other jobs are there that i could do?
Wow Lorraine, what a great video. You sound like you're really good at what you do, and you show a lot on insight and sensitivity. Nicely done! I already liked you from your haul videos etc., but this really puts you in a new light. High five girl!
I definitely would not be a sucessful business shop owner b/c I would buy what I love and want to keep it all ;) ~ I used to manage GAP store and I got to see all aspects of the business b/c I've been the consumer and the seller and it can be stressful~us managers got the brunt of everything!
I love this video. I have worked in retail for about 14 years and sister you said it. I 100% agreed with everything you said. I have worked in stores where sometimes the buys just buy a lot of trend and it does not move. You are one smart chic. I know you work for your familys buisness, but when you are ready to open your own shop man i think you would make a killing...=0) oh yeah and you gave great advice..=0)
you inspire me so much im 13 and i want to be just like you because you inspire me alot. except not rich part your the rich part and i hope im not poor lol
I am a fashion designer and have been in industry about 15 years. I tried retail to make some extra money many years ago and I only lasted a week!!!!! Lol.
she literally buys clothing to sell in her store. Like all the stuff that you buy in bloomingdales or something, people have to actually pick out that stuff first. Thats what she does.
It's amazing how many people I meet that aspire to work in this field. I work as a buyer as well and it really is fun work. I would add that when looking into fashion buying don't forget that there are many other industries where buyers are in demand. Starting as a purchasing clerk or assistant buyer at a company unrelated to fashion is not uncommon in ones persuit to fashion buying. Certainly having a strong background in fashion and a well rounded resume will take you everywhere.
I have a degree in Fashion Merchandising. My advise to anyone would be to start from the bottom and work yourself up. If you want to work at a place like Saks then take any job they offer you;o)
I loved working retail after I got out of college and I had my own online biz for 4 1/2 yrs.
I'm married now and retired my business 6 months ago. Maybe someday I'll get back into it and open up a boutique.
soooo helpful thank you so much Lorraine!

I love the boyfriend jeans.
:/
I'm not super skinny either, but they really work for me, especially because of my small stature.
Skinny jeans or bootlegs actually make me look so much heavier than boyfriend jeans.
There's my 2 cents.
