All ps3 systems should play ps2 games soon. The 60gb model emulated the emotion engine in the ps2 with a chip, and the 80gb emulates it with an actual emulator, like for the ps1 games it plays. Sony doesn't want to release this compatibility to all systems yet because the ps2 actually sold very well this holiday season, and is still selling very well. Sometime this year Sony will release the compatibility in a firmware update, and also release ps2 games on the Playstation Store.
