  • 1:40, the dear queen is not amused

  • The press conference at the end is epic.

  • If there was ever a parallel universe where The Beatles wrote With A Girl Like You and The Rutles wrote If I Fell, what song do you all think would have been more popular?

  • Speaking as a musician for 30 years I can only say that Neil Inness is incredible! Great musician!

  • It sounds to me like Paul McCartney himself ripped parts of this for his hit "hope of deliverance"

  • the singer looks so much like allan cumming...

  • barry wom lol

  • Neil Innes and Eric Idle were both members of The Rutles - so it's hardly amazing that Eric Idle looks like Eric Idle.

  • Just watch the Beatles Anthology, it has the humor and insight that The Rutles lack

  • Does anyone know where to find the songs on mp3 or CD quality on youtube?

  • The drummer looks like Lou Costello

  • Seriously, did the Queen really like the Beatles?

  • I Did barrys mum

  • It must of been a pai in the ass playing while the ''Queen'' is watching you !!

  • Eric Idle looks ridiculously innocent. It's adorable xD

  • Amazing how their hair was way longer by wednesday.

  • neil innes?? he sure looks and sounds like eric idle...wow

  • how come that one guy looks & sounds like eric idle(of monty python)..strange

  • @WVMMRH because it is eric idle

  • Comment removed

  • barrys mom

  • As a kid seeing this on TV, I seriously thought Eric Idle was a rock star before Monty Python. The docu was so brilliantly made.

Funny and cool at the same time.

  • Shoot me down in flames if I should tell a lie

Cross my heart I promise that it's true

I've been in love so many times before

But never with a girl like you

  • @portsml. Hair peace. I think it's an urban myth. However, you might be interested to know that I saw both Ron and Stig down the chippy recently.

  • if only Oasis could write songs as good as The Rutles

  • this song is really good ! plus, eric looks gorgeous !

  • Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha....LOL boy, they sure bend it up with the original song LOL

  • Don't some of these guys make appearances on the Monty Python stuff?

  • @RedTintedGlasses both idle and innes were a part of monty python, though innes is mostly off camera....he wrote most of the songs you hear on the tv show and in the movies

  • The Rutles were so versatile. Loved the solo albums ~ especially Barry Wom's "When You Find The Girl Of Your Dreams In The Arms Of Some Scotsmen From Hull" and The Punk Floyd (with Dirk McQuickly) ~ "White Dopes On Punk"

  • i was original drummer until got caught with barrys mum

  • What do you think Nasty's Doctor prescribes?

If my guess is correct, I'd like to see his Doctor.

  • It's actually one of the more straight tunes in the film--you could almost pass it off as Beatles number!

  • I was only 4 weeks old when this was broadcast, but I was allowed to stay up late to watch it. It's something I will never forget.....

  • lol it's If I Fell with a few notes changed around.

  • "What are you going to do now?"

    "Back to your place."

  • Could have been a Beatles hit!

  • @goldenoakretriever

It was. But it was called "If I Fell."

  • Lmao! This guy did George perfectly, his eyes were all wide and shit XD Forgive me if he was supposed to be Paul.

  • Absolutely perfect, on the money, love it - 10 out of 10!

All You Need Is Cash is outstanding, legendary!

  • Just love the way this song reeks of insincerity: "Shoot me down in flames if I should tell a lie, cross my heart I promise that it's true; I've been in love so many times before ... but never with a girl like you!" Classic!

  • The Rutles are the band Wings could have been-RIP Leggy Mountbatten

  • Anyone got a video of them performing "I Wanna Hold Your Attention"?

  • IF I FELL! thats what it sounds like thats been annoyin me for ages

  • Eric Idle is miming, his voice was dubbed by Ollie Halsall.

  • So IS this Eric singing or is he just miming to Neils voice? because it doesn't sound like eric really...

  • @MsMoonTheLoon Yes, that's Eric singing - he has a very versatile voice, and has even performed opera in the past.

  • @TheMightyHC

    ah okay thanks :)

yes i know the opera thing, it's just because his geordie is completely gone when he sings Dirk :)

  • @TheMightyHC Nope, as MJPoet said, it's not Eric. In fact, Eric's never sung any Rutles material. (At least not anything officially released)

  • Genius!

  • that fucking band is better than the Beatles! lol despite the fact that they;re a Beatles parody.

  • They are just too funny... George didn't like them at first but later said he did. Hell - it's the highest form of flattery.

    Craig

  • Anyone have bass tabs for this song? Guitar chords are ok if possible. Thank you....

  • Was the Queen really a fan of the Beatles back in the day? That's awesome!

  • love the banter at the end, vauge answers :P

  • Without Leggy Mountbatten the RUTLES would have never amounted to anything. Truely Leggy Mountbatten was the fifth RUTLE....

  • haha love beatles, but man this is too funny to hate!! and reading the comments is funny too! lol

  • lol at erics spot on macca impersonation

  • Of course this song is based on the Beatles song "If I Fell"...but this song sounds just as good! Im suprised that many of the Rutles songs did not make the charts for real! Many of the Rutles songs were very good!

  • @calimar28

    aye

  • @calimar28 You do realize this movie is in the early 70s, don't you?

  • @calimar28 Come ON! o.k. they were good ,but it was so obvious a spoof. In The Rutles film context it was alright, but on it's own a bit cheesy.

  • @calimar28 I AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY!!!!! Some songs I actually liked the melodies better than the Beatles song it copied. It's a shame they didn't often write sincere lyrics that matched the new tunes. They may have copied certain sounds but the overall tune was different. A lot of serious artists do the same. "Surfing USA" is "Sweet Little 16" sped up.

  • @calimar28 my thoughts exactly! the only thing that sets this apart from a real Beatles track is the advances in recording technology

As a producer I've come across a lot of people capable of a convincing Lennon/McCartney songwriting effort, but little of such material sees the light of day - who you are rather than what you do makes the difference in music :(

  • lolol the queen yawns.

  • @scrumsie Better than the Beatles!

  • Barry´s mom, not the queen hahaha.

  • Which queen is that? Latifah or Margaret?

  • Nobody seen anything quite like this since the war!

    Haha ist das geil! XD

  • Comment removed

  • Eric Idle is awesome

  • Why do so many claim Eric Idle is Dirk McQuickly. Dirk is Dirk, and there is no other. Rutles 4-Ever !!

  • They were much better than the 'Strolling Bones' & the 'What' !

  • @gazzymodo lol

  • @gazzymodo

    the what? ahaha :D

  • @gazzymodo

Are you mad! Old hat compared to THE JONES! “Alarmed in the streets of taunton. Alarmed in the streets of westham. I think to my self.

  • dedicated to a very special woman in the audience... barry's mom =)

  • I just love this. Forget the Beatles here we have true talent. I can't want for their world tour.

  • Wasn't this song from their huge box office smash " A Hard day's Rut?? My big bother was a huge Rutles fan but i was too young to go to shows in the 60's

  • This is a parody of If I Fell!

  • "Parody"??

  • noooh? sure??

  • Yeeees! Yeeees!!

  • this reminds me quite much of " If I Fell with the beatles

  • Ya Think?

  • its based on the song :)

  • I heard a rumour that Barry once wanted to be three hairdressers. Can anyone confirm this?

  • What made the Rutles special, was not their voices, their high level of musicianship, or their melodies, it was quite simply, their trousers. This will for once and all, and for even time after that settle the dispute about the origin of Rutlemania.

  • LEGGY!!!!!!

  • ....and it's a good song too! Well done lads!

  • its eric idle playing paul but someone else is singing and playing the song

  • Ollie Halsall does the singing part of Idle

  • it is eric idle singing

  • hahah Eric Idle got paul down pretty well

  • no!!!

  • Is that possibly Eric Idle singing by any chance?? Sure looks like him...

  • Well it is him but it's not his voice.

  • No, it's Neil Innes, another Monty Python member. However Eric does play a mean piano...

  • Neil Innes was not a member of Monty Python. He was more like a supporting player.... as one of Sir Robin's minstrels in "Holy Grail" or as a cowardly gladiator in "Life Of Brian".

  • Absolutely right Saipanrick. Neil Innes came from the Bonzo Dog Band

  • Neil also wrote the music for many of their songs (including for Holy Grail), performed with them on their albums and tours, and wrote and had cameos in a couple of sketches in the "Cleeseless" fourth season. In Michael Palin's diary it is revealed that the only reason Neil was not made a Python is their director pitched a fit. But he is "The Seventh Python" nonetheless!

  • Well, that combined with Do Not Adjust Your Set and Rutland Weekend Televsion. He's more than qualified.

  • The Rutles CHANGED THE WORLD , people !!! Notice how everything was black-and-white, like in "A Hard Day's Rut" Then, when "Ouch" was released, everything became in color !!

  • I remember back in the seventies when they first came out. Rutlemania hit my town HARD! We never recovered. I remember the screaming when we found out we had to pay for their albums. It was a good time. Thanks Nasty, Dirk, Stig and Barry. Rutles forever!!

  • Notice how much longer the boys' hair is from 2:35 onward, like they skipped ahead from 1964 to '66 in one day.

I don't know whether that was poor editing on somebody's part or a deliberate, sly joke, but for some reason I find it hilarious as all get-out.

  • I never noticed that "mdumas43073" good point.

  • Never noticed that either.

  • i was just watching a live version of "if i fell" and i had to hear this one after

  • haha the queen was yawning..LOL

  • hahaha this shit cracks me up! eric idle gets mccartney's facial expressions spot on at certain points. hilarious!

  • "shoot me down in flames if i should tel a lie"...lol i think they were making fun of songs that exaggerate expressing love ..i mean the world would be nuked by now if every guy was shot in flames for telling A lie

  • I just love the PreFab Four - my favourite is Stig tho I respect Dirk.

  • Rutles comment in 1966 that they were "bigger than Rod" caused quite a stir. But Rod Stewart wouldn't become popular for another five years.

  • Derrr! The Rutles movie was one of the funniest piss-takes ever.

  • NO! The Beatles Copied THE RUTLES!! WE"RE THE F*** HAVE YOU"VE BIN?

  • wat? no, they made a movie to make fun of the beatles, and to make a "fake funny documantary" about them. they were pretty funny back in the day

  • It's true. THis is what I have been telling people all along.

  • You are either very stupid or trying to troll someone.

  • The Rutles filled a musical void that the Beatles thought was too wide, deep and decayed to fill. It must have been a special day for the band to perform for Her Majesty. This was clearly early Rutles film clips - before they got into heavy tea drinking.

  • I think Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip really did love the Rutles that night. They were still very sqeaky clean and the Queen loved that Rutle beat. I think it came out later that the Rutles were one of her favorite bands, and she loved Dirk and his doe eyes. What's not to love about these four mop tops from Rutland really? Rutland was a working class town, and these kids were exemplary citizens!! I heard she had a poster of the Rutles at B Pallace. Can anyone confirm this?

  • not so much a poster as a dartboard.she likes to throw prince phillip at it.

  • The Pre Fab Four were even bigger than a cheeseburger super sized. But then, it was 1964 and Super sized wouldn't be bigger for another 20 years.

  • "I wish I had a squadron of tanks."

  • "If I Feel" taste .... ha ... ha ...

  • Eric Idle is hilarious as Dirk McQuickly. He spoofs Paul's singing style brilliantly!

  • idle didn't actually do the singing...

  • @citybeat60 and he looks like a cross between mccartney and harrison, to boot. lol

  • @citybeat60 ..its the finger through the toilet paper look

  • @citybeat60 ..its the finger through the toilet paper look

  • Wonderfully accurate reproduction both of the Beatles "banter", and the patronising style of the staff at those press conferences.

  • Indeed, thomasimon. The Rutles was brilliance as was, "This is Spinal Tap". Just try telling that to the youth of today. They'll think you're mad!

They just want t' play in't snow.

  • 'Did you feel better after meeting the queen?'

'No you feel better after visiting the doctor'

    'Not my doctor you don't!'

    absolute brilliance

  • haha i know! These are the best in the movie

  • my god! Eric idle and paul mccartney has the same EYEBROWS lol!!

  • oh my god the queen sleepy..lol

  • I remeber watching this funny mockumentry with my Mom RIP back in 1977 or 78 when it first aired on NBC in New York.I have it on vinyl, vhs, dvd and a cd.All I can say about this movie was hysterical!!!!!!

  • RUTLES ARE AWESOME!!! GET UP AND GO!!

  • niner numb, niner numb, niner numb, niner numb..... :)

the best parody band there ever was....

Rutlemania...... fans were known to pass out and poop themselves at shows, forcing the Rutles to move to outdoor venues with better ventilation. Ahhh, the memories!

There can never be another Rutles...they were so ahead of their time...

our colons just weren't ready for them....

thanx for posting genius parodied by genius...

It is quite a rarity to find brilliant humor anymore!!! :)

  • The world hasn't seen anything quite like Rutlemania ever since!

  • lol..great!

  • The Beatles and Monty Phyton are great performancers in the England, and in the world. I love them both

  • Love it!

  • and this song is parody of which one?

  • a lot of, specially "If I Fell"

  • it's clearly If I Fell, but has some Yesterday elements too, specially the video.

  • Shes safe in the arms of the law lol

  • alot like IF I FELL but not quite...love it...

  • its suppose to be like that they take beatles songs and mash them together

  • Lovely song. Sad it was not the full version.

  • One of the funniest things is, you can have a Rutles CD playing and if a Beatles fan walks into the room it usually takes them a few songs before coming up with a bright comment like, "Hey, this isn't the Beatles!"

  • I guess they aren't a fan, then. Rutles and Beatles history have been one ever since George commented on having a couple too many cups of tea.

    Comedy genius, nothing less. ^_^

  • I mean really. But the parodies are great songs in themselves. Man I love music

  • she looks soooo incredibly bored!!!! ahhhh LOL

  • ...and Her Royal Highness yawns...

    LOL!

  • yeah it's clearly inspired to if i fell...i had never heard about these guys that's funny! xD

  • I remember seeing this about 10 or 11 years ago on Comedy Central. I love it. There isn't anything else like this out there

  • dedicated to a very special lady in the audience... Barry's MOM. totally snubbed the Queen LOL!

  • ReiNonara commented that it sounds like "If I Fell" and I replied....................

  • "I sound more like him than me." lol!

This is really quite a sweet song!

    ~L~

  • I would love to have been in the same room as John or George as they watched this film for the first time

  • I've just searched for Gandi's comments, but couldn't find them anywhere. Could you please tell me what they said...I'm intrigued.

  • Damn!

I bought A Hard Day's Night on vinyl.

When "If I Fell" came up, I found myself singing to this.

    Damn you Dirk McQuickly!

    Damn you to hell!

  • I can't take it!!!! Eric Idle absolutely shreds Paul.

  • Eric didn't shred Paul, Chris. He massacred Paul! Ahahaha!! It seemed nobody copied Paul's mannerisms quite like Eric! Brilliant! More! More!

  • Apparently Paul McCartney finds it very embarrassing to watch this song being sung, as Eric Idle catches all of McCartney's mannerisms perfectly. Classic !

  • I hope to see more from Eric Idle. Is he retired already? Come back Eric! The world is a floating piece of sh*t in space without your brand of humor! I'm pretty sure he can still give the younger comedians a run for their money.

  • My favourite line from the movie is "when you find the girl of your dreams, in the arms of some Scotsmen from Hull". Gets me every time.

  • Could you, gandil408, stop commenting that on every fucking Rutles thing? NO ONE CARES!!!

  • Let gandil. It's been years already. I'm pretty sure that Yoko will never EVER dare sue the Rutles or even the 1st Mrs. John Lennon because she's already got Mr. Lennon's money enough to keep her crazy lifestyle well into her old age. If she'll sue the Rutles, it only goes to show that she's a kill joy. RUTLES ARE THE BEST!

  • the stupidity that ensues in the conference in the end, very indicative of the real Beatles' conferences, akin to "how did you find America? - we took a left turn at Greenland" type of shtick. totally real :))

  • haha..funny how that brown dude doesnt say a word throughout the whole movie.."i felt more like him!"

  • a very special lady in the audience, barry's mom"

    great!!!

  • LOL Brilliant!

  • Essa música é meio If I fell!

  • This sounds like, "Devil In Her Heart" the beginning does, anyway, when Eric sings "Shoot me down"

  • I think it sounds more like "If I fell" :)

  • alright you two, take it outside!!! now!!!!

a little of both perhaps? can't we all just get a loan? not in this economy!
