i programmed something very similar on my TI89 calculator, it ran about 10fps, i had real time gravity, block placement, you moved with the arrows, selected blocks with #keys. block sprites in B&W were stored in predefined matrix vars, each area was generated randomly

While this is probably beyond manh of the commenters redstone IQ this is what many rengineers {redstone engineers} avoid so that they can make a splash with immediate awesome minecraft in minecraft (in color!) And they don't show this basic step into making minecraft to the public so they can look more awesome when they find the final (colorful) product.

I considered a piston-based display, but decided that it would be too laggy and didn't like the errors from non-rendered blocks when there's a lot of movement. I also like the aesthetics of torch-based displays.

I've actually been contemplating how to make a Redstone Simulation out of redstone. It will probably take a minute or two of real-time computation to detect the result of an "AND" gate made in a redstone simulator.

The biggest difficulty with a redstone simulator is actually the interface. You need more than just red and black pixels. Fortunately Sethbling has solved this problem:

I planned it out in late June, and had a prototype of it made in a circuit-simulator in early July. Then I went on vacation, but when I got back, I started work on it and spent most of August putting the machine together, getting the last of its planned functions fully operational on the 23rd of August.

I didn't use any mods while making it except for hacking in items (before creative mode) and a copy/paste in MCEdit for the repeatable elements (screen and memory).
