Ok this is I think a story of mistaken identity/framing. You see another guy with long brown hair in the parked car with Richards girlfriend, and see him again a little later with an older brunette (sheriffs wife?) You can see by the hair it's not Richard...hair is way to big and bushy, like the guy in the car. So maybe the sheriff thought Richard was sleeping with his wife, and killed his girlfriend as revenge? Who was the other long brown haired guy? And why was she paranoid of the sheriff?

My take on it? No one liked him since he came to town. Everyone made up "the rumors and the lies". Finally, he finds someone different; Mary. The townsfolk hate this & perhaps the most corrupt and prejudiced of them all, the Sheriff, decides to take matters into his own hands. Mary cheats on Richard, this perhaps reminds him of when he found out his mother cheated on his dad. The sheriff sees this as the perfect opportunity to kill Mary & pin it on Richard, thus banishing him from town. Forever.

Marx himself is one suspect. He says Mary 'went out walking all alone', then says 'he left her by the river, safe and sound'. Some people would say this doesn't make sense, so he's lying to cover up the murder. Others would take that to mean that he was by the riverside the last time he saw her.

Mary's lover is another suspect. Maybe he was jealous of her friendhip with Marx, so killed her?

Alternatively, it could have been anyone in the town, seeing as Marx, the poor chap already had a bad reputation. It could have been because they wanted rid of Marx, so murdered mary and framed him so either he'd go to jail or run away - either way, the town would then be rid of him, at least temporarily.
