I wish she had worked more on the voice, I think that Drew Barrymore did a better job withe the voice. She and Jessica did an awesome job with the film.
Little Edie had a great sense of humour and the relationship with her mother however bickering was based on love.
The show captured all of this brilliantly- some people are failing to give the real life Edie any sense of irony or playfulness- she was acting up for the cameras and loved the attention.
People determining the accuracy or tone of this musical from this one song really need watch "Another Winter in a Summer Town", and "Around the World." Trying to judge a musical from one song is absurd. Grey Gardens runs the gamut from funny and poignant to sad and tragic. If your heart doesn't break from 'Another Winter in a Summer Town" then you need to give up on musical theater all together. Christine Ebersole gives the performance of a lifetime.
I am not familiar with the whole show, but I found this song and Ebersole's rendition of it to be a fairly accurate depiction of the symptoms of mental illness that Little Edie exhibited. Yeah, paranoia and agoraphobia (and probably OCD associated with hoarding) are pretty funny when you just view them from the outside, but you can see Ebersole's panic build at the end of the song. She only wields control over her wardrobe at this point.
Well when i watched the movie, i found it to be both comical and moving.. Their mother-daughter relationship was very funny to me, and i think a comical approach for this show was a good way to go, it emphasized the quirkiness of their relationship in a successful way.
I am very sorry, but this actress just doesn't get what Edie was about. First of all, the accent is all wrong- the inflections are all wrong, and worst of all this musical is a mockery of the Beales. As Edie herself would say, "I tell you, it's tragic..."
@elaine31347 You know Edie actually was thrilled when she heard about the musical and ASKED them to make it into one-she actually wrote a letter it's on the first page of the paperback libretto of the show...the letter from Edie to the producer.
It wasn't until I saw the documentary that I realized the real Little Edie also spoke just like this - with accent, phrasing and all. Christine Ebersole is AWESOME!
Kudoes to the Broadway show lyricist/s of this song . . . a nifty knockoff of Cole Porter . . . Yale classmate of Big Edie's brother, "Black Jack" Bouvier.
In the musical lexicon, whether or not you know the documentary, this is one of the best second-act entrances written. The show itself is fine ... a perfect example of seeing a film and saying "let's make this into a musical for Broadway." They fleshed out a back-story for the first act, then set the film to music for the second, doing a brilliant job throughout. That footage such as this can go on the Web and be seen by all is one of the good things of our time.
@MommieDawn The show did NOT make a mockery out of them. Quite the opposite. I was very moved by their relationship. I suspect you didn't see the show, did you?
@pudgeuncle In my opinion it did. I was moved by the original documentation of the mother and daughter pair. I suspect that you love to assume what other's do and you are always right. I did see the show, not live but I did see it. It' s my opinion that this was a mockery - for shits and giggles. The real two Edith Beales' felt very strongly the way they did and acted as such. Not for laughs, but just lived their lives. Period.
@MommieDawn Hey there MD... Did you know that Little Edie was actually alive when the musical was being written? She gave them the thumbs up. I think she was pleased to have someone tell her story.
@MommieDawn I totally agree with you...At least what I am seeing in this video it appears to be all wrong and does not capture the essence of the story...This is NOT a funny story....Interesting, but NOT funny....Edie is being laughed at here. Not funny at all.
@elaine31347 The whole point of this 'show' is to show Edie in the light to be laughed at. Not a celebration of their damn lives...go see the actual documentary...or hell even the movie with Drew Barrymore.
@elaine31347 Have you seen the entire musical? If not, then do not judge this show. I've seen this show three times and its depiction of the Beales is wonderfully vivid. I am an avid fan of the documentary and the musical is very accurate. Try watching the song "Around The World". That song truly shows the devastating life of Little Edie.
@elaine31347 you're missing the point. people love the character of Little Edie- yes we laugh at her as we do in the documentary but only because she was so self depreciating, eccentric and joyous! We're laughing with her not at her!
@fellatio24 you have to see the full show to understand. the first act she plays the mother. second act she plays this. you've gotta get out more buddy
@atlast23 While Ebersole is wonderful, she doesn't sound anything like Little Edie. This is from Alessandra Stanley's review of the HBO movie (and she is right): "Even Christine Ebersole, who won a Tony playing both roles in the musical, had trouble holding on to little Edies timbre. (In the YouTube video of Ms. Ebersole singing the showstopper The Revolutionary Costume for Today, she sounds less like a graduate of Miss Porters than like Adelaide in Guys and Dolls. )"
After just seeing the second documentary "The Beales of Grey Gardens' I think you are probably right. Edie had a regal elegance no matter what her surroundings were. Not sure that elegance is quite captured. I stand corrected indeed.
Love Christine Ebersole ever since her SNL days... but I admit I think only an acid trip could have been responsible for making something as dour and bizarre as "Grey Gardens" into a musical. I mean, sure Broadway pretty much ran out of new ideas a long time ago, but Jeez.
No it isn't.... This was based off of a documentary and the characters talk to the documneters who are working the camera. So the audience is pretty much playing the role of the Doucmentors (the Maysle Brothers)
well this part is based off of the documentary, most of this monologue was taken from a monologue to a camera, this gives the characters permission to break the fourth wall in the second act
Though from the UK I live in Spain. I'd heard of course about this show, but thank God for the Net I can actually get to see things I couldn't normally . I think this performance and song are quite magnificant . I remember seeing the documentary in the 70s. This show seems to have dealt with an unusual subject brilliantly.
Everything in the world is done with and because of money. The writers and producers most likely wanted to share this story with people who weren't being reached by the original documentary. The Beales' story is worth telling. So is the story of Anne Frank, which has also been on Broadway. By your logic, the story of Anne Frank and the horrors of the Holocaust is just a cash cow. Who needs to learn from the past? Let history repeat itself, who cares?
This is my favorite song from the musical! I can't believe they closed it! I never got to see it, but I watched parts of it here, and this is my favorite. She is an AHMAZING actress!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love to sing this song!
Christine Ebersole doesn't need to imitate anyone. She's acting as Edie Bouvier Beale, no one else. What does Bahbra have to do with this? Learn a little bit about the performer you're critiquing before you say such hateful blather. Christine is famous in Broadway circles. Barbara's just a cult figure.
OK, well I agree that Christine is great but you don't have to put down Barbra. She was a Broadway legend in Funny Girl. Sure that was a long time ago, but so what.
I wish she had worked more on the voice, I think that Drew Barrymore did a better job withe the voice. She and Jessica did an awesome job with the film.

I think it's sad to make a 'musical' out of these ladies lives. Making a mockery almost about how they lived. They were sick...ugh
