@gakon123 IF you are on an engineering school its probably free, just conact your teachers, other ways you can see all the information you want on the homesite, just google Autodesk Inventor.

For some reason I can not get the text to appear on the work plane.

I had the same problem, but resolved it by deleting a Microsoft hot fix update kb918118 from the add remove programs in control panel, make sure the updates box is ticked restart the computer and hey presto all sorted. let me know if you get sorted.

KB918118 is automatically a Microsoft security fix for SP2 and is downloaded with your updates, even when you locate the file and successfully delete it then on the next update it is restored. So before you discount the fact that you haven't as you say got that update, to be sure, you need to do a search. ie Start menu, Search, Files or folders, then type in the search tab. KB918118 Select C: as the area you need to search. after the search, you should see a reference. Let me know the outcome.
