  • "All good things must end"...sadly for all us Calvertaholics all the magic ended prematurely on the 14th August 1988!!

  • thanks to allthe makers of calvert/hawkwind videos. The music of space!

  • "They lick the plate of space". WoW

  • What a unique and wonderful songwriter

  • What a unique and wonderful songwriter

  • Thank you so much! I was unaware of this song by Calvert and your video captures both the mood and the spirit.

  • thanx 4 uploading, this is giving me the gooseskin. peace& greetings

  • so glad you like it - I've been asked to make another vid, but need inspiration. doing the background to all the specialist roses was fun and I think there was only one that had not been included...using 'paint' was primitive but worked for those few seconds of film lollotankgirl

  • i like spirit of the age ,dont know if calvert wrote that but sounds like him, the lyrics were awesome .

  • glad you like it - had great fun doing it and must sort out another!!! HeidiLandRover keeps calvert's talent alive as much as poss LolloTankGirl

  • Yeah,Spirit of the Age is Calvert's, and yes, it's amazing. As usual with Bob, it started life as a poem. Only a genius could write the words to Spirit of the Age.

  • yeah think i agree the guy was way ahead of his time for way out ideas that were very thought inspiring

  • @slitheen Hawkwind in my opinion were at their best when Clavert was with them. His writing and his voice....amazing. Spirit of the age is one of my faves

  • @steviesuperstar

Yes: Robert Calvert wrote the words to Spirit Of The Age. He really was one of a kind.

  • Beautiful. Just beautiful. Thanks for helping to keep his memory alive.

My favourite lyrics by Bob were the words to High Rise on Hawkwind's PXR5 album. They're an incredibly sad yet insightful social commentary on living in an urban high rise tower block. Very moving lyrics. I also love the whole of Captain Lockheed.

  • I designed and worked on the stop motion 'lord of the hornets' vid for HeidiLandRover, but thought I'd like to do something with 'paint' Very laborious but rewarding and glad you like my vid - must start on another..... Lollotankgirl

  • "As their tiny jaws

    Munch on planet cores

    Their complex eyes

    Examine the skies"

...possibly the best lyric ever? I was always blown away by how tight Calvert's rhymes were.

  • I think my own particular favourite lyric would be Steppenwolf, but you're right: they are fantastic words. Robert was a true master. Sorely missed - we'll be celebrating his, and Barney's, creative genius at the Roundhouse this summer.

  • agreed. so underated

  • I've kind of rediscovered this song. I've just recorded a version of it at home and had good fun doing it.

I love Calvert - This is my favourite album of his, the second half particularly (from about track 6 onwards). I like the rest but it gets a bit deeper later on.

Nice video by the way. Thanks for keeping his memory alive.

  • Great Video! Well Done!

    Rob Calvert is a genius.

  • Glad you liked it - I enjoyed doing the research and animation for it. Have you seen the related video 'lord of the hornets' that I did half the work on?

    Lollitankgirl

  • Oh yes!

I forget what I used to buy and listen too and it's great to tap in name to rediscover that they really were that good!

Even better when some artistic soul has put the time in to visually represent the music well. It is appreciated out here!

Problem now is that I got to scrabble around in the loft to find the singles to see what the B side's were like!

What about doing 'Days of the Underground' (Hawkwind), needs a good video. Nothing better then Calvert sneering away.

  • got the original 7" single will download for all

  • ta spaceagehippy...........

  • Is that the version with the cellos (?celli?) that was on "Hype"? This particular rendition is one of the bonus tracks from "Freq Revisited" - or is there a third version?

  • I had this CD once. Another case of lending it out, never getting it back. I also liked "All The Machines Are Quiet".

  • As their tiny jaws MUNCH on planet cores!!!
