"We" is usually a reference to the team of which a fan likes. So say, I'm a Red Wings fan, I (and fans of other teams) refer to them as "we", and the other team as "them" commonly. It's not limited to hockey either, it's also a common thing to do in baseball, basketball, football, etc. I don't really see anything wrong with it, it's kind of a verbal distinguisher for fans.
