His playing actually became more extreme---faster and more accurate after he recovered from the crash. I guess the very next album (Odyssey) was a bit sloppy in parts, but that's not because he couldn't play it perfectly, he was just letting it be more "rock n roll". Eclipse and later albums were extremely precise.
I agree his playing became more extreme but I think he lost his creativity to some degree. He had the most style in his playing back in the Alcatraz days. Fire and Ice was probably his peak in precision imo.
