The problem is the title, this is not te representation of a meteor, is te representation of a moon or even a planet crashing in the earth, and the animation is great and just real... In fact, this already happen once, Theia was a "twin" planet of mars (more or less the same size as mars) that eventually collide in the early solar system with the earth, generating interesting results, as a faster rotation and a moon... the core of the earth was exposed in the impact in fact.

Something that weighs 1 tonne, crashing into the earth at 55,000 MPH, would create a crator equal to 5 city blocks. Now, imagine something that weighs 100,000,000,000 Tonnes, Going at 55,000 MPH towards earth, the amount of energy released from the impact would flash burn everything on that side of the planet, would even possibly ignite the atmosphere. Actually, taking into consideration the mass of the object, the density of the cement/ground in new york, and the speed of the projectile. It wouldn't do nearly enough damage to take out a quarter of new york. A basketball sized rock would leave an impact crater of about 4-5 meters in diameter, which isn't that large at all considering the size of new york.

Just a heads up, we have basketball sized meteorites striking earth nearly every month. You don't see massive 20 mile long craters everywhere do you? Using basic physics, which I took into account, again the damage done by a rock the size of a basketball is minimal.

This is not a meteor, it is a planetoid! Those kind celestial objects are large(more than 500km) than komets and asteroids which they have usually diameter from 200m to few kilometers. But samall than planets, about half size of our Moon. Asteroids can davastate local area of a planet ,but effects are global. Planetoids are different story as you can see in this video!

I do not think this is a matter of "god" or "gods" that prevent this events to happen. As far as we now the piece of Universe where we live in, these things have happened since the beginning. A meteor the size of a football can destroy a fair chunk of Manhatten, if not entirely. Remember- the speed and force, not to mention heat, will have a devastating impact. That much force and energy focused on the impact site will cuase a huge explosion. and then the debris will destroy a lot of what survived.
