Columbia distributed the film and owned the rights but it was financed through Horizon Pictures (a British company run by American Sam Spiegel). The script was written by Robert Bolt, an Englishman. Nearly all the cast and crew were British. The director, David Lean, was English. The music was by Maurice Jarre, a Frenchman. So which country made it?

How accurate the portrayal of Lawrence is in this film is irrelevant- films from this era were very rarely concerned with historical accuracy.

A complex man in real life, the interpretation of him in this film is equally so, and that's what's the most interesting to watch. Twice in the film, we see Lawrence urging Allenby to hand over the mission to somebody else- despite the fact that, in many ways, the desert was clearly where Lawrence felt most at home.

Lawrence was a self publicist on a massive scale. Most of the real spade work in the Middle East campaign was done by Allenby’s regulars.
