When I was little I recalled this scene, and the one where you first see Tolly go into his bedroom and you see Toby or Alexanders hand on the stair rail. 20 years later and I found the books and was astounded to realise this was that show I remembered watching. My friend Fred remembers the bird finding the key in the floor. Another friend downloaded the series for me 2 years ago. I LOVE watching this often, especially near to Christmas. I'd buy the DVD if they would only also remaster it too!

@powergirl07 there's a sort-of-new movie called "from time to time" that is based on the books but doesn't quite stay true to the story but still good, u can find it on YouTube too. Also there's a website for the green Knowe house, do a google search for "hemingford grey" that's the house's real name.

For some reason this scene absolutely terrified me when I was 6.  Something about statues coming to life I think. Still freaks me out alittle! Also remember a bit where Tosland thinks there is a walking tree outside the house but it turns out to be someone holding a tree - PHEW!

i loved this when i was a kid,was really quite spooky. whenever i asked people if they remembered it or described it to them they looked at me like i was mad! was beginning to think i'd imagined it. lol i always remember it at christmas time.memories of comfy cozy childdhood times in front of the tele,hmmmm lovely. remember the ghost horse anyone? ned or somthing wasn't it,and the ghost children that played on the rocking horse. i could remenis about this all night.

It was the Children of Green Knowe and Tolly was meant to be a boy. I was (and still am) below average height so they cast me because they figured I looked younger than I was. And they were right. Although I did grow two inches during the filming and started developing a bumfluff moustache.

Do you remember where they actually shot this?

Its not The Manor at Hemingford Grey in Cambridgeshire where Lucy Boston actually lived. Where you shot was on a similar layout but on a lot larger scale. The actual 'Green Knowe' is a lot smaller. I've been there and, even as an adult (to the embarrassment of the then boyfriend) got highly excited. I stroked the real green deer! They are also offering copies of Toby's mouse for sale apparently.

In my book it says that her daughter-in-law is happy to show people around, but my edition of the book is nine years old so I'm not sure how accurate it is.

Is there a website? It's just that I'm really desprate to go.

Also, is it true that there are two other books called 'The River of Green Knowe' and 'The Stranger at Green Knowe' because if there are, I really want to read them.

Unfortunately I haven't got any more clips, I taped this sequence (and this sequence only) on VHS when the series was repeated back in the 80's as I was entranced by the Radiophonic Workshops version of 'Tomorrow shall be my dancing day' - and the visuals.

as a child i wrote to l.m. boston, the author of the green knowe books. i wanted to know was it all real? it certainly was for me! she responded with photos of the real green knowe, of the garden, the river, of her lovely son peter, who illustrated the books, and of herself among her beloved roses. could she imagine what it meant to me?

This image has ALWAYS haunted me, and I never knew where it came from, that image of Sint Christopher. Of course the BBC wouldn'ttouch it with a bargepole now, for its quasi-religious overtone, but how powerful is the imagery? How deep does it sink into the old subconscious. Hell, it stayed with me all tis time.....it's a powerful piece of Art.

I've never watched this series before but i'd love it if they showed this on BBC.

All the stuff they have on cbbc is rubbish, it's all too O.T.T and misses out on the mystery.

It was about a boy who got evacuated during WWII to a old manor house haunted by three English Civil War era children. The boy also has a run in with a 'demon tree' and is only saved by the intervention of the St Christopher statue. Its a charming, unpredictable atmospheric tale, of the sort that just isn't made these days.
