When I was little I recalled this scene, and the one where you first see Tolly go into his bedroom and you see Toby or Alexanders hand on the stair rail. 20 years later and I found the books and was astounded to realise this was that show I remembered watching. My friend Fred remembers the bird finding the key in the floor. Another friend downloaded the series for me 2 years ago. I LOVE watching this often, especially near to Christmas. I'd buy the DVD if they would only also remaster it too!
@powergirl07 there's a sort-of-new movie called "from time to time" that is based on the books but doesn't quite stay true to the story but still good, u can find it on YouTube too. Also there's a website for the green Knowe house, do a google search for "hemingford grey" that's the house's real name.
@powergirl07 I know you posted your question a long time ago but in case u wana know- theres 6 green Knowe books: children of, river at, stranger at, chimneys of/treasure at (two titles but same book), enemy at, and stones of..
someone asked about the real house, Green Knowe, which is the Manor at Hemmingford Grey, look for its site in google where you can find out about visiting.
This sequence (and the whole series) enchanted me as a kid - thank you for uploading it. So pleased to know the title of this song at long last also. Awesome!
Green Knowe the demon tree evil branches can't catch me! Or something....This was very creepy indeed. I remember being rather terrified but thrilled at the same time. Thank's for posting it for us all to reminisce over!
I hate being grown up I want to be 12 again. I absolutely adored this, it brings back so many happy memories. Tolly was cute but Toby was the guy for me!
For some reason this scene absolutely terrified me when I was 6. Something about statues coming to life I think. Still freaks me out alittle! Also remember a bit where Tosland thinks there is a walking tree outside the house but it turns out to be someone holding a tree - PHEW!
I ADORED this book and programme when I was younger, this has just brought back many happy memories for me. Thanks. Anyone know where I can get hold of a DVD, been looking for years!
I only just learned in Christmas 2008 that My Dancing Day is a real Chritmas Carol. I had always thought it was just some wonderful music made up for the series.
i loved this when i was a kid,was really quite spooky. whenever i asked people if they remembered it or described it to them they looked at me like i was mad! was beginning to think i'd imagined it. lol i always remember it at christmas time.memories of comfy cozy childdhood times in front of the tele, hmmmm lovely. remember the ghost horse anyone? ned or somthing wasn't it,and the ghost children that played on the rocking horse. i could remenis about this all night.
dont start me so could i! lol.the ghost horse was called feste, it belonged to toby one of the ghost boys. i have just finished the book, its made me wish i was 9 again.lol. i got the dvd off e bay. its not the same when your older.
I've been looking up this show and now I've come to this clip I'm too scared to watch it. Seeing that girl has reminded me how much Saint Christopher scared the crap out of me. I daren't go on. What a wuss!
You had a crush on little twelve year old me. Ah. If only we'd met twenty years ago we could have been rude to each other, ignored each other, perhaps pulled each other's hair, stuck our tongues out and pretended we didn't like each other while secretly writing love hearts with our initials inside them on the back of our exercise books. Aw, youth.
Am I to take it that you did too then? Well I daren't say we shan't fight.
It must have been a wonderful experience to star in the series. I saw it when I was little and watch it with my nan every Christmas. I even have a (pirate) DVD copy. She will be amused to know I've chatted to you.
hey...ok i'm confused...was this the children of green knowe or one of the other ones in the series?? its just i thought tolly was a boy, or was that meant to have been someone else?
It was the Children of Green Knowe and Tolly was meant to be a boy. I was (and still am) below average height so they cast me because they figured I looked younger than I was. And they were right. Although I did grow two inches during the filming and started developing a bumfluff moustache.
Its not The Manor at Hemingford Grey in Cambridgeshire where Lucy Boston actually lived. Where you shot was on a similar layout but on a lot larger scale. The actual 'Green Knowe' is a lot smaller. I've been there and, even as an adult (to the embarrassment of the then boyfriend) got highly excited. I stroked the real green deer! They are also offering copies of Toby's mouse for sale apparently.
Apologies if this comes out twice, I couldn't see it come up the first time. Anyway, I think it's Crow's Hall, Debenham in Suffolk. But I'd need to watch the programme again to be sure - haven't seen it in 22 years! Unless it ruings a bell with you Alec?
In my book it says that her daughter-in-law is happy to show people around, but my edition of the book is nine years old so I'm not sure how accurate it is.
Is there a website? It's just that I'm really desprate to go.
Also, is it true that there are two other books called 'The River of Green Knowe' and 'The Stranger at Green Knowe' because if there are, I really want to read them.
Anyone tell me what Children of Green Knowe was about! I remember this but not what it was about! I loved these kids dramas! Shame they dont show them any more! Oh to be a kid again!
Thanks so much, loved the books and remember little bits of the tv series. Magical, wish our children had more of this in their lives. Have searched on ebay for dvd but can't find anything there. (Wil's mum).
Unfortunately I haven't got any more clips, I taped this sequence (and this sequence only) on VHS when the series was repeated back in the 80's as I was entranced by the Radiophonic Workshops version of 'Tomorrow shall be my dancing day' - and the visuals.
as a child i wrote to l.m. boston, the author of the green knowe books. i wanted to know was it all real? it certainly was for me! she responded with photos of the real green knowe, of the garden, the river, of her lovely son peter, who illustrated the books, and of herself among her beloved roses. could she imagine what it meant to me?
I'm re-reading the book, this Christmas. I think it's about belonging to a place, - taking on the layers of myth and making them part of yourself, forever. Thank you for this haunting clip.
This image has ALWAYS haunted me, and I never knew where it came from, that image of Sint Christopher. Of course the BBC wouldn'ttouch it with a bargepole now, for its quasi-religious overtone, but how powerful is the imagery? How deep does it sink into the old subconscious. Hell, it stayed with me all tis time.....it's a powerful piece of Art.
It was about a boy who got evacuated during WWII to a old manor house haunted by three English Civil War era children. The boy also has a run in with a 'demon tree' and is only saved by the intervention of the St Christopher statue. Its a charming, unpredictable atmospheric tale, of the sort that just isn't made these days.
