the musicians of the 90's seem so rugged and poetically earnest, looking back. Even the radio friendly stuff had some weight, and more care was put into the musicianship.
More great bands around today though really, more bands in general.
Fantastic version. Both of them are great (Bryan Ferry with Roxy Music and this one). The softness that Mary gave to this music is simply perfect. I've heard some critics about versions of great old musics; one of them was "Can't take my eyes off you" performed in a "new version" (by that time) in the 80's by Boys Town Gang; the same critics to "Always' something there to remind me" by Naked Eyes (still in the 80's). IMHO I think all musics I mentioned in this post are ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC.
I HATE cover songs! In 50+ years I'd never heard one that was worth a shit compared to the original. When the DJ announced 'this is 10,000 Maniacs doing the old 80's hit More Than This" many years ago, it was cringe time ... til I heard it! Love at first listen! Guess if you live long enough, you'll hear something you never expected, like a GREAT cover version! LOL Glad I found it ... runnin' outta time here :)
@coloradowinter53 "...never heard one (cover) that was worth a..."? I could list many and I'd *think* you'd agree; Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's, "All Along the Watchtower", to name only one.
@coloradowinter53 Wow, you pretty much nailed my thoughts on this. I didn't even know who Mary R was until this and it led me to find out all about John and Mary. I knew Lombardo from 'Wishing Chair' but that's it.
hey @coloradowinter53 , how bout Klaus Meine & the Scorpions' "Love of my Life" cover of the legendary Freddy Mercury & Queen? Not so bad eh? Or any cover by Evanescence's Amy Lee, for that matter... You just have to look a little wider... most classic songs covered by other legends are usually pretty good too, don't you think?
@coloradowinter53 I'm agree with you. The artist that makes the cover version must be as good as the artist of the original version. In this case, both versions sounds great.
@coloradowinter53 You really don't like any other cover song? Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower? Ike And Tina's Proud Mary? The Beatles Twist and Shout?

Bryan Ferry knew how to phrase the lyrics. This singer vocalizes w/o any urgency. It's just "la-di-da, look at my dimples." So lame.....

Can't seem to wear this song out. I like it every time I hear it.

I enjoy this version more than Bryan Ferry's one though his sounds great too.

Now if we could just put this original version - without the hideous dance groove - back with the original video!

@coloradowinter53 It helps to actually listen first before judgement. Some of them one likes, others not, like any other song.
