I was the producer for Dream Quest Images on these first Fahrvergnugen spots. Live action, the poeple in the car, CGI, the Farfel character/roads, traditional animation, the cows. These were a bear to get done, the agency guys were not very cooperative.

Really funny. I'm German and nobody in Germany would ever use this word... "Fahrspass" maybe, but "Fahrvergnügen" just sounds weird...

But the Words "Fahrvergnügen" and "Volkswagen" sound totally different from the german pronounciation...

Hi! I can tell u exactly how this happened, my dad invented that word for his tv spots with VW. We used to live in germany so he learnt german from there. If i remember correctly those spots where done while my dad was in germany then they decided to make tv spots for the US. So anyways, in german its easy to create words and he invented that word by adding words together which the meaning is driving with pleasure (sexual pleasure actually ;)) also because he said it sounded like "far out" xx

Of course it is possible to add up words in the german language (like "Zugabteiltürklinkenputzer" which would mean "the guy cleaning the door knobs in this part of the train") but Fahrspass does not mean "pleasure while driving" but "experiencing joy by driving"...

Also the word existed several years before those spots came out...

I bet many US citizens think that Fahrvergnügen is a common everyday German word. I myself never heard it before but I think Volkswagen chose it because it sounds very strange to the common American and it uses an Umlaut.

But you have to remember that those spots are from 1990. "back then" the common usage of words was different, but i also cannot imagine it being an "everyday term" ;)
