Remember it like yesterday... I was 10, watching it with my Dad and my two brothers, in a hotel room in Montauk NY. We went absolutely flat-out berserk mad, as all Americians did, so obvious was the fix.
If the USA was on the other end, I would have felt guilty over such a pussy win.
@stikndip It would never be put in those videos because it really wasn't a premature celebration. America had explicitly won many times in that game but then they stole the win away from them
according to the rule thn, there were many mistakes by the refs, the clock keepers, Jones - who has NO authority to go into the game and change the decision of the refs, the 3 inbounds after the free throws by collins w/the rule of NO stopage, the last 3 second of the game should have been a CHRIS WEBBER RULE that C-webb did at Michigan. Game over, USA won!!! to much mistakes. If the US nominate and vote for Hall of Fame the '72 USA men's b-team, IOC, Russia, FIBA, and all would go nuts.
@spetsnazovets The fact is that FIBA gave Team USA the shaft. R. William-Jones ordered the officials to grant a timeout not permitted by 1972 rules, reset the clock in violation of 1972 rules, and to replay a play-again in violation of rules he swore to uphold; and in direct violation of FIBA's bylaws. Don't tell me TeamUSA had no reason to think they got the shaft. It was completely unfair, and you know it.
uno de tantos momentos hermosos que ocurren en el deporte FUCK YOU USA, stop saying you are AMERICA, AMERICA is the whole continent not just your funcking country
@dusman78 The name of the song is "Есть только миг" - "There is just a moment" this is an old song from the "Sannikov land" soviet movie. watch?v=bQ-hnn1UASQ
CONT'D should have been granted due to the human error of the scorekeeping staff not relaying the timeout request to the referees; this occured all the time in that era, which is why FIBA changed the way timeouts were called, making the scorekeeper entirely responsible for them. The on-court officials had only so many options under the rules, and Jones (acting without authority) ordered them violated. This is unacceptable behavior by Jones, and it directly affected the outcome of the game.
CONT'D confronted by the press, but later admitted his actions, and not long before his death in 1981 acknowledged that he had no authority to act. On-court officials couldn't restore time to the clock, and couldn't grant timeouts during live play, remember. Had Jones not interfered, the second "attempt" would have been the final one, with more than likely the same result as the real second attempt, as only 1 second remained. To those who, supporting the Soviets, say that the timeout CONT'D
CONT'D when play resumed. The on-court officials, still believing only one second remained, were content to end the game there; but Jones was still at the scorer's table, and ordered the attempt be repeated yet again. We know what happened there, it's part of this vid. The US protest centered around Jones' actions, where he had no authority to act. To remind you all, he ordered actions that were forbidden under the rules in 1972. Jones initially denied taking any action at all when CONT'D
CONT'D back on the clock. Yet, here's Jones ordering the on-court officials to do just that. Reluctantly, Righetto and his partner, Artenik Arabadjian of Bulgaria, complied, and the Soviets would attempt to inbound the ball again from the end line. US center Tom McMillen obscured Ivan Ideshko's inbound attempt, he passed short to teammate Sergei Belov, who heaved a desperate pass down the floor, with the horn sounding as the ball left Belov's hand. Problem? The clock hadn't been reset CONT'D
CONT'D William Jones, who ordered the on-court officials to grant the timeout and to reset the clock to 3 seconds. Under FIBA rules, Jones has no authority to make any ruling during a game, as on-court officials have absolute authority. He has no authority to over-rule an official, let alone to order the officials to violate the rules. The rules forbid timeouts from being granted during "live play," meaing once the ball was in Collins' hands, in this case; and they forbid time being put CONT'D
CONT'D against the Soviets; 2) resume play with the 1 second showing on the game clock from the point play stopped; or 3) grant the timeout AT THAT POINT with 1 second remaining, and inbound the ball at the point play stopped. Righetto says he ruled the second option, to inbound the ball at the point play stopped with 1 second remaining (having conferred with the scorekeeper, Hans Tenschert, who agreed). At this point, another individual entered the scene: FIBA Secretary-General Renato CONT'D
CONT'D they had planned or could ad-lib. The ball was inbounded and was dribbled to a point in front of the Soviet bench, where play was stopped by Brazilian referee Renato Righetto, who had noticed a disturbance near the scorer's table. It was the Soviet assistant coach Sergei Bashkin, who was livid and screaming at the scorekeeper about his coach calling a timeout (still questionable to this day). The on-court officials had a few options under the rules: 1) assess a technical foul CONT'D
CONT'D began his shooting motion, the horn from the scorer's table went off. Obviously, the scorekeeper was trying to notify the on-court officials of something. Problem? It was too late, regardless. The rules in 1972 forbade timeouts once the ball was in the shooter's hands, meaning the officials couldn't grant any timeout request. Immediately after Collins' second shot went in, the rules required the ball be inbounded, no timeouts were permitted. The Soviets had to go with whatever play CONT'D
the coach who called the timeout to ensure that a referee knows of this request. Neither referee asked Kondrashin when he wanted to take that timeout he supposedly had requested, either before either foul shots or after the first, as was his option under the rules. Thus, it remains a matter of dispute whether he had called it when he says or not. The only factually undisputed result is that Collins sank his first shot, tying the game, then was handed the ball for his second shot. As he CONT'D
Perhaps we should go over what occured that September evening in Munich, Germany, in 1972. The problem began (as far as the controversy goes) after Doug Collins was savagely undercut by Zurab Sekandelidze. The groggy Collins was awarded 2 foul shots. The Soviets claim that coach Kondrashin called a timeout. The referees, the only officials under 1972 rules who could grant the request, were never notified of the Soviet request, if it even happened as the Soviets claim. It's the duty of the CONT'D
Just to show how deluded this ignorant jackass is (who calls himself rc2869), what Carter handed out to 450 US athletes was a CONGRESSIONAL gold medal, authorized by the US Congress, on July 30, 1980. He says that they were for winning the Olympics, which clearly makes him delusional, as the authorization clearly was a token of thanks to the athletes for their sacrifice. Then he talks of political things that had nothing whatever to do with the game under discussion here...
@smartalek65 I said they were presented Gold Medals for not turning up which you have jazzed up as 'sacrifice'. - which is what you have just written. Oh dear how is the foot feeling now you have metaphorical bullet in it. Presenting and accepting Gold Medals for not turning up deary deary me - ha ha and you call me ignorant. Why not get some Congressional ones done for the 1972 team as the IOC won't be presenting anytime soon.
@rc2869 Wrong again, oh deluded one. YOU said that they were given for "winning" the Olympics. The US government gave them to those athletes, not for the purpose YOU state. Clear enough?
@smartalek65 Are you setting yourself up as a rival organisation to the IOC so you can give medals to who you think won comptetitions? If so I suggest Calvin Smith is given 100m gold retrosepctively for 1988, being the only one of the 1st 5 who wasn't in someway tarnished. I am supporting an American getting justice - hardly anti American is it?
@rc2869 Oh, NOW you support an American getting justice, huh? For the last week or so, you've been bad-mouthing the US (and practically no other nation) with things political or other sports scandals which had naught to do with the topic at hand. And you have the raw, utter nerve to try to imply now that you weren't being anti-American? You're getting a nasty case of foot-in-mouth disease, you'd best get professional help.
@rc2869 You might want to scroll down, where you asked me to have the 1980 'winners' to present ersatz gold medals, did you not? Now it's time for YOU to open mouth and insert foot, son.
@smartalek65 My broader point of links between US government and Bin Laden and the tens of thousands of lives and billions it ultimately cost is a warning to all governments in chosing friends and allies which you interpret as Anti-American - paranoid beyond belief . Hence the reference to beam and eyes own and neighbours. In the broader worldwide context I think that is a relevant point, except to those who think the most important thing is a ball game over 40 years ago that they can't change.
@rc2869 Just never mind the fact that your "broader point" has no relevance at all to the topic of discussion, which IS that ball game played nearly 40 years ago. Fact is, R. William Jones gave orders he had no authority to give which directly affected the outcome of that game. Bottom line, son. You have never given any rule as justification that would have allowed it, therefore you tacitly admit that TeamUSA not the Soviets earned those gold medals.
@smartalek65 I tthink it does and am admitting nothing of the sort. The USSR won following some major confusion around time keeping. They played to the whistle The US (apart from on court tactical naievety whis the real reason they Lost) also made a glaring error in not turning up to the Olympic ceremony - that was disrespectful to the Soviet and Cuban athletes and fellow competitors. Nothing wrong if they felt an injuustice if at the presentation they refused them
@rc2869 I put no words in your mouth, boy. I gave you the only choice you have: show the rules that permitted Jones' action OR admit I'm right. That's the bottom line, son. You can quit being the whining cry-baby anytime by no longer repeating irrelevant anti-American propoganda to excuse the official misconduct that occured.
@smartalek65 The bottom line 51-50 -and playing to the final whistle following some confusion in the final few seconds. The last play which included US players - I do believe. The USSR were presented with Gold Medals as winners. They did nothing wrong.
@rc2869 To say the Soviets did nothing wrong only obscures the issue at hand: that OFFICIAL misconduct is what cost the US the game. OFFICIAL, not Soviet, please note.
@smartalek65 The bottom line 51-50 -and playing to the final whistle following some confusion in the final few seconds. The last play which included US players - I do believe. The game was still alive and the USSR scored and were presented with Gold Medals as winners. They did nothing wrong.
CONT'D admit that I'm right, the Soviets did NOT earn those medals. Face it, no rule existed in 1972 that allowed Jones to interfere in a game in progress, FIBA rules forbade it. There's no justification for the review panel's decision-the horn that sounded ended the game with the US ahead, 50-49.
@smartalek65 Once more you try to put words into my mouth, I am not going to admit you are right. The US should have been concentrating when the clock was re-set whatever the reason. They got their tactics wrong from the start and the final play was school boy error and 51-50 was the Final Score. USSR did earn the medals. Play to the whistle - the final whistle. Continue to amuse me with your cry-baby antics if you want.
@smartalek65 How are those Gold medal re-prints coming along? Get Jimmy Carter to present them is my thought -after all he has far more credibility now than he did 30 years ago.
CONT'D Obviously, I'm not the only one who thinks rules should have been upheld and felt strongly about it. Tenschert told the review panel chairman to his face at a news conference of his lies. Rhigetti refused to sign the official scorebook. Both say that under FIBA rules the US won that game. Either come up with an actual rule that permitted Jones' action or CONT'D
@rc2869 Excuses: those things that YOU state to get around the FACT that Jones had no authority to do what he did in awarding another chance. That is blatant misconduct, little boy, and your own countryman-Renato Rhigetti, an on court official at that game-recognized it, as did Hans Tenschert, the scorer that day. CONT'D
CONT'D Just to demonstrate how little you know, hoops has been an olympic sport since 1932, with full medal status since 1936. No matter the outcome of that game in 1972, it would have continued as an olympic sport. Competition was improving-the Soviets weren't the only team to give the US a tough game, Brazil played just as close, just cleaner than the USSR. Jones' misconduct wasn't needed.
@smartalek65 er sorry you are telling me nothing new. Jones was key person in ensuring it had a continued Olympic status - not as a result of this match, rather due to his hard work in the preceding decades, especially post-WWII.
@rc2869 Your "points" about Reagan, Bush, mujahadeen, etc. are IRRELEVANT. It's YOU who are sanctimonious here. As for the only relevant statement you made: remember, Jones had NO AUTHORITY UNDER FIBA RULES to do what he did. Fair is fair, the final horn HAD sounded with the score 50-49. TeamUSA DID "play to the last whistle," and Jones' MISCONDUCT awarded the Soviets another chance-AGAINST THE RULES. That's what matters here. CONT'D
@smartalek65 More excuses - the US team played on and at the Final Whistle was 51-50. FACT! I feel sorry for you, albeit you amuse me - you seem to have some psychological deficiencies. The US played on after their early crow celebrations. All the Team US had to do was put the really big lankywhite guy at the back of the court instead of the shorter black guy. Schoolboy error. As I said before - get some Gold Medals made for the US team as you feel so strongly - nothing stopping you.
CONT'D Frankly, you're admitting Team USA was treated unfairly; yet you dwell on the irrelevant. Like US athletes caught violating rules-as if nobody else did. Or Carter's awarding medals to athletes which nobody but you deludes themselves into saying it was for winning the olympics. Then there's the dispicable reference to 9-11. USSR did NOT earn hoops gold in 1972.
@smartalek65 Nope I'm admitting nothing other than the USSR won as the final score was 51-50 and were presented with Gold. The Soviet players did nothing wrong. Without Jones there wouldn't be a discussion because hoops wouldn't ever have been an Olympic Sport likely as not. Blah blah. You fail to address any of my points - please first remove the beam from thy eye before the speck of dust from they neighbours. Sanctimonious as per my original post. You type a lot and say nothing.
@smartalek65 And please don't tell me there wasn't a link between Reagan and Bush senior's support for Mujahadean and ultimately Bin Laden fighting the Soviets and roll forward 15 years later and the despicable attacks on 9-11 on Pea-Brain Bush Junior's watch. USSR did earn the hoops - the final play of the match was awesome. Kareem, Bird, Jordan, Johnson would have been proud and done the same in the Soviets place. Play to the whistle as taught in nursery school, leave nothing to chance
CONT'D The final would have been 50-49, BY THE RULES. 1) If Jones obeys the rules, the game ends, and no 3rd attempt even occurs. Or 2) the review panel ignores politics and rules (correctly) that Jones exceeded his authority in interfering with a game in progress, thereby disallowing the 3rd attempt and the resulting score. CONT'D
@rc2869 Then you admit to the OFFICIAL MISCONDUCT that occured? Your repeating irrelevant "points" only seems to indicate a reluctance to discuss that misconduct-first by R. William Jones on the court, then by the lies told by the review panel to uphold the result. Fact is, had either Jones or the panel gone by the rules, the last attempt wouldn't have officially occured. CONT'D
@rc2869 You only say that because you have no facts to answer the truth. Tenschert went so far as to tell the chairman of the panel at the news conference that his "facts" supporting rejection of the US protest were falsehoods. He and Righetti both state unequivocally that the US won under FIBA rules. Obviously, Americans aren't alone in thinking USSR didn't earn those medals.
@smartalek65 The truth is the USSR were given the medals. 51-50 is a win in anyone's book other than yours. There are lots of people who think they did earn them. The Soviet reps on court did nothing wrong other than play to the final whistle - unlike your countrymen. I also sited your countrymen who deliberately and systematically robbed others of glory. Get some replica Gold Medals coined. Give them to the US team if you feel so strongly and seem to have nothing better to do.
@smartalek65@rc2869 In fact get the 1980 'winners' to present them. The ones that Jimmy Carter gave gold medals too. You know the games where you didn't turn up because the Russians invaded Afghanistan. How ironic that those your military supported in defeating the Russains then used support to fly planes into your iconic buildings.
@rc2869 Let's see, as I recall, these individuals were suitably punished for their wrongdoings-like being stripped of medals, yes? Justice was done. Where's the justice for TeamUSA for the OFFICIAL misconduct done them here? None was had. The official scorekeeper and an on-court official both say the US won under FIBA rules.
@smartalek65 Groundhog day for sanctimonious Man. Is e.g. Obikweylo referred to as Olympic Champion - er No. Jones has her medals confiscated, Gatlin? Lewis? I wonder who would have won the golds in 1972 had such drug detecting methods been employed. USSR and GDR would have lost many as would USA. To be fair at least you allowed blacks an equal fotting in represention by this stage. As for the match under IOC rules the USA came second - am I wrong? Pray tell?
@rc2869 Actually, you are wrong. The IOC delegates the competitions to the international bodies that administer the sport in question-including using that bodies' rules. Under FIBA rules, R. W. Jones had no right to be courtside, let alone to order time put back on the clock. Hans Tenschert, the scorekeeper, and Renato Righetti, the Brazilian on-court official, both say that the US won under FIBA rules. Righetti went so far as to refuse to sign the scorebook, making the game unofficial.
@smartalek65 Blah blah blah - That's just a noise :-). You whine better than any of my countrymen. USSR Gold medal winners. Fact! IOC presented the medals I do believe. Write to the IOC and tell them if you feel so strongly. I always thought the team who scored the most points won and that was USSR after the final stunning play. The US can award themselves Gold Medals if they want - I mean they did in 1980 for NOT turning up.
@bobbleheadbob97 Yes Genius - they played to the whistle whatever the stati may be. I am not impressed by US haters either. However I do so, nay implore, that sometimes the better team wins. FACT the USSR picked up the Gold. The US did not pick up the silver - toys and pram spring to mind.
Seriously? If I were a Russian I'd be embarrassed that a team of 30 yr old Commies had to cheat three times to beat a bunch of young kids. You want to see a real upset, watch The Miracle on Ice!
The hell with Russians! They are no good cheating lying bastards. Officials cheated for them in the 1980 summer games as well! Several events were controversial!
@rafaelsoyyo1981 Your own countryman was a referee during that game, and says the US won. He went so far as to refuse to sign the scorebook, making the game not official. Team USA didn't lose, but were robbed by numerous rule violations, including a grave one by FIBA's secretary-general.
@smartalek65. Justin Gatlin - cheat. Marion Jones - cheat. Do you want me to go on? You sanctimonious moron? I can and the list is endless - Carl 'I only took stimulants' Lewis....................
@smartalek65 Touched a nerve there I see. Not happy when one points out that those people who live in glass houses really should not throw stones. Broken windows and terrible draughts et al. Ciao :-)
@rc2869 Actually, no, you're wrong. You don't call someone a name and then falsely claim that they called you one in response to your "point" when responded to in kind, son. I repeat: your ridiculous fingerpointing had what to do with the topic of official misconduct in the 1972 olympic basketball final?
@smartalek65 Oh deary me. Really have plucked the brows here. I'll spell it out - ;...but were robbed by numerous rule violations,......' is an opinion due to what are perceived to be injustices from the US point of view. The other US sports performers I refer to certainly are responsible for cheating others out of accreditations.
Seems to me the final whistle had yet to be complete due to confusing incidents. Play to the whistle boyo - play to the whistle (or buzzer) - the Final One. ;-)
@marianovallejos It's Alexander Belov, the player who scored the controversial basket for the Soviets. He died in 1978 at age 26 of causes that aren't clear.
@Spetsnazovets USSR won, but they needed from the refs help to do it! The funny part is, the Soviets needed help to beat our AMATEURS, just imagine if they had to play our professionals!
@Spetsnazovets So the USSR has the gold medals. Why worry about what the USA says? I wouldn't be holding my breath for the USA to "get over it." It could be bad for your health.
@Spetsnazovets Well you do care somewhat other wise you wouldn't be posting here. If the Soviet team doesn't mind having tainted gold medals that's OK with me.
@XxCeltics34xX Typical pathetic underage loser. I live in Australia and NOT in USofA or Russia. If you can't face the truth without going nuts then tough luck.
Also. On the subject of going back their country of origin. In that case ALL anglo-saxon, hispanic, asian and all others that are not of American Indian origin should return to the country of origin of their predecessors. Unless you are American Indian you should keep your mouth shut. BANG MoFo :)
@sivret20 Communist? I live in a capitalist country. Yet another moronic comment I see thousands of daily on YT.
Losers try their best. Winners fuck the from queen. USSR were winners.
You are yet another pathetic person that resorts to name calling to try to get his "we are better then you" across except you fail miserably at it while at the same time displaying your inability to move on with life.
@Spetsnazovets Only faggots say YT. Most people have no idea what you're talking about when you say that. The fact of the matter is the United States won the game, and FIBA did a completely incompetent job judging the ruling, since it was all Cold War politics. Do you even understand basketball? And what is a "from queen" I don't understand. And once again, the USSR has broken up, maybe you're the one that is living in the past.
@sivret20 Now you are being so pathetic that you clutch onto a typo.
USA won the game? Look at the score board :)
So you are accusing the FIBA of being bought by USSR? Prove it in court :)
Another instance of name calling. Doesn't surprise me. You are nothing but a very sad person. You talk about "MOST" when you actually have no idea who does and doesn't understand YT acronym. You are even more pathetic then I possibly thought.
I live in present. USSR is gone. But History isn't.
@Spetsnazovets Being bought with the USSR? How about being allied with the USSR? Cuba, Poland, and Hungary were the three countries that denied the American protest (all allied with the Soviets in case you didn't know). And the United States technically did win the game. The refs just said they didn't. Congratulations on having to cheat in order to beat a bunch of amateurs with your professional team.
@Spetsnazovets Winners drink champagne? Look who's dominated basketball the past century? You had to cheat (because yes, that's what's the soviets did and everyone knows it) to beat a team of amateurs. Have fun with one of the USSR/Russia's 2 gold medals. Way to not bring up an argument in your last point. Have fun in Australia.
@sivret20 We are talking about THIS game. Not the rest of them. I disn't cry that US cheats on field. They win I say good on them. I don't cry foul when my team loses.
Who knows that Soviets cheated? The people that can't accept the truth like you? pfft
I do have fun in Australia.
This convo is over. You didn't win. I just can't be bothered wasting time on a pathetic loser that you are. I won't answer any more. Goodbye.
@Spetsnazovets Dude, you got humiliated all through this conversation.... I guess if you can delude yourself into thinking that you "won" while you're running back to the hole you crawled out of with your tail between your legs, you'll feel better. Congrats!
@goten1214 All that matters is the scoreboard buddy :) I feel great thank you very much. USA can't accept defeat and every loser who can't move on now cries foul. Oh well. Get well soon losers :) I don't feel humiliated. Its those crying foul that do so :D
@Spetsnazovets All that matters is the scoreboard? Well, I just checked and the USA owns the scoreboard in Olympic basketball. At least you can live in 1972 or 1988. We'll live in 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2008. And 2012 next summer. :)
what the fuck is with the beginning of this video? makes a sport as fun as basketball look so serious and depressing. this 1972 soviet union team is forever tainted. they cheated and they know it. three do-overs!? disgraceful and shameful!
@Indoom11782 look at the replay. inbounder's foot on the line. not to mention the fact that the russians were never really granted an actual timeout. if that were so, the US would've have made a substitution. and yes, i know exactly what a communist is, since i've lived around them for 5 years! what, are u on their side or something? what arrogance
@Indoom11782 and next time, phrase the question so that it actually makes sense. i'm not trying to start an argument, i'm simply saying that there was definitely an outside influence acting on that game.
our average players beat your stars many times so don't think that you're the greatest, today none team can win that way.... and yes maybe you have best league in the world, but you simply don't know how to play like a team... and yes i agree russians are weak now and they'll probably lose tonight... but i hope we'll see in the final and show you who is the best european basketball team.... and by the way just compare your gold medals on every olympics with soviet and you'll see everything
@milos9901 hey dude. Wait, who just dominated their way throught the World Championships? The United States, without any of their star players. Our "B" team dominated every other team. Russia fucking sucks. and they united states has 2.5 times as many overall medals as the Soviet Union did at the Olympics, and the Soviet Union has only missed like 8, so your an idiot.
@jp87654 dominated over teams who never ever had a chance for medal... and first of you won your 4th gold medal on world championship after 16 years!!! yugoslavia and now serbia have 5 gold medals 1970,'78,'90,'98 and 2002!!! USSR just 3! and first look at some statistics of medals at olympic games and you'll see that you never had more gold medals than soviet union except when you were hosting the games! first learn something and don't be a fool!
@jp87654 and you always think that you're best in everything and when you lose than you think that everybody cheated!! cheating is that what turkey did to usin semifinal and tried to do with you too!! that's cheating! my honest opinion is that your "B" team is much better than your stars! and you need to admit sometimes that you're not always the best!! true champion is that who now's how is the feel to be defeated!
@milos9901 dude, no one gives a shit about the world championships in america. most people have never heard of them. its the olympics that we care about. and yea, we didnt win gold in 2004, but we came right back in 2008 and won it, with many of the players knowing what it was like losing in the olympics. typical russian, always contradicting himself
@jp87654 hah correction not russian i'm serbian... so what... for this small country we have a lot olympic medals, one gold in moscow, 4 silver medals and 1 bronze... i didn't meant only players, they know of course how is it to lose.... but whole your nation is too proud and think that you're the best... but you're not always! how would you feel that USA lost semifinal on the olympics from turkey like we did?! obvious cheating and sold game!
@milos9901 i mean, when it comes to most sports we are the best. but because we're the best team, we have a big target on out back, and for that I expect to lose some games. but we have the right to be proud when we continuosly dominate at the olympics
you americans are really stupid... you don't know to admit a defeat!! and you'll never be a great team!! you'll just be stupid NBA allstar... you don't know how to play with european "amateurs" haha
@jp87654 hehehe when is the last time you won world championship, hm?? who beat you at home 7 years ago?? "Dream team Dream on" remember that?? we'll see what will be this year heheh
@milos9901 all we care about is the olympics. hmm lets see, the U.S. basketball team has participated at the summer olympics 16 times. we have won it 13 times and medaled the other 3. do the math.
@milos9901 HAH. This is the first time in US History we've taken the FIBA tournament even a little bit serious, and even then it's not even our best players. Russia is going to be sent back to the Cold War by the time the final buzzer sounds, it'll be over by halftime.
@milos9901 that's why all of your "good" players come to the NBA and become average players right? We've produced the best athletes in the world, why the hell do you think every country wants to beat us? We don't even have our top 5 players in the NBA on this FIBA roster, and we're wiping the floor with each and every country.
to both russian and american fans here arguing about cheating...let me give you some words of wisdom. life isnt black and white, even if the tv sets back then were. its all about shades of grey. the series of events that occured in the last 3 seconds of this game were extremely rare and weird. the refs were confused and botched certain things. the refs and timeskeepers need to be blamed for making mistakes. the players had nothing to do with it, other than just to play ball.
also, if for example on the 2nd inbounds play the game had ended and usa had won. do you realize how many russians would argue how their team had been royally screwed? if you think about it, on the first two inbounds plays, russia was that team that got screwed. on the last one, team usa screwed themselves over by not defending well. and they also can argue that russia got 3 chances. while russians can argue that those 2 chances before werent legit chances cuz refs messed up twice.
the story is there was a conflict over that last play. the first ref said russia fouled usa. the second ref looked at it and said usa was fouled again. the last ref said russia didnt foul them and somehow russia took the gold medal even though the majority of the votes was given to usa. rootbers right the silver medals are still in the vault. they belong to russia.
The players then what is to blame? They just played and won! The rest, that's politics and politicking! I remember how Canadians (curly couple) in Salt Lake have enough conscience to climb to first place with the Russian figure skaters! What was it correct? So there is nothing to whine, you need to play to the end ...
Do you think that Russian is not just a little judged? Yes, constantly! Remember only those shameful Olympic Games in Salt Lake! Remembered? And what do you say to that?
What the fuck is this bullshit!! How the fuck are you going to glamorize a team that only got the gold through the biggest travesty in Olympic History??!!
This was utterly improper and actually against FIBA rules. The soviet asst coach should have been called for a technical foul for being on the court during play. The only fair solution after all these years, would be to award gold medals to the US Olympic team, just as the IOC has awarded duplicate gold medals in other sports when technical issues altered the outcome.
@wildwestweasel1979 the americans couldnt defend a full court alleyhoop with 3 seconds on the clock. Congratulations! Also the first two times, the Russians had 3 seconds, but the refs didnt let them get the full 3 seconds. the first time they stopped play 2 seconds in because of confusion. the 2nd time the buzzer went off less than 1 second into the play. the 3rd time the american defenders fell asleep. is it more an issue of russians getting lucky, or american defenders being retards...
Just read the description. Thanks for pointing that out. I've seen the game and I'll be sure to let original poster know about the error.
As for people who say the US lost. You can't restart a game 3 times, tell the person guarding the inbound passer to back away, have the inbounder step over the line, and have the person catching the inbound pass arguably foul the defender. Also, the Brazilian ref refused to sign the score
I was born in 1986 but I am so proud of my Soviet brothers for defeating the Americans with blood, sweat and tears, in their own game! These moments in history make me proud to be Russian! Ura!
Congrats to the USSR on this "win". Must suck to know that you have to cheat for everything you get. Kudos to the USA team for not accepting the silver medals, clearly they won the gold twice in that one game.
were you fucking there? No, you were watching the game through your b&w 2 inch tv. Besides, you are american, of course youll say "fuck them commies, theys cheated."
Im just in awe that this is even a debate. You cheated. Its right there to see. I know a lot of things to be true that i wasn't there to see. Americans get beat all the time. Get beat all the time by Russian too. That doesn't mean they cheat all the time. Its just this time, you cheated.
No, the Russian team themselves didn't cheat. They just took advantage of the 3 last-second chances that were afforded to them by the international basketball officials sitting courtside. Russia didn't screw the U.S., FIBA did.
thats a good point. Everyone is so quick to blame the russian team itself, but the real blame lies with FIBA, they are the ones who apparently have a blatant disregard for rules.
I remember it clearly as though it were only yesterday, because i have never laught so much at an american defeat. They were'nt even gracious enough to turn up at the medal presentations. Typical Americans !!!!!!

according to the rule thn, there were many mistakes by the refs, the clock keepers, Jones - who has NO authority to go into the game and change the decision of the refs, the 3 inbounds after the free throws by collins w/the rule of NO stopage, the last 3 second of the game should have been a CHRIS WEBBER RULE that C-webb did at Michigan. Game over, USA won!!! to much mistakes. If the US nominate and vote for Hall of Fame the '72 USA men's b-team, IOC, Russia, FIBA, and all would go nuts.
tswjxeem 6 months ago
@spetsnazovets The fact is that FIBA gave Team USA the shaft. R. William-Jones ordered the officials to grant a timeout not permitted by 1972 rules, reset the clock in violation of 1972 rules, and to replay a play-again in violation of rules he swore to uphold; and in direct violation of FIBA's bylaws. Don't tell me TeamUSA had no reason to think they got the shaft. It was completely unfair, and you know it.

This is unacceptable behavior by Jones, and it directly affected the outcome of the game.
smartalek65 9 months ago 4
CONT'D confronted by the press, but later admitted his actions, and not long before his death in 1981 acknowledged that he had no authority to act. On-court officials couldn't restore time to the clock, and couldn't grant timeouts during live play, remember. Had Jones not interfered, the second "attempt" would have been the final one, with more than likely the same result as the real second attempt, as only 1 second remained. To those who, supporting the Soviets, say that the timeout CONT'D

The ball was inbounded and was dribbled to a point in front of the Soviet bench, where play was stopped by Brazilian referee Renato Righetto, who had noticed a disturbance near the scorer's table.

Then he talks of political things that had nothing whatever to do with the game under discussion here...
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 I said they were presented Gold Medals for not turning up which you have jazzed up as 'sacrifice'. - which is what you have just written. Oh dear how is the foot feeling now you have metaphorical bullet in it. Presenting and accepting Gold Medals for not turning up deary deary me - ha ha and you call me ignorant. Why not get some Congressional ones done for the 1972 team as the IOC won't be presenting anytime soon.
rc2869 9 months ago
@rc2869 Wrong again, oh deluded one. YOU said that they were given for "winning" the Olympics. The US government gave them to those athletes, not for the purpose YOU state. Clear enough?
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 first poiint stated for not turning up and the inference of such Gold Medals is for winning.
rc2869 9 months ago
@smartalek65 Are you setting yourself up as a rival organisation to the IOC so you can give medals to who you think won comptetitions? If so I suggest Calvin Smith is given 100m gold retrosepctively for 1988, being the only one of the 1st 5 who wasn't in someway tarnished. I am supporting an American getting justice - hardly anti American is it?
rc2869 9 months ago
@rc2869 Oh, NOW you support an American getting justice, huh? For the last week or so, you've been bad-mouthing the US (and practically no other nation) with things political or other sports scandals which had naught to do with the topic at hand. And you have the raw, utter nerve to try to imply now that you weren't being anti-American? You're getting a nasty case of foot-in-mouth disease, you'd best get professional help.
smartalek65 9 months ago
@rc2869 You might want to scroll down, where you asked me to have the 1980 'winners' to present ersatz gold medals, did you not? Now it's time for YOU to open mouth and insert foot, son.
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 My broader point of links between US government and Bin Laden and the tens of thousands of lives and billions it ultimately cost is a warning to all governments in chosing friends and allies which you interpret as Anti-American - paranoid beyond belief . Hence the reference to beam and eyes own and neighbours. In the broader worldwide context I think that is a relevant point, except to those who think the most important thing is a ball game over 40 years ago that they can't change.
rc2869 9 months ago
@rc2869 Just never mind the fact that your "broader point" has no relevance at all to the topic of discussion, which IS that ball game played nearly 40 years ago. Fact is, R. William Jones gave orders he had no authority to give which directly affected the outcome of that game. Bottom line, son. You have never given any rule as justification that would have allowed it, therefore you tacitly admit that TeamUSA not the Soviets earned those gold medals.
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 I tthink it does and am admitting nothing of the sort. The USSR won following some major confusion around time keeping. They played to the whistle The US (apart from on court tactical naievety whis the real reason they Lost) also made a glaring error in not turning up to the Olympic ceremony - that was disrespectful to the Soviet and Cuban athletes and fellow competitors. Nothing wrong if they felt an injuustice if at the presentation they refused them
rc2869 9 months ago
@rc2869 I put no words in your mouth, boy. I gave you the only choice you have: show the rules that permitted Jones' action OR admit I'm right. That's the bottom line, son. You can quit being the whining cry-baby anytime by no longer repeating irrelevant anti-American propoganda to excuse the official misconduct that occured.
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 The bottom line 51-50 -and playing to the final whistle following some confusion in the final few seconds. The last play which included US players - I do believe. The USSR were presented with Gold Medals as winners. They did nothing wrong.
rc2869 9 months ago
@rc2869 To say the Soviets did nothing wrong only obscures the issue at hand: that OFFICIAL misconduct is what cost the US the game. OFFICIAL, not Soviet, please note.
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 The bottom line 51-50 -and playing to the final whistle following some confusion in the final few seconds. The last play which included US players - I do believe. The game was still alive and the USSR scored and were presented with Gold Medals as winners. They did nothing wrong.
rc2869 9 months ago
CONT'D admit that I'm right, the Soviets did NOT earn those medals. Face it, no rule existed in 1972 that allowed Jones to interfere in a game in progress, FIBA rules forbade it. There's no justification for the review panel's decision-the horn that sounded ended the game with the US ahead, 50-49.
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 Once more you try to put words into my mouth, I am not going to admit you are right. The US should have been concentrating when the clock was re-set whatever the reason. They got their tactics wrong from the start and the final play was school boy error and 51-50 was the Final Score. USSR did earn the medals. Play to the whistle - the final whistle. Continue to amuse me with your cry-baby antics if you want.
rc2869 9 months ago
@smartalek65 How are those Gold medal re-prints coming along? Get Jimmy Carter to present them is my thought -after all he has far more credibility now than he did 30 years ago.
rc2869 9 months ago
CONT'D Obviously, I'm not the only one who thinks rules should have been upheld and felt strongly about it. Tenschert told the review panel chairman to his face at a news conference of his lies. Rhigetti refused to sign the official scorebook. Both say that under FIBA rules the US won that game. Either come up with an actual rule that permitted Jones' action or CONT'D
smartalek65 9 months ago
@rc2869 Excuses: those things that YOU state to get around the FACT that Jones had no authority to do what he did in awarding another chance. That is blatant misconduct, little boy, and your own countryman-Renato Rhigetti, an on court official at that game-recognized it, as did Hans Tenschert, the scorer that day. CONT'D
smartalek65 9 months ago
CONT'D Just to demonstrate how little you know, hoops has been an olympic sport since 1932, with full medal status since 1936. No matter the outcome of that game in 1972, it would have continued as an olympic sport. Competition was improving-the Soviets weren't the only team to give the US a tough game, Brazil played just as close, just cleaner than the USSR. Jones' misconduct wasn't needed.
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 er sorry you are telling me nothing new. Jones was key person in ensuring it had a continued Olympic status - not as a result of this match, rather due to his hard work in the preceding decades, especially post-WWII.
rc2869 9 months ago
@rc2869 Your "points" about Reagan, Bush, mujahadeen, etc. are IRRELEVANT. It's YOU who are sanctimonious here. As for the only relevant statement you made: remember, Jones had NO AUTHORITY UNDER FIBA RULES to do what he did. Fair is fair, the final horn HAD sounded with the score 50-49. TeamUSA DID "play to the last whistle," and Jones' MISCONDUCT awarded the Soviets another chance-AGAINST THE RULES. That's what matters here. CONT'D
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 More excuses - the US team played on and at the Final Whistle was 51-50. FACT! I feel sorry for you, albeit you amuse me - you seem to have some psychological deficiencies. The US played on after their early crow celebrations. All the Team US had to do was put the really big lankywhite guy at the back of the court instead of the shorter black guy. Schoolboy error. As I said before - get some Gold Medals made for the US team as you feel so strongly - nothing stopping you.
rc2869 9 months ago
CONT'D Frankly, you're admitting Team USA was treated unfairly; yet you dwell on the irrelevant. Like US athletes caught violating rules-as if nobody else did. Or Carter's awarding medals to athletes which nobody but you deludes themselves into saying it was for winning the olympics. Then there's the dispicable reference to 9-11. USSR did NOT earn hoops gold in 1972.
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 Nope I'm admitting nothing other than the USSR won as the final score was 51-50 and were presented with Gold. The Soviet players did nothing wrong. Without Jones there wouldn't be a discussion because hoops wouldn't ever have been an Olympic Sport likely as not. Blah blah. You fail to address any of my points - please first remove the beam from thy eye before the speck of dust from they neighbours. Sanctimonious as per my original post. You type a lot and say nothing.
rc2869 9 months ago
@smartalek65 And please don't tell me there wasn't a link between Reagan and Bush senior's support for Mujahadean and ultimately Bin Laden fighting the Soviets and roll forward 15 years later and the despicable attacks on 9-11 on Pea-Brain Bush Junior's watch. USSR did earn the hoops - the final play of the match was awesome. Kareem, Bird, Jordan, Johnson would have been proud and done the same in the Soviets place. Play to the whistle as taught in nursery school, leave nothing to chance
rc2869 9 months ago
CONT'D The final would have been 50-49, BY THE RULES. 1) If Jones obeys the rules, the game ends, and no 3rd attempt even occurs. Or 2) the review panel ignores politics and rules (correctly) that Jones exceeded his authority in interfering with a game in progress, thereby disallowing the 3rd attempt and the resulting score. CONT'D
smartalek65 9 months ago
@rc2869 Then you admit to the OFFICIAL MISCONDUCT that occured? Your repeating irrelevant "points" only seems to indicate a reluctance to discuss that misconduct-first by R. William Jones on the court, then by the lies told by the review panel to uphold the result. Fact is, had either Jones or the panel gone by the rules, the last attempt wouldn't have officially occured. CONT'D
smartalek65 9 months ago
@rc2869 You only say that because you have no facts to answer the truth. Tenschert went so far as to tell the chairman of the panel at the news conference that his "facts" supporting rejection of the US protest were falsehoods. He and Righetti both state unequivocally that the US won under FIBA rules. Obviously, Americans aren't alone in thinking USSR didn't earn those medals.
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 The truth is the USSR were given the medals. 51-50 is a win in anyone's book other than yours. There are lots of people who think they did earn them. The Soviet reps on court did nothing wrong other than play to the final whistle - unlike your countrymen. I also sited your countrymen who deliberately and systematically robbed others of glory. Get some replica Gold Medals coined. Give them to the US team if you feel so strongly and seem to have nothing better to do.
rc2869 9 months ago
@smartalek65 @rc2869 In fact get the 1980 'winners' to present them. The ones that Jimmy Carter gave gold medals too. You know the games where you didn't turn up because the Russians invaded Afghanistan. How ironic that those your military supported in defeating the Russains then used support to fly planes into your iconic buildings.
rc2869 9 months ago
@rc2869 Let's see, as I recall, these individuals were suitably punished for their wrongdoings-like being stripped of medals, yes? Justice was done. Where's the justice for TeamUSA for the OFFICIAL misconduct done them here? None was had. The official scorekeeper and an on-court official both say the US won under FIBA rules.
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 Groundhog day for sanctimonious Man. Is e.g. Obikweylo referred to as Olympic Champion - er No. Jones has her medals confiscated, Gatlin? Lewis? I wonder who would have won the golds in 1972 had such drug detecting methods been employed. USSR and GDR would have lost many as would USA. To be fair at least you allowed blacks an equal fotting in represention by this stage. As for the match under IOC rules the USA came second - am I wrong? Pray tell?
rc2869 9 months ago
@rc2869 Actually, you are wrong. The IOC delegates the competitions to the international bodies that administer the sport in question-including using that bodies' rules. Under FIBA rules, R. W. Jones had no right to be courtside, let alone to order time put back on the clock. Hans Tenschert, the scorekeeper, and Renato Righetti, the Brazilian on-court official, both say that the US won under FIBA rules. Righetti went so far as to refuse to sign the scorebook, making the game unofficial.
smartalek65 9 months ago
@smartalek65 Blah blah blah - That's just a noise :-). You whine better than any of my countrymen. USSR Gold medal winners. Fact! IOC presented the medals I do believe. The US can award themselves Gold Medals if they want - I mean they did in 1980 for NOT turning up.

You are yet another pathetic person that resorts to name calling to try to get his "we are better then you" across except you fail miserably at it while at the same time displaying your inability to move on with life.
Spetsnazovets 3 months ago
@Spetsnazovets Only faggots say YT. Most people have no idea what you're talking about when you say that. The fact of the matter is the United States won the game, and FIBA did a completely incompetent job judging the ruling, since it was all Cold War politics. Do you even understand basketball? And what is a "from queen" I don't understand. And once again, the USSR has broken up, maybe you're the one that is living in the past.
sivret20 3 months ago
@sivret20 Now you are being so pathetic that you clutch onto a typo.
USA won the game? Look at the score board :)
So you are accusing the FIBA of being bought by USSR? Prove it in court :)
Another instance of name calling. Doesn't surprise me. You are nothing but a very sad person. You talk about "MOST" when you actually have no idea who does and doesn't understand YT acronym. You are even more pathetic then I possibly thought.
I live in present. USSR is gone. But History isn't.
Spetsnazovets 3 months ago
@Spetsnazovets Being bought with the USSR? How about being allied with the USSR? Cuba, Poland, and Hungary were the three countries that denied the American protest (all allied with the Soviets in case you didn't know). And the United States technically did win the game. The refs just said they didn't. Congratulations on having to cheat in order to beat a bunch of amateurs with your professional team.
sivret20 3 months ago
@sivret20 Keep crying "cheating" kiddo. Winners drink Champagne and losers cry "foul". Should have played better.
Out.
Spetsnazovets 3 months ago
@Spetsnazovets Winners drink champagne? Look who's dominated basketball the past century? You had to cheat (because yes, that's what's the soviets did and everyone knows it) to beat a team of amateurs. Have fun with one of the USSR/Russia's 2 gold medals. Way to not bring up an argument in your last point. Have fun in Australia.
sivret20 3 months ago
@sivret20 We are talking about THIS game. Not the rest of them. I disn't cry that US cheats on field. They win I say good on them. I don't cry foul when my team loses.
Who knows that Soviets cheated? The people that can't accept the truth like you? pfft
I do have fun in Australia.
This convo is over. You didn't win. I just can't be bothered wasting time on a pathetic loser that you are. I won't answer any more. Goodbye.
Spetsnazovets 3 months ago
@Spetsnazovets I think you said "out" in the last comment, make up your mind.
sivret20 3 months ago
@Spetsnazovets Dude, you got humiliated all through this conversation.... I guess if you can delude yourself into thinking that you "won" while you're running back to the hole you crawled out of with your tail between your legs, you'll feel better. Congrats!
goten1214 3 months ago
@goten1214 All that matters is the scoreboard buddy :) I feel great thank you very much. USA can't accept defeat and every loser who can't move on now cries foul. Oh well. Get well soon losers :) I don't feel humiliated. Its those crying foul that do so :D
Spetsnazovets 3 months ago
@Spetsnazovets All that matters is the scoreboard? Well, I just checked and the USA owns the scoreboard in Olympic basketball. At least you can live in 1972 or 1988. We'll live in 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2008. And 2012 next summer. :)
goten1214 3 months ago
@goten1214 yes but gold medal to USA is a given. I would like more drama in this sport other than going to play for 2nd place.
1PunchKO100 2 months ago
what the fuck is with the beginning of this video? makes a sport as fun as basketball look so serious and depressing. this 1972 soviet union team is forever tainted. they cheated and they know it. three do-overs!? disgraceful and shameful!

Indoom11782 1 year ago
@Indoom11782 look at the replay. inbounder's foot on the line. not to mention the fact that the russians were never really granted an actual timeout. if that were so, the US would've have made a substitution. and yes, i know exactly what a communist is, since i've lived around them for 5 years! what, are u on their side or something? what arrogance
Polishkid88 1 year ago
@Indoom11782 and next time, phrase the question so that it actually makes sense. i'm not trying to start an argument, i'm simply saying that there was definitely an outside influence acting on that game.
Polishkid88 1 year ago
our average players beat your stars many times so don't think that you're the greatest, today none team can win that way.... and yes maybe you have best league in the world, but you simply don't know how to play like a team... and yes i agree russians are weak now and they'll probably lose tonight... but i hope we'll see in the final and show you who is the best european basketball team.... and by the way just compare your gold medals on every olympics with soviet and you'll see everything
milos9901 1 year ago
@milos9901 hey dude. Wait, who just dominated their way throught the World Championships? The United States, without any of their star players. Our "B" team dominated every other team. Russia fucking sucks. and they united states has 2.5 times as many overall medals as the Soviet Union did at the Olympics, and the Soviet Union has only missed like 8, so your an idiot.
jp87654 1 year ago
@jp87654 dominated over teams who never ever had a chance for medal... and first of you won your 4th gold medal on world championship after 16 years!!! yugoslavia and now serbia have 5 gold medals 1970,'78,'90,'98 and 2002!!! USSR just 3! and first look at some statistics of medals at olympic games and you'll see that you never had more gold medals than soviet union except when you were hosting the games! first learn something and don't be a fool!
milos9901 1 year ago
@jp87654 and you always think that you're best in everything and when you lose than you think that everybody cheated!! cheating is that what turkey did to usin semifinal and tried to do with you too!! that's cheating! my honest opinion is that your "B" team is much better than your stars! and you need to admit sometimes that you're not always the best!! true champion is that who now's how is the feel to be defeated!
milos9901 1 year ago
@milos9901 dude, no one gives a shit about the world championships in america. most people have never heard of them. its the olympics that we care about. and yea, we didnt win gold in 2004, but we came right back in 2008 and won it, with many of the players knowing what it was like losing in the olympics. typical russian, always contradicting himself
jp87654 1 year ago
@jp87654 hah correction not russian i'm serbian... so what... for this small country we have a lot olympic medals, one gold in moscow, 4 silver medals and 1 bronze... i didn't meant only players, they know of course how is it to lose.... but whole your nation is too proud and think that you're the best... but you're not always! how would you feel that USA lost semifinal on the olympics from turkey like we did?! obvious cheating and sold game!
milos9901 1 year ago
@milos9901 i mean, when it comes to most sports we are the best. but because we're the best team, we have a big target on out back, and for that I expect to lose some games. but we have the right to be proud when we continuosly dominate at the olympics
jp87654 1 year ago
you americans are really stupid... you don't know to admit a defeat!! and you'll never be a great team!! you'll just be stupid NBA allstar... you don't know how to play with european "amateurs" haha
milos9901 1 year ago
@milos9901 hahahah then why are we the most successful international basketball team in the world.
jp87654 1 year ago
@jp87654 hehehe when is the last time you won world championship, hm?? who beat you at home 7 years ago?? "Dream team Dream on" remember that?? we'll see what will be this year heheh
milos9901 1 year ago
@milos9901 all we care about is the olympics. hmm lets see, the U.S. basketball team has participated at the summer olympics 16 times. we have won it 13 times and medaled the other 3. do the math.
jp87654 1 year ago
@milos9901 HAH. This is the first time in US History we've taken the FIBA tournament even a little bit serious, and even then it's not even our best players. Russia is going to be sent back to the Cold War by the time the final buzzer sounds, it'll be over by halftime.
stoopkids 1 year ago
@milos9901 that's why all of your "good" players come to the NBA and become average players right? We've produced the best athletes in the world, why the hell do you think every country wants to beat us? We don't even have our top 5 players in the NBA on this FIBA roster, and we're wiping the floor with each and every country.

Great respect to the team that played till the final whistle, instead of celebrating the victory that they didn't gain yet

Wonder where that Gold medal is sitting today ... probably dust covered and lost in some abandoned soviet basement on the outskirts of Minsk.

to both russian and american fans here arguing about cheating...let me give you some words of wisdom. life isnt black and white, even if the tv sets back then were. its all about shades of grey. the series of events that occured in the last 3 seconds of this game were extremely rare and weird. the refs were confused and botched certain things. the refs and timeskeepers need to be blamed for making mistakes. the players had nothing to do with it, other than just to play ball.
is2150 1 year ago
also, if for example on the 2nd inbounds play the game had ended and usa had won. do you realize how many russians would argue how their team had been royally screwed? if you think about it, on the first two inbounds plays, russia was that team that got screwed. on the last one, team usa screwed themselves over by not defending well. and they also can argue that russia got 3 chances. while russians can argue that those 2 chances before werent legit chances cuz refs messed up twice.
is2150 1 year ago
@is2150 I agree with this. I do not believe the Soviets cheated. However, I think the refs screwed it up in favor of the Soviets (not on purpose).
thefinalbattalion 1 year ago
the story is there was a conflict over that last play. the first ref said russia fouled usa. the second ref looked at it and said usa was fouled again. the last ref said russia didnt foul them and somehow russia took the gold medal even though the majority of the votes was given to usa. rootbers right the silver medals are still in the vault. they belong to russia.
bmmx22196 1 year ago
The players then what is to blame? They just played and won! The rest, that's politics and politicking! I remember how Canadians (curly couple) in Salt Lake have enough conscience to climb to first place with the Russian figure skaters! What was it correct? So there is nothing to whine, you need to play to the end ...
3ucMeHTypA 1 year ago
Do you think that Russian is not just a little judged? Yes, constantly! Remember only those shameful Olympic Games in Salt Lake! Remembered? And what do you say to that?
3ucMeHTypA 1 year ago
What the fuck is this bullshit!! How the fuck are you going to glamorize a team that only got the gold through the biggest travesty in Olympic History??!!
lifewouldbeadream 1 year ago
This was utterly improper and actually against FIBA rules. The soviet asst coach should have been called for a technical foul for being on the court during play. The only fair solution after all these years, would be to award gold medals to the US Olympic team, just as the IOC has awarded duplicate gold medals in other sports when technical issues altered the outcome.

The USSR scored one basket in three tries. Congratulation!
wildwestweasel1979 1 year ago
@wildwestweasel1979 the americans couldnt defend a full court alleyhoop with 3 seconds on the clock. Congratulations! Also the first two times, the Russians had 3 seconds, but the refs didnt let them get the full 3 seconds. the first time they stopped play 2 seconds in because of confusion. the 2nd time the buzzer went off less than 1 second into the play. the 3rd time the american defenders fell asleep. is it more an issue of russians getting lucky, or american defenders being retards...

rustaayy 2 years ago
Just read the description. Thanks for pointing that out. I've seen the game and I'll be sure to let original poster know about the error.
As for people who say the US lost. You can't restart a game 3 times, tell the person guarding the inbound passer to back away, have the inbounder step over the line, and have the person catching the inbound pass arguably foul the defender. Also, the Brazilian ref refused to sign the score

Congrats to the USSR on this "win". Must suck to know that you have to cheat for everything you get. Kudos to the USA team for not accepting the silver medals, clearly they won the gold twice in that one game.

rustaayy 2 years ago
Im just in awe that this is even a debate. You cheated. Its right there to see. I know a lot of things to be true that i wasn't there to see. Americans get beat all the time. Get beat all the time by Russian too. That doesn't mean they cheat all the time. Its just this time, you cheated.
rusinrockt 2 years ago
No, the Russian team themselves didn't cheat. They just took advantage of the 3 last-second chances that were afforded to them by the international basketball officials sitting courtside. Russia didn't screw the U.S., FIBA did.
2redaces 2 years ago
thats a good point. Everyone is so quick to blame the russian team itself, but the real blame lies with FIBA, they are the ones who apparently have a blatant disregard for rules.
