With Goemon you can double jump to the second pole, and with Ebisumaru you can reach it by jumping under it and pressing down. Just up is necessary for a few missions, but I rarely miss with diagonal up-right/up-left
Yeah I had waited for Megaman 64 and Quest 64 but that was a pipe dream. But of course also The goemon games, I was the only one of my friends to play this version though.
Hahaha! It took me forever to figure out how to swing on those bars. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. This games was actually really hard when I was playing...I never finished it :(
@Bladedlightning actually Thwomps are based of off medieval japanese demos and ghost :P same goes for the enemies in Goemon so neither is a ripoff of either.

to swing with the poles, you point the stick diagonally up right and try to aim on the next pole. There's some coins at the end of it.
