mmmmmmmmmm, interesting that there are no rules to writing/performong music. He didn't de-tune the snare...it is what it is. If Joy Division followed rules it would be -verse, chorous, verse chorous, guitar solo, end of song. Arrrghhhh. Some people don't get it. That's ok, maybe that is the way. It is called exploring new territories and breaking new ground.
i heard in the facebook group that u can see the whole thing at itnsourceXcom X for . idk if its true cuz i looked for it but never found it :P but if anyone finds it plz reply to me with the link or something kthxbai
Ian continues to fascinate me. After a long lapse of listening to their music, I return to find something so hypnotising, so captivating, and so fucking contemparary it seems they've been trapped in a time capsule. One part of me, my critical/judemental observation on music should be telling me that Ian's singing is a amateur, weak, and out of tune, yet it hooks me into a desperate, haunting, and above all, inexplainable place. Absolutely profound.
Sadly there were no video interviews with Ian, but there may be some interviews with him for music papers such as NME and Melody Maker, but I can't be sure on that.
@vaughanography Granada TV had the full performance for purchase on their website recently. I don't have a direct link. I downloaded the preview which is the full performance without audio. I hope that some kind soul who paid the full amount eventually posts it.
The full version of this HAS to be included on any future JD compilation DVD. Why can't they sort it out? A compilation of Substance/HATYM plus extras would be nice.
The full clip length is 2mins 30 secs, and it has been confirmed that this still exists in Granada TV's archives. The whole clip has never been shown since 1979, and even though it's short it's still great to see this. Maybe the full clip will surface one day. Thanks for posting.
it was available to view for a while from the ITN archive page.I watched the whole clip afew times on there and downloaded it too.You get the program credits over the end.
The original broadcast was sadly not complete. The band had the credits displayed over them. The last shot you see is of Curtis singing into the camera the second line of the last verse - part of the third line can be heard behind a Granada title card. It's strange that no complete video/audio of this has ever surfaced.
Ah yes, I've heard about the cutting short towards the end. I think there's a audio recording on one of the many bootlegs, I have no idea which one though.
The full clip can be seen here: watch?v=HWyRutZDd9k&feature=related
The quality isn't quite as good as this version but this the only copy of the full clip I've seen posted anywhere.

I have posted the full silent clip with overdubbed sound. I couldn't afford to pay for the video with sound since it's over £100!

This is amazingly rare! however, it's a bit scary. Ian sounds like he's snarling, but it's damn awesome!

Awk thats a shame......
Do you know how i could see the full performance of this video?
Thanks for the reply ;)
davieshambles08 2 years ago
Sadly that's impossible, this performance seems to have been lost in time, it's never been on bootlegs OR been officially released.

The complete video is available on ITN's site. Unfortunately, there's no audio, unless you pay a whopping £149.

I would LOVE to see the whole version of this, Ian looks like he's gonna break into one hell of a mental dead fly dance.
