What's historically significant about this video is that they used a Bosch FGX 4000, a machine designed for flying logos, to do the character animation. The animation looked crude even back in the day, but it blew us away to know they pulled it off with this machine. Same trick was used later for "Money for Nothing". An immense amount of work, something like using a chain saw to shave. Even with a few nicks it's a good trick.
Thank you! I have been looking for this song for months. I always loved the song AND the video (wow! she is so smokin' hot! I wonder who she is and where she is now?)
The computer graphics were state of the art, even before Dire Straits' Money for Nothing.
I remember spending couple of nights taping videos from MUSIC BOX in hotel room while I was on vacation with my parents in Australia. They were playing nothing else, just videos one after another with commercials after every 3rd.Pause,record,stop if you do not like the song, rewind, find the end of previous,pause... and I ended up with 3 hour tape of videos,a gold bar for a boy from communist Yugoslavia with only 2 tv channels. And yes,I did have the crush on the girl.Only reason I looked it up now.
Had never heard this one. First I had a feeling of totall rejection, but giving it a chance and listen to it several times, openminded, I came to the conclusion that it is a good song, reily 80ties, just not what I was used of or expected from Steve Miller, but hey, that made it even more interesting
I think the only time I ever heard this song was when I saw the video while at a friend's house, probably around the same time you saw it. I don't know what was wrong with me. I have no memory of the dancing girl, or any of the live action stuff. The only thing that stuck with me was the animated character at the beginning, and the "b-b-b-bongo bongo" lyric.
As much as I've loved Steve Miller's music over the years, and I've owned every album at one time or another except for "Wide River", I must sadly say "Bongo Bongo" is possibly Miller's worst song, or at least, worst single.
I do believe I could just watch her all day long...AMAZING!!!

I love how Steve Miller always keeps pace with whatever's new out there, but still keeps his unique style.

Seriously cute. A buddy of mine pointed this song out to me shortly after it came out and I never quite forgot it.
Awsome lead dancer!

Whell.....it grows on you,
especially if you set your mind on 8T's.
Clever use of samples (for the time).
It gave good atmosphere at the bar, where
I worked,at the time./

I remember watching this video on USA Network's "Night Flight" along about 1983 or so and having the most massive crush on the dancin' girl.

This video has been played to death on the first British musicvideo satelite station MUSIC BOX in the early eighties.
