  • I agree with you, TOTenthusiast. His death is open to interpretation. Sometimes, I feel sure that the governess was at fault, because she was insane. Yet, since I love all things paranormal, I like to think that this is an off-beat ghost/possession story.

  • Does "Presence of Mind" have a "Quint at Window" equivalent? :-)

  • I think so - I'll check tomorrow.

  • *grins*

  • i am EXTREMELY confused about the ending to this storyline. does miles live or not? if not, how does he die and why? and what about his sister. What were the couple doing to both children throughout? pleasee explain? :S

  • @XxIc3Bb3Xx Miles dies at the end of the story. Why he does is open to interpretation. Do you believe that there are ghosts possessing the children? Then you could say Quint killed him. Or was the governess insane due to her sexual repression...and she scared poor Miles to death (I suspect heart attack - in some versions, it implies she broke his neck). No one really knows what happens to Flora. Mrs. Grose takes her to London and that's the last we see of her. One thing is certain...

  • @XxIc3Bb3Xx See below for other answers...but it is pretty clear that Quint and Miss Jessel were abusing the children.

  • Quint in "In A Dark Place" looked like a scoocer hooligan. Didn't like it. The "Masterpiece Theatre" version was more in the telling of the story in how how Quint looked. "Presence of Mind" was fair. Was more in the style of the "The Innocents. In '99 TOTS, the governess might've broken Miles' neck. I heard like a snap as compared to his heart giving out. I don't know if anyone noticed.

  • @ebf1957 Yes, I DEFINITELY heard Miles neck snap in the 99 version.

  • Haha.... The way you portray the ending of "In A Dark Place," makes it look like poor Miles might survive this one.... But the horrible truth is that in the next scene he drowns himself in order to escape Leelee Sobieski's abysmal "acting."

  • @HouseOnSunset LMAO!!! Yes. When I first watched the movie, I was like...OMFG...a TOTS film where Miles lives? UGH no! But you bring up another good point...we can't blame him for that!

  • I love how Sadie Frost always tries to be "ethereal" and "offbeat," but in the end always turns out just to be "retarded." Also, this Miles is a bit too old. And the fact that he acts like a 10 year old makes it even more annoying.

  • @HouseOnSunset LMAO! So true about Sadie Frost. UGH! The whole production is rather annoying and even Lauren Bacall could do little with this...and um can I just say, Fosc? Why change the name? *shakes head*

  • And why does "Fosc" (I think they changed his name to make the character a Spaniard) look like the love child of Ozzy Osbourne and Sadako from "The Ring?"

  • @HouseOnSunset Good one! Now what are your thoughts on the craptastic partial ending of "In a Dark Place"?

  • In any case, I don't get it. That whole chase between Anna and Miles added nothing, just made the ending even more confusing. (And killed the ambiguity of the story.)

  • @HouseOnSunset *nods* It was all rather silly...and it just simply made her insane. Way to kill the ambiguity. *sighs* Ugh but who are we kidding? This is one of the worst adaptations out there - that and that craptastic Italian version where...that adaptation is so loose I loathe to see Henry James' name attached to it.

  • Oh, do tell about the Italian version! Did they turn into into a softcore giallo splatter flick?

  • @HouseOnSunset Nilo Mur is 13 in this.
