I keep thinking about Blackadder and the Scarlet Pimple,Mrs. Miggins coffee shop full of dangerous Frenchies and suspicious looking sausages,Baldrick's scarlet veruca ("all the rage down our way!") le Compte de FrouFrou....and the whole hysterical bunch!
The great thing is Elizabeth & Richard has more intense chemistry that the pairing of Anthony Andrews & Jane Seymour, the overrated actress. The only good she ever did was Solitaire in that James Bond movie & that was a long, long, long, long time ago.....
i don't like the actress chosen for marguerite. she's too old for the role. Lady Blakeney is only barely over 25. but of course i could easily overlook this if she wasn't such a terrible actress. and though Grant is not my favorite pimpernel, he is, as stitchgrl777 pointed out, feisty and has panache. shrug. i can deal with him. i do enjoy Chauvelin oddly enough, though. not quite foxy enough, but a better portrayal of my favorite pimpernel villain then most others.
The lady who stars in this has had waaaaaaaayyyyy to much plastic surgery. It looks awful. Why did they cast her? Nobody had plastic surgery back in those days. It looks creepy and unrealistic.
i think Elizabeth McGovern is fine as Margurite(maybe not having a face as gorgeous as Jane Seymour) but she's a very good actress while the beautiful Seymour isn't great in acting to me, lol
@wincipoet I agree. I also find that Elizabeth McGovern's looks have grown on me over time so while I don't find her as strikingly beautiful as Jane Seymore, I don't think Elizabeth McGovern is such a bad choice. :) Luc
Enjoyed the book by Baroness Orczy, but the films dont quite come up to the book, but might give Richard. E. Grant's version another go as i love period drama and the BBC settings and costume are fantastic, but some of the actors and acting is poor as a whole.
I wonder how can Pimpernel pretended to be French? I assume if he had French babysitter or something like that his French would be with no accent. I read Victor Hugo who was obviously on the revolution side. Here Robespiere is mean cold blooded murderer. So do all Republicans.
In those day the majority of upper-class Englishmen would have spoken French. Also the Scarlet Pimpernel did not grow up in Engliand - so one can only assume her grew up in France. :)
Wrong Revolution. You are confusing the Revolution of 1848 against Louis Philippe and the Revolution of 1792. Victor Hugo wasn't even alive then. HE was born sixteen years later, I believe. He wrote about the Revolution of 1848 in Les Miserables. Which was much later.
According to Victor Hugo's writings in Les Miserables he deplored the bloodthirstiness of the latter part of the 90's revolution, actually.
Also in that time period French would have been a typical accomplishment of the English upper classes. For many years it was a sort of second language of the nobility. It's certainly not at all farfetched to expect that Percy would have been quite good at speaking it.
I lov this series, they went a couple of yrs and did another series too...anyways, plz continue to post cuz I can't find it anywhere & I really want 2 c it again TYBunches for posting :) :)

Elizabeth McGovern just doesn't have the sparkle necesary for the part of Margurite. I'm dissapointed.

She is an awful actor, observe the ball scenes. It's so obvious she's spitting out a memorized script it's ludacris.

Ooo I like this Percy, he's FEISTY!

I love how that duke in the ball scene he just chucks the drunk girl away.. Did anybody notice that? He literally just like shoves her away. hahaha
