@boibad12 From hitting the buttons. They're a hard plastic from what I remember and not the soft smushy rubber material found on later drum machines and samplers.
I'd like to get a drum machine that will do either or both of the following: 1. allow me to set a tempo and have it play along with my acoustic piano (like an Alesis SR-16, except better sounding); 2. allow me to layer a ride cymbal sound onto the bass sound in my Kurzweil keyboard. In other words, a "tone generator" for MIDIng to my Kurzweil. Will this machine do either of those 2 things, or does it just make sounds in response to a tapping finger?
I am the proud (first!) owner of a Roland R-70 Human Rhythm Composer. This is one of the best computers ever but still I can find no clip about it anywhere on YT. It can be that I am not searching with the right parameters but still very strange. Why is this machine so unknown with most musicians?
I got my R8 from a friend some time ago, and I just took the time to learn how to write songs step-by-step. Once you get the hang of it, it's really practical and you can actually make great drumtracks with this stone-age robot :)
The best drum machine, ive got a MKII at home, cost me $900!!!! The sounds are a bit "dated" but you can tweak them so much, and run it through some effects and a good parametric eq and you can come up with practically any drum sound.
Hahahaha... I wasn't trying to do any "ninja" style moves here. It was just a video to show that the pads worked and it powered up pretty much. =) Cheers!
great drum machine that you can do whole production on whithout anything else.since i sold my two r8s and 1 r5(one at a time) i dont finnish many tracks actually.
For some reason, the R8 had a significantly better midi performance using its pads than tapping a midi keyboard! I don't know why but it really did sound better using its pads and the subtle layering of the pad velocity structure by Roland made it the drum machine of choice at the time (1990 onwards). I still have the R8 which I bought in 1990 and it is still a very powerful drum programming tool. Be prepared to pay a pretty price for it in years to come :)
The R8 is amazing when you delve deep too. Recording all pitch and decay settings in realtime with the data slider make it totally unique. Ask Autechre :-)
I didn't run any patterns or beats because it was just a demo for selling on ebay... and i left it up in case other people needed to get an idea of the sounds that where available. check out "myspace dot com slash commodorecrush" for some real songs that I've made on Nanoloop, etc. Cheers!
P.S... yes it does sound like some annoying kid at Guitar Center. I wasn't trying to impress anyone.
Have you heard the C I R C U I T B E N T ROLAND R-8 from SPACE-CAT AUDIO TECHNOLOGIES?
It,s got to be a first, I cant find one on YOU TUBE ANYWHERE. They have said that it will be ready and up for sale in around a weeks time on ebay. Still worth watching their other videos of circuit bent machines.
That clicky sound in the video, those from you hitting the buttons and not from the samples, right?

oye unapregunta cual esmejor el r-5 oel roland r-8 oel roland mk2.hey which one it:s better ,the r-5 .the r-8 or the mk2
lacrimosany 2 years ago
Roland R8 es mejor que Roland R5, y Roland R8 MK II fue una versión mejorada de Roland R8 clásica. Actualmente creo que ambas están descontinuadas.

I love this machine!! Along with the Roland R-70 and Roland Tr 808 and Tr 909!

i love my r8 mkii.... it will never be sold!
basically, i just sample its sound in to my MPC..... the 808's & 909's are beautiful
actually, roger linn may have copied the design of the original r8 when he invented the MPC60... not sure which one came out first, though.

The least you could have did was showcased a rhythm with it instead of "fingering" it.

The pads sound louder than the actual sounds. Good Vid though.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
what's the point of it having pads when it's got MIDI? playing those flimsy pads looks amature.

Can this hook up to a laptop and be used with GarageBand?

Well, I believe you can hook up most anything to a computer as long as you have the correct inputs and connections.

I doubt it would work if you did, GarageBand wasn't designed like that.

The answer is yes. Hook the MIDI out of your DAW to the MIDI in of the R8 and you can control it from there.
