she did not even know the photo was as popular as it was until the photographer found her yrs later. Money from that photo was not of interest to her... she had no interest or desire to be an icon of sorts. I met this woman. I lived in Afghanistan for 15 years, my father worked for the UN there. She used to be at the Fruit Bazar all the time. She was about 12, my age then, when she married a European form Sweeden. It did not go well. He wanted to take her back to his country. The Afghan government prohibited her to leave the country with a foreinger. From what I recall he went back to Sweeden and last we knew she was back at the Bazar.

With all the money national geographic and Mccurry earn from this famous photograph hopefully they atleast gave a portion to Sharbat. I watched the documentary and was amazed that they actually found her still alive and even have a family with 3 kids considering how bad the situation back when that famous picture was taken. Her eyes is still as beautiful and haunting.
