Eh, fucking virtuoso in action. Priceless. Tom Jenkinson's the fucking daddy. Then he gets all latin at the end. LOL What a FUCKIKNG performer. Yeah, I don't have any other word to describe his "thing". FUCKING great. Yeah, I screamed it. I mean, what FUCKING planet are you on where this doesn't stimulate the senses. I'll FUCKING tell you somfin mate. This droog has his flams welted up, eh?
This is why I really like Tom's electronic stuff -- he's a musician first. All the scrappy bitwork stuff is based on formal training as a bassist and performer. RD James has neat songs, but there's a solidity and grounding in Tom's work that's obvious in his compositions.
Besides, who'd be cooler live? No comparison... Tom for the win.
I looked at a top (200) list of best bassists just to see if he was on it. He's -nowhere-. Makes you wonder how far-off the list is. No matter how subjective the matter is, you cannot deny this guy is AT least in the top 200, and in my opinion, he's up there with Claypool at first. Just fucking brilliant.

I think he's better at straight up electronic. This is like a decent high school bass player entertaining himself in front of the mirror. Sloppy, choppy, masturbatory. Yikes.
sick player, very creative songwriter even just playing these solo works. really interesting chord and melodic choices and cool rhythmic stuff all over the place. i love the dude. the way he approaches slapping is really similar to the way i do ( really advanced comping while keeping a bass line in there somewhere i suppose he he).
the song at 2.30 is stuning, he should bring out a download albumn of just solo bass music, dude any way you could upload more of this gig? and for the other people i think its a custom bass. not a rickenbacker lol
wow... Les Claypool huh? You obviously need to be schooled a little more in real music. Squarepusher is WAY more creative and original. He is in another stratosphere.
Yeah maybe you could say Squarepusher is more creative because he is playing in a less conventional way but someone "who is schooled in real music" may very well enjoy Les Claypool more since his playing -is- actually cleaner, which makes it even harder to compare.
cos you really can compare can't you? no, you can't. two different styles. have you heard of victor wooten? who would compare him to? marcus miller perhaps? or jaco pastorius? how about cass lewis? fuzzy haskins maybe? it's not about schooling, it's about good music. just enjoy it!
Claypool is very good but Jenkinson still goes a few better. I saw this show @ the other date in London and nothing in this video quite reflects the obscenity of some the playing Jenkinson was doing that night. I'm a proficient musician and I was pinching myself to make sure I wasn't imagining some of it, believe.
do you know what, they're all different. all these great bassists. they're all good, all in their own way. like what you like and listen to as much as possible. some of the people on here seem to think they know more than anyone else about music. as long as you like it, that's all that matters :)
Of course, ultimately it's personal taste but in a world where some people think the drummer from Blink 182 is better than Buddy Rich, we must see that some standards are upheld.
Sure sounds like it! At 1:46 I hear the beginning of The Beatles - Blackbird. Right after those first 3 chords the vid is cut though, so it might as well be just coincidence.
supposedly theres going to be a jenkinson/herbie hancock/brian eno collab album at some point (i know they were all jamming together a year or so ago, whether they recorded any of the sessions no one seems to know) which would be rather splendid (if it ever does come about)
mate you an absolute legend for putting this up, any chance you could post up some more bits from the gig? or are these the best bits. i could sit and watch this for hours, that castles made of sand bit at the end, just wow.

@jpprindle He really does know how to wank his bass off though, slaps it around like a piece of meat even >_>
Some of his bass stuff is really sweet though, when its not so self indulgent...
I wish he'd play Theme from Sprite live.

Les is great but that's comparing apples to oranges. Tom is just as creative and different to the norm but in a completely separate style.
