Being good for the sake of being good will still get you to the same place as those who are bad for the sake of being bad.

It comes down to obedience to the Lord after repentance. Having a close relationship with Him is possible. But its not just belief ; Its turning away from sin through prayer, and obeying His will. He will give you strength to over come after becoming a brand new person through the Savior; Jesus. You can be His friend and He laid down His life for His friends because of loving you. Its so great to have a friend always being with you. Don't die in your sins. There is hell to pay.
