Collicio/Herc showing the bad side of Policing and Mculty laughing at the incompetence and ignorance of the leadership 'Showing the next generation how NOT to do the Job' in the words of Colvin
Maybe breaking bad is a exceptional series but this is a very, very good series. For me, the fourth is the best season when you see the fight agaist bad and good. No only on drugs, in the political sistem too. The most complex scripst are here.
The montage for each season focuses on the specifics that happened in each season and tries to wrap them up. Yet in every montage there is a segment where it shows the corner boys standing on the corners and selling, same as it ever was. The point here is that no matter what happens in each season, the game is still the game and it moves on regardless, ain't nothing changed at the end of the day.
@SGB102288 Then the next question is why is he the greatest tragedy, i think the Sobotka story or Dukies metamorphosis is stories that is more touching than Bodie walking aroung in his area and looks like pippi longstocking (that bandana he has in S02/03).
This is clearly the greatest show ever created. Many of you on here are correct about the fact that if this show can't win an award of any sort then the people who give them out don't know shit about what they're looking at!!! My favorite season ending montage of the 5. The only way to truly appreciate this show is to watch every episode at least 7-8 times to see all the in depth detail of the writing. In a word it is simply genius!!! I also think this show doesn't take an episode off.
the best of all seasons in the series by far, anyone can say what they want but wire is not wire without avon and string and the whole barksdale organization....
I watched Season 3 all in one sitting so the story was fresh in my memory when everything wound down with this montage. As I watched it unfold, a wave of clarity rushed over me and the history of the human race flashed before my eyes.
The only reason The Sopranos is more popular than The Wire is that it's easier for less intelligent people to follow. It's sort of a "slower, special-needs cousin" of the Wire. But the Wire is orders of magnitude BETTER.
@SurferMan127 I have to respectfully disagree. I feel like the Sopranos delves further into the psychological processes of characters and the resulting consequences that arise. While the Wire has a bigger sociological focus as the core of its intention. Both series are top-notch in my opinion, with neither being better or worse. Just different. But I will agree, no show has both made me think as much AND changed my viewpoint on life more than the Wire. Now that's powerful.
I'm not sure if its the song that does it, but this is by far my favorite season ending montage to The Wire. Good lord, this is an un believable show. Best ever.
@napalman21 these decisions are far too difficult to make, no season is by far better or worse in my opinion but hamsterdam was an awesome concept. second season was really original the ending still gets to me
You know this show is the truth because there isn't one dislike on here yet. That shit speaks volumes to how good/read/amzing this show was and is when re-watched and evaluated.
Amazing television, displaying the war on drugs will never end. Despite all that has been done, all the problems, all the media, all the ups, downs, nothing changes; it's seldom. The look Herc gives in the police-car is profound; he sort of smiles, knowing that the institution he partakes him has done very little to stop the war on drugs. The music, Fast Train, gives it an emotional hit too... This is reality. This is pragmatic. This is not dramatic or polished up. Fucking amazing
I know I'm not the only one who finds the part with Avon looking back strangely the saddest part of this montage. Especially knowing that the fact that is he has no one left to support him was all because of his actions. And weirdly, it seems like the closest person (or at least the only person who will make eye contact) to Avon at this point is Marlo, his former enemy.
@yellabeanblackfish Amazing I thought the same thing. For once he just comes off as hopeless, and its so ironic that Marlo, the most inhumane character on the show, is the one person who will acknowledge him. One of the greatest little scenes in tv history.
@premier46 Yes. Marlo had a classical warrior mentality, and would come to pay his respects to a vanguished enemy, in a symbolic gesture that showed he was taking over.
@yellabeanblackfish Yeah it was hard to not feel bad for Avon. His whole empire had crumpled, he and String sold each other out and Marlo took his spot. Interesting how Marlo came to almost show his respect for Avon.
Sad to see String go out like that, The Fall of the Barksdale Empire and the Rise of The Stanfield Empire, Best show to ever grace our TV Sets people.
After Avon says "Marlo", and Marlo nods for indication, he becomes disappointed - that his era' is over. Game stays the same, but people move on - for better or worse.
@lubui2583 Nah man, he's looking for his sister, but she won't look at him, or even stick around to find out what happens to him, because of what he did to her boy D. He knows he has no-one left, and when Marlo steps in, he realises it's all over.
@lubui2583 true. all of the above. his sister not looking at him or sticking around, and stringer not being there. but yea that expression on his face says it all.
I dare anyone to say that they can't relate to any one of these characters. Sure, The Wire is set in Baltimore, but in the end, all these people are universal. This shit is happening all over the world. Fucking genius.
this is too good to be watched damnit..its so sad because i know ,now i only have 2 seasons more to watch till the end...damnit what shall i watch after that?!!!?.no more the wire(im from europa wo got it later)
I love and hate this show. I love it because it is the best and most consistent show ever created. I hate it because I cannot watch anything else without comparing it to this.
I know this may sound stupid, but I thnk the most tragic thing about season 3's ending was seeing bodie alone on the street.. A soldier without a country.
Written by Van Morrison and sung by the late, great, Solomon Burke. As always, brilliant music to go with undeniably one of the best shows television has ever seen.
oh and there is Anthony Gray on his rally saying something like "to the false promise that the schools are providiing future for our children" - clearly a nod to the topic of 4th season
I disagree, when have Bush (both of them) met Saddam? Or Hitler met Stalin? The people who start wars are alway away from the battlefied. Avon and Marlo are no different.
Right at the beginning is a great little scene were Fruit is intimidated by Cutty (because he almost shot him while he was working for Avon) and Justin interprets this as Cutty being such a tough guy that not even drug dealers will mess with him, which encourages him to keep going to the gym and learn from him. Just another reason to love The Wire.
god i love how layered the wire is. it didn't even hit me that carver's respect for cutty and his thing about getting the young drug slingers into sports would of cause set up carver's story with randy in the 4th season and his general consideration for the kids. The wire is TV gold, flawless.
Sobotka's fate was for me one of the biggest tragedies in The Wire. I loved this ending. It has more effect because The Wire only used source music except for a couple of season endings. It kind of gives it a bigger effect. Perfect song choice.
I also liked when Avon saw Marlo at the end. I think that was the first time he'd seen him at all.
I think Avon shows his leadership best in season 3.
He stops Stringer from using Slim to kill Clay Davis.
He tries to compromise with Brother over Stringer, saying it's business, until Brother says 'Business is where you are now, but what got you here is your word and your reputation,'
Then he has to do what he has to do, maintaining his leadership and integrity.
as a biochemistry and molecular biologist with a background in nutrition I am fascinated at the accurate portrayl of the poor diets these inner city kids consume.
i mean look at those youngins on the corner all eating chips, every single one of em eats a bag of chips as a subtantial meal.
to a T this show brings the harshest and most beautiful aspects of realism and grit to the screen.
I think it was just something detectives did in homicide division to anyone caught sleeping on the job. They then pinned the tie end to the wall as a trophy, just for a laugh.
Yeah, that's what makes this show so good, all the small details that they put in it. Like the board with ties just keep getting bigger each season, or all the background noises which actually contains loads of information :) Best show ever, no question about it.
david simon said it was just a gag that detectives in the BPD Homicide unit always used to pull on each other...you fall asleep at your desk, your tie gets cut...if you remember in an earlier episode bunk cuts crutchfields tie
I don't know if any show will ever touch the depth of The Wire. The amount of intertwining storylines and character interactions is unparalleled. The message: it never ends.
The show itself was total genius. To stray away from the main plot in season one into two, then bring it back around was amazing. Season Four was outstanding and the final season tied up everything so well.
Season three is my favorite though, by far. I could watch those episodes every day for a year.
why do you have to discuss which season was best? The show was excellent from beginning to end, no season was better than the others. I see it as one incredible series, not a bunch of good seasons. Without season 2 the rest would mean shit, and thats what makes this show so good, all the seasons are equally good and important to the overall story.
@sukamidryhe right, if you see each season differently, then you don't finish this book, you only finish some of its chapters.
show like this requires you to be serious, not to be entertained the kind that you can leave and come back to it at anytime then it's still the same. it's not 'friends' or 'sex and the city,'
3:14
McNulty becoming the kind of Police the Community leaders were asking for earlier in the series, another nice little touch.
2:24
Herc's look of indifference is marvellous, he knows he can't do anything.Maybe that was partially what made him go to Levy in the end

He didn't make a fuss even when String ordered the killing of his own kin, D. He understands the game.
But String goes to far with his greed, so he has 'a crisis of leadership,'

Not to mention giving Cutty 15 grands for free in the name of charity.

Strange to see Frank Sobotka's picture on a poster when Omar was disposing of the guns.
All the pieces matter.

I don't know if any show will ever touch the depth of The Wire. The amount of intertwining storylines and character interactions is unparalleled. The message: it never ends.

amazing show:)

The show itself was total genius. To stray away from the main plot in season one into two, then bring it back around was amazing. Season Four was outstanding and the final season tied up everything so well.
Season three is my favorite though, by far. I could watch those episodes every day for a year.

I didnt think season 4 was outstanding. Good, but didn't hit me like 2 and 3 did.

@Greeneyez2475 i think 2 was the worst. it still great but i think season 3 was the best, than season 1, than 4, than 2

why do you have to discuss which season was best? The show was excellent from beginning to end, no season was better than the others. I see it as one incredible series, not a bunch of good seasons. Without season 2 the rest would mean shit, and thats what makes this show so good, all the seasons are equally good and important to the overall story.

@sukamidryhe right, if you see each season differently, then you don't finish this book, you only finish some of its chapters.
show like this requires you to be serious, not to be entertained the kind that you can leave and come back to it at anytime then it's still the same. it's not 'friends' or 'sex and the city,'
