I think a lot of singers can hold this note. Its actually, only supposed to be touched as per Puccini, and some hold it a few beats. I don't like it held to short or to long. There is a point where it seems "just right" and this was way to long in my opinion.
Some voice coach ought to clue him in - the words are, "nessun dorma", NOT nessun-a dor-a-ma!!!!! Was it me, or was the last note wavering between pitches???
As a Pavarotti purest I applaud you. You take risks. That is truly living la vida. Mi piace your interpretation of such a beautiful work of art para cantar.
ok, so I am an operatic tenor, and I always have bad things to say about everyones video. but...daaaaaaamn. that is for real too. 27 seconds high bnatural to a natural. Inhuman man, just freaking insane lol
I like it!! I like it very much!! It is differente but for certain is beatifull... it is definetely a pitty that the orchestra did not wait for him to finish... he has all the right on thi splanet to how what he is made of and definetely there is plenty of talent in there!!!
It's probably not a trick but it is very inappropriate to hold that note for so long. It's good that you can do it but people won't find it impressive when you're not supposed to do it. People will just think you're trying to show off. Eventually, the vibrato just makes it drag and it gets annoying and eventually, it just comes across as arrogance.
@tomcane8 I'm sorry but Opera singers have been doing this for a loooong time in performances. Look up Ponselle and how the conductors would wait till she was done. Opera is a means of vocal expression that no other forms of music can imitate or surpass (if the singer knows what they are doing) In performance you're supposed to show what you are made off. Personally I think that the orchestra should have just waited till he was done holding it. It would have had a MUCH better effect
Not being of the high-brow culture, just let me say WOW !!!! The long Vinvero at the end, people may not like it, but just imagine the vocal strength to sustain the note that long. I thought Pavarotti held Vincero the best, now this! And he is one of us, an American. We, do at times, produce good musicians. However, Maestro Pavarotti sure had the stage presence. Everyone, pleaase, just enjoy the music of all of these magnificent singers no matter who you prefer..
um, ok, where's the rest of it? the sound was good but it's kind of like eating a sandwich with nothing between the slices of bread. The bread was tasty, now where's the meat?
Joyful, easy, solid technique and obvious delight in a god-given gift. A celebration is what it was - don't let 'em rain on your parade. You are a delight! Thanks for the gusto!
Mark... you have the talent. Maybe the the times are different now, with all the media, Internet, Radio Stations etc etc etc...You know, people will always complain no matter what you do... People nowadays still critizise Pavarotti...and end of the story... I wish I have the chance to see you perform live... seriously
Thanks Charly, You're very kind. Everyone has an opinion. I sing the way I sing. People like it or not. That's their choice. I respect their right to express themselves, but I respectfully choose to disagree, if I feel they are being unjust. This video has gotten a tremendous amount of criticism, because of the last phrase. If you do somthing like that, you have to be prepared to take the negative with the positive.
I am sorry to disagree with all of you but he really offended me on not following what puccini asked for in the score especially at the end of the aria.
GO whereever u want to...You have the talent that those who critize you don have in million of years....Go..Go..and sing all you want to...there is always a person who's going to love you.
Thank you very much. As you can read from some of these other comments, people can get really upset about this performance. I have been singing since I am 4 years old and I am singing better than ever with my nearly 46 years. Glad you enjoyed it! Mark
For all those who think that the long note at the end of this video is a studio trick -- and there are a lot of you. Type -- Opera Mark Janicello -- in the YouTube Search. You will come to a live performance video of the end of this aria from June 21, 2008. There you will see, that I do this live all the time, all over Europe. Regards, Mark Janicello
-this is what it sounds like when a tenor got his feet squashed by a 200 pound gorilla, got recorded, and then the scratched record keot going and going.
An one for pity:
-One of the most artistic shrieks in music history.
who's janicello? and as i told i'm not italian so it's normal that i don't know the right spell, AND if you listen the nessun dorma of the best tenor of all time Jussi Bjorling (according a census of thousands of musicians around the world, but i still think pavarotti is the best) it's wide diferent to pavarotti's (his is a lot better, and he is in the 18th position of that list) so guess what? he was ITALIAN. Finally, nobody is asking for information.
3: Pavarotti and bjorling's voice are NOT meant for Nessun dorma, they're lyric tenors, Nessun Dorma is made for Dramatic (like Franco Corelli, Franco Bonisolli, Mario Del Monaco.) etc.
4: I really don't think you should judge an aria, especially if you can't spell the name.
I personally believe Corelli does the best job for this particular aria... The forwardness of his voice is somthing that is unattainable by any other tenor to date.
And if you are looking for a Lyric Tenor... Fritz Wunderlich was possibly the greatest Lyric tenor in the last Century... perhaps farther back. Before you blindly pronounce Pavarotti's greatness, Study up on your lyric tenors :)
Is this referring to me? If so, you're doing a terrible job at being an opera snob, considering I said nothing to praise Pavarotti, nor do I like him.
I was not referring specifically to you... Just commenting on the video, though I thank you for making the Distinction between Lyric and Dramatic Tenors... Many people miss that.
Wow. You are obviously a professional. Why feel you have to prove yourself or even defend?
I think I like Paul Pot's version better and the reason why is because he seemed like a normal guy and looked awkward. You wouldn't expect that from him. When he sang, it surprised me and nearly brought me to tears.
Nice job though. Your live version is also good.
I bet you were the Phantom at one point or another.
Whatever might be said of this performance, certainly the word boring does not come easily to mind, although the phrase "too much of a good thing" might suggest itself. The remark in the introduction 'About This Video', concerning the singer's having made the aria infamous in its lengthy final phrase, perhaps signals that the singer's intention was to cause a sensation and even some controversy. To that extent the performance seems to have achieved a striking success,
I can only think that the negative comments come from people who don't sing, ie. those who have never felt the sensation of holding a well placed high note. This tenor is certainly NOT boring. I enjoyed his singing.
I do agree with Ponsellelover. This is not about "who holds a note for the longest duration" contest. It's opera for heaven's sake. His vibrato is annoying. I am sorry but true. This is a rather poor rendition of this nocturne!
Dear Inquisitive and Co, Thank you all for your comments. When one holds a note as long as I do in this aria, it is to cause a effect. One can never expect all reactions to be positive. That some of you find my singing "annoying", "terrible" and "horrible" only proves to me that I must be doing something right. If you had no opinion about what I was doing, then I would be a really boring singer. It lets me know that I have somehow touched you with my singing. Best regards, Mark Janicello
Well, Mark, I am a singer and I think that you have done a marvelous thing here. The people who are carping about your performance remind me of wine tasters, or, perhaps, those who spend thousands of dollars for AC line cords for their sound systems -- lots of jargon, little knowledge and skill. I would like to see you "live" someday soon.
Thank you for sharing your gift; it is truly from God.
Hello Ed, Thanks for your comments. I am currently in negotiations to do my first US Tour (in a very long time). If things work out as planned, I will certainly post it here. Regards, Mark
Pavarotti's prodigy American tenor Stephen J Miller is said to be still so spiritually in pain he vowed not to sing until 2008, his Nessun Dorma tribute which is free to hear is at "numberonemusicDOTcomSLASHpavarottiprodigy"
According to the press Miller intends to tour again with tenor Ignacio Gomez his friend from Chile 2008.
God bless maestro Miller and Luciano Pavarotti's family during this very hard time.
This said, you have an appealing voice which I found pity you used more for exhibition than for singing. Your voice would have been of no interest to me, I never would have posted and been so severe.
Your voice has the dark qualities of a heldentenor, but your voice feels much more lyrical (I could be wrong about that though). Have you ever sung Wagner?
what a privilege laravaen0,you worked w/ Krauss & Corelli? These are 2 of my favorites!I'm hoping to post soon & find out if I am a tenor,if so what kind, because some have even said I am Baritone( I doubt.)thx for posting!very intelligent!
Hi CureFan, I am on tour in the moment and will return to my offices in a few days. Please let me know when you post your video. I have often been told that I am a baritone as well. But Baritones don't sing High "Cs" Regards, Mark Janicello
You have baritones who sing really high but what you "are" depends on where your "sounds the best". You might be able to go as high as a soprano but if your color and resonnance sounds best in the baritone range, then you are a baritone.
I feel stupid who is Mario del Monaco? PAVAROTTI, is and always will be the VOICE, I hear when I hear this particular aria. I don't know, maybe it's the way the music and his voice intertwines it's just exquisite.
His voice is wonderful! but the Last note was wayyyyyy
to long. There is no need for that kind of length for that last note. But other than that it was wonderful. So far the only person that i have heard so far that i don't prefer for Nessun Dorma, Jose Carreras.:(
Overall "What can one say but, 'Salieri'"... wow. I had to listen to it twice to take in all that's bad about this - the only performance of Nessun Dorma where Pablo Potts could give direction. The libretto was muddled and completely unintelligible; note duration & pitch ignored for some reason and the last 'Vincero' I almost can't comment on w/o making this guy cry. I think that skill would be best suited for free diving than opera. Perhaps a career change?
omg that note at the end reminded me of those pipes you get, the ones you whirl around your head and they make this ANNOYING noise!!!!!! That was horrible, no emotion whatsoever! Paul Potts voice may not be as technically accurate as some, but his emotional and feeling he puts into what he sings more than makes up for that. In my opinion, Paul Potts sings this the best.
People ain't being upset. We're just pointing out it sucks.
Your voice is meant to work with the music, not against it. Holding that note just makes it sound like you're competing with the instruments instead of making music with them.
I have to say that I find it quite amusing how upset people get with me because I held a note. I'm not destroying world peace here, folks. Don't take it so seriously. I held the note, just for fun. I say, if you are going to be a pig, then be a BIG PIG.
I just listened again, you know, cos sometimes something is so bad you need a second viewing..
I worked out what you sound like on that end note - like a UFO in Close Encounters of the Third Kind !!! Its a horrible note, it may be long but you demonstrate no control over it!!! Infamous? I doubt it
im no expert at all, just like to listen to music, and i didnt like that last note as well, it sounds like he's overdoing it, too much vibrato (?) to keep his voice going, also listened to pavarotti's verzion and liked it much more; much shorter, but way more powerful, just look at his facial expression, like he's totally overwhelmed
I can't understand why he made a fermata on a c note, it's rubish, harmony goes on and he should keep b flat. If I'm wrong about the tune forgive me but I'm not a tenor. And there is a manner of (I don't know how to call it in english) making glissando on almost every note it's not good. On the other hand very good voice and what a pity he do not make a good work on it.
I studied with Franco Corelli and I sang with alfredo Kraus in Zurich in 1994. By the way, you have only heard a very short part of this aria for the video. The whole Aria is on my CD Classics. Glad you liked Elvis and the poems.
I am not a singer either and I never compared my voice with your voice or my version of NESSUN DORMA against yours, like yuo pronounced and ask for.I learned a little about OPERA listening to who, many experts considered to be the PERFECT operatic voice of the past century JUSSI JOERLING or THE masterclasses of ALFREDO KRAUSS pure technique, perfect vocal emission , breathing , legato and pronounciation, PAVAROTTI also great and CORELLI as well.
MARK thanks for your REPLY. I never said "NERVOUS", => but JUST lacking a sense of a <WHOLE INTERPRETATION>, instead compensated with the last LONG note and in doing so, there is a noticeable "break" in your voice, not exactly bad LEGATO, but trembling wich I know by experince is not good for a long lasting healthy singing . The COMPASS, gamut of tones that your voice can cover ,is an essential element all time, not to overpass your own RANGE:exageration is not good .
SORRY but you are confused, singin this area made you so worried about the last
"note", that you didn't focus at all in good performing , your highs are pretty bad and your voice is already quivering, trembling ==> VIBRATO, VARIATIONS IN PITCH --> Forcing the voice, sacrficing clarity and good pronounciation as well, NESSUN DORMA is much more than one single final note. Try again , you may improve and be conscientious that FORCING is not healthy for your small VOICE.
Since I sing this aria live all over the world, I simply didn't think I was nervous about the last note. I would be very curious to hear your version of this aria. Obviously, you have much more experience than I do, having only spent the last 40 years of my life as a professional performer. By the way, my small voice was hired to sing Siegmund in the Tiroler Festspiels Production of "Die Walküre" this summer.
This is Mark Janicello (laraven). Mr. Potts is a talented amateur with an acceptable voice. I personally do not believe that he has the vocal material for a professional career as an opera singer. In my opinion, no one has a more beautiful voice than Pavarotti. He was never a great operatic actor like Domingo, but when he sings, it is as if an angel came down and kissed his throat.
I have also worked with Alfredo Kraus and Franco Corelli as well as Bonisolli and quite a few other tenors that you might not know. I also studied intently the singing of Jussi Bjoerling, Caruso and Fritz Wunderlich. I have worked with the Big "P" once and heard Pavarotti live many, many times. No one, not Mario Lanza, Domingo, Corelli, Del Monaco, di Stefano, not even to think of Paul Potts or Andrea Bocelli, can approach the level of beauty of his singing in his prime.
well for me its hard to compare lyric tenor with spinto or liggero tenors around the world... i think pavarotti Today has the best voice to sing nessun dorma! but i dont personatly believe hes the best tenor with the best vocal "abilities" maybe? but hey its only my opinion i just wouldnt compare differenttypes of tenors!
Hello Luixander, What does "the best" mean, exactly. Every voice type has its plusses and minuses. There is room in Music for every type of voice. Factually, in terms of pure musical expression, some of the best singers of our century had voices that were not "beautiful" in common aesthetic terms. Callas never sang as beautifully as Mirella Freni, but who would you rather watch onstage? Billie Holliday had a very unusual voice, but she was a RIVETING singer.
you're right my friend... hey i need your opinion with this non operatic tenor here.. check it out and send me a private message...heres the link >>> watch?v=A2Gk53xV1Ro
But for this particular aria and role, do you prefer Pavarotti over the dramatic tenors like Corelli and del Monaco? Pavarotti had a rather beautiful voice, but a lyric one, and this aria is pretty heavy.
Hello Erialm, I am only speaking of the aria, not the entire role. Pavarotti´s voice is so perfectly placed and produced that he cuts through about any orchestration -- perhaps with the exception of Wagner. For Wagner, his voice sits too "high".
The last not is real, but the orchestra didn't wait the singer finish the high B. Is this a playback music and the singer put the voice later? It's cool, anyway, congratulations.
The last note is real... but I think this song should be retired with pavarotti and the three tenors. Noone will ever do it even close to as wonderful as them
I think a lot of singers can hold this note. Its actually, only supposed to be touched as per Puccini, and some hold it a few beats. I don't like it held to short or to long. There is a point where it seems "just right" and this was way to long in my opinion.

This good looking fellow yearns so much to impress, that he force his voice over the edge of its capability.
This "forcing" makes him sometimes not clean, not in right position of the tone (false).
It also diminish the brightness of the tone, make the surface a little bit matte and creates a vibrato.
That is sad because he has a beautiful timbre, reminiscent of Monaco's .

I do agree with Ponsellelover. This is not about "who holds a note for the longest duration" contest. It's opera for heaven's sake. His vibrato is annoying. I am sorry but true. This is a rather poor rendition of this nocturne!
TheInquisitive 4 years ago
Dear Inquisitive and Co, Thank you all for your comments. When one holds a note as long as I do in this aria, it is to cause a effect. One can never expect all reactions to be positive. That some of you find my singing "annoying", "terrible" and "horrible" only proves to me that I must be doing something right. If you had no opinion about what I was doing, then I would be a really boring singer. It lets me know that I have somehow touched you with my singing. Best regards, Mark Janicello

He holds the last note longer than anyone. Beautiful.

That's a lotta screaming of sorts...go watch Maestros Pavarotti, Corelli, Bjorling, and such to see how Nessun Dorma should be sung.

I thing he is a verry great Tenor, his highist "C" ist beatifull.
I feeel and hesr some diffenrenes. The voice is more hart then Pavarotti, not so smooth,at last the voice wa not so emotional!
It is only my Emotion by hearing this ,but i i can not lie wen i thing Pavaratotti is/was the best Tenor i heart!

If singing were just a funfair prowess or show, well, OK, but it's much more than holding a high B in contempt of music with a horrible vibrato.

This said, you have an appealing voice which I found pity you used more for exhibition than for singing. Your voice would have been of no interest to me, I never would have posted and been so severe.
PonselleLover 4 years ago
Your voice has the dark qualities of a heldentenor, but your voice feels much more lyrical (I could be wrong about that though). Have you ever sung Wagner?

thecurefan1 4 years ago
Hi CureFan, I am on tour in the moment and will return to my offices in a few days. Please let me know when you post your video. I have often been told that I am a baritone as well. But Baritones don't sing High "Cs" Regards, Mark Janicello
laraven0 4 years ago
You have baritones who sing really high but what you "are" depends on where your "sounds the best". You might be able to go as high as a soprano but if your color and resonnance sounds best in the baritone range, then you are a baritone.

What is this singer doing? Nessun Dorma??? Italian opera??
bastianinisfan 4 years ago
RaWyTrEjO 4 years ago
I feel stupid who is Mario del Monaco? PAVAROTTI, is and always will be the VOICE, I hear when I hear this particular aria. I don't know, maybe it's the way the music and his voice intertwines it's just exquisite.
octavegirl 4 years ago
His voice is wonderful! but the Last note was wayyyyyy
to long. There is no need for that kind of length for that last note. But other than that it was wonderful. So far the only person that i have heard so far that i don't prefer for Nessun Dorma, Jose Carreras.:(
octavegirl 4 years ago
Should have stopped at 17 seconds. That sounded like a broken casio keyboard towards the end...

Beautiful singer no doubt, last note held, but sadly not there for me.
rostovondon46 4 years ago
Overall "What can one say but, 'Salieri'"... wow. I had to listen to it twice to take in all that's bad about this - the only performance of Nessun Dorma where Pablo Potts could give direction. The libretto was muddled and completely unintelligible; note duration & pitch ignored for some reason and the last 'Vincero' I almost can't comment on w/o making this guy cry. I think that skill would be best suited for free diving than opera. Perhaps a career change?

I bet you had wee'd yourself by the end of that note. No you probably had an orgasm because you love yourself so much?

omg that note at the end reminded me of those pipes you get, the ones you whirl around your head and they make this ANNOYING noise!!!!!! That was horrible, no emotion whatsoever! Paul Potts voice may not be as technically accurate as some, but his emotional and feeling he puts into what he sings more than makes up for that. In my opinion, Paul Potts sings this the best.
icklerob 4 years ago
Wrong mate, Potts doesn't even comes close to Mario del Monaco. And one thing though, you forgot to mention Pavarotti.
Alchael 4 years ago
People ain't being upset. We're just pointing out it sucks.
Your voice is meant to work with the music, not against it. Holding that note just makes it sound like you're competing with the instruments instead of making music with them.

Interpretation is an artist's absolute right. Just don't delve into popular music so much that you lose that classical deftness.

I just listened again, you know, cos sometimes something is so bad you need a second viewing..

im no expert at all, just like to listen to music, and i didnt like that last note as well, it sounds like he's overdoing it, too much vibrato (?) to keep his voice going, also listened to pavarotti's verzion and liked it much more; much shorter, but way more powerful, just look at his facial expression, like he's totally overwhelmed

Dude....that rocked :D
kaisergeist22 4 years ago
I can't understand why he made a fermata on a c note, it's rubish, harmony goes on and he should keep b flat. If I'm wrong about the tune forgive me but I'm not a tenor. And there is a manner of (I don't know how to call it in english) making glissando on almost every note it's not good. On the other hand very good voice and what a pity he do not make a good work on it.
miloszko 4 years ago
I agree fully. There's nothing about that held C-note that sounds right.

I studied with Franco Corelli and I sang with alfredo Kraus in Zurich in 1994. By the way, you have only heard a very short part of this aria for the video. The whole Aria is on my CD Classics. Glad you liked Elvis and the poems.
laraven0 5 years ago
I am not a singer either and I never compared my voice with your voice or my version of NESSUN DORMA against yours, like yuo pronounced and ask for.I learned a little about OPERA listening to who, many experts considered to be the PERFECT operatic voice of the past century JUSSI JOERLING or THE masterclasses of ALFREDO KRAUSS pure technique, perfect vocal emission , breathing , legato and pronounciation, PAVAROTTI also great and CORELLI as well.
LucianoKraCore 5 years ago
MARK thanks for your REPLY. I never said "NERVOUS", => but JUST lacking a sense of a <WHOLE INTERPRETATION>, instead compensated with the last LONG note and in doing so, there is a noticeable "break" in your voice, not exactly bad LEGATO, but trembling wich I know by experince is not good for a long lasting healthy singing . The COMPASS, gamut of tones that your voice can cover ,is an essential element all time, not to overpass your own RANGE:exageration is not good .
LucianoKraCore 5 years ago
SORRY but you are confused, singin this area made you so worried about the last
"note", that you didn't focus at all in good performing , your highs are pretty bad and your voice is already quivering, trembling ==> VIBRATO, VARIATIONS IN PITCH --> Forcing the voice, sacrficing clarity and good pronounciation as well, NESSUN DORMA is much more than one single final note. Try again , you may improve and be conscientious that FORCING is not healthy for your small VOICE.
LucianoKraCore 5 years ago
Since I sing this aria live all over the world, I simply didn't think I was nervous about the last note. I would be very curious to hear your version of this aria. Obviously, you have much more experience than I do, having only spent the last 40 years of my life as a professional performer. By the way, my small voice was hired to sing Siegmund in the Tiroler Festspiels Production of "Die Walküre" this summer.
laraven0 5 years ago
laraven i need a professional opinion about Paul Potts... ppl are just going crazy about it saying he sang it the best
luixander19 4 years ago
This is Mark Janicello (laraven). Mr. Potts is a talented amateur with an acceptable voice. I personally do not believe that he has the vocal material for a professional career as an opera singer. In my opinion, no one has a more beautiful voice than Pavarotti. He was never a great operatic actor like Domingo, but when he sings, it is as if an angel came down and kissed his throat.
laraven0 4 years ago
I have also worked with Alfredo Kraus and Franco Corelli as well as Bonisolli and quite a few other tenors that you might not know. I also studied intently the singing of Jussi Bjoerling, Caruso and Fritz Wunderlich. I have worked with the Big "P" once and heard Pavarotti live many, many times. No one, not Mario Lanza, Domingo, Corelli, Del Monaco, di Stefano, not even to think of Paul Potts or Andrea Bocelli, can approach the level of beauty of his singing in his prime.
laraven0 4 years ago
well for me its hard to compare lyric tenor with spinto or liggero tenors around the world... i think pavarotti Today has the best voice to sing nessun dorma! but i dont personatly believe hes the best tenor with the best vocal "abilities" maybe? but hey its only my opinion i just wouldnt compare differenttypes of tenors!
luixander19 4 years ago
Hello Luixander, What does "the best" mean, exactly. Every voice type has its plusses and minuses. There is room in Music for every type of voice. Factually, in terms of pure musical expression, some of the best singers of our century had voices that were not "beautiful" in common aesthetic terms. Callas never sang as beautifully as Mirella Freni, but who would you rather watch onstage? Billie Holliday had a very unusual voice, but she was a RIVETING singer.
laraven0 4 years ago
you're right my friend... hey i need your opinion with this non operatic tenor here.. check it out and send me a private message...heres the link >>> watch?v=A2Gk53xV1Ro
luixander19 4 years ago
But for this particular aria and role, do you prefer Pavarotti over the dramatic tenors like Corelli and del Monaco? Pavarotti had a rather beautiful voice, but a lyric one, and this aria is pretty heavy.
erialm 4 years ago
Hello Erialm, I am only speaking of the aria, not the entire role. Pavarotti´s voice is so perfectly placed and produced that he cuts through about any orchestration -- perhaps with the exception of Wagner. For Wagner, his voice sits too "high".
laraven0 4 years ago
Even if it was real, I didn't like the last note.
BondoBondoBondo 5 years ago
The last not is real, but the orchestra didn't wait the singer finish the high B. Is this a playback music and the singer put the voice later? It's cool, anyway, congratulations.
