so how do you fix this... my 98 528i (e39) makes a sound like this when in neutral or just stopped but more of a chirp at idle and ive been to several mechanics and they all told me different things like the vacuum seal or power steering pump or alternator.. i replaced the tensioner pulley but the chirping is still the same... someone help me out please
@XionUnjust its a loud chirp at idle, it doesnt really sound like this... i have a feeling it is the water pump... its coming from right around the alternator
If you own a BMW and have not followed the manufactures service plan for engine sludge cleaning the engines tend to loose power and idle irradicly. BMW is infamous for an intolerance to sludge builup
So if the car is making this sound I should replace the idler and tensioner pulleys?
CrashBandikoot7 5 months ago
@CrashBandikoot7 You have to take the belts off and spin each pulley to see which one it is.

@XionUnjust Can an alternator be making these kind of sounds too?
CrashBandikoot7 5 months ago
@CrashBandikoot7 Possible, but I rarely hear of it.

@thorfoxxx Replaced the idler pulley. It costs around $15-20 for my car. Easy DIY

Could it be the DISA adjuster valve?
SM3GTASTIC 2 years ago
No, the DISA would make a rattle sound and it is not close to where the sound was coming from. It ended up being the idler pulley.
XionUnjust 2 years ago
Is it that knocking sound? Cause mine is making a similar noise. Suspected pulley, going in on wednesday.
