I am only 22, just found out I have FVL and am on warfarin for life due to prior clots... my mom hasn't been tested yet but suffered miscarriages and preeclampsia... and so I am worried about what this means for me in the future in terms of starting a family. My boyfriend and I talked about not having kids at all. But it is so very inspirational to see all of these strong women and their families. Thanks for this video & helping raise awareness.
I'm 48 this year and was diagnosed with HOMOGENEOUS FACTOR V LEIDENS DESEASE . This was diagosed by the Mayo Clinic in Mn. I'M a male , the youngest of six and the only one to have this mutation . Both my parents had different vascular problems , perhaps nothing to uncommon .My dad died at age 54 , my mother is still living , how ever she suffers with deep vein thrombosis still . I was on lovanox , coumadin used together , now i'm only on coumadin , ulternating doses of 10@15 mg. every day .
Factor V Leiden mutation (named after the Dutch university where it was discovered) is a point mutation in the gene for clotting factor V.1
It has autosomal dominant inheritance and is the most common cause of inherited thrombophilia.
It leads to a hypercoagulable state. Heterozygous factor V Leiden (FVL) mutation and the G20210A mutation in the prothrombin gene are the most frequent clotting abnormalities associated with venous thromboembolism (VTE).2 The two mutations may coexist.
I was on Yasmin and had a clot in my thigh last year. This year I was told I have Factor V Leiden. Kind of worried about miscarriages and what-not now, but since I came through fine while I was a foetus, I guess my kids have a good chance too :D
I have had a total of 3 M/C without knowing what was wrong with me. After talking to a few people and researching on the internet I started taking baby asprin as soon as I started my first cycle after the last D&C. Went to see my OB @ 11 weeks even though he told me that I should see a genetic conselor after the last m/c. Baby was looking good. Told him my mothers past and that my grandfather had thick blood. Started taking 60mg of lovenox injections 1x daily. I am proud to say I am 34 weeks!
Hi everyone, I had a scan 10 days ago and it showed that my baby died several weeks before the scan. Two days later, I had a D&C. That was my first pregnancy. I did a lot of research about the causes of miscarriages. I came across an article about a woman who had 6 miscarriages due to a hypercoagulation disorder. She noticed that she had some difficulties in giving blood. The blood coagulated inside the needle. Have you had that problem before? Ican't give too much blood as it coagulates.
Thank you!!! I am a young woman who almot died 3 years ago in my mid 20s from a pulmonary emboilism....Due to medical care and education I should be able to carry my babies to term...I cannot WAIT to be a mommy!!!
I have had 3 misscarriages in the past 4 years two of which being this year never made it past 6 weeks. I started taking baby asprin after my last misscarriage in June. I can say that next tuesday I will be 13 weeks along. I was switched over to 1 lovenox injection daily at 10 weeks. There deff needs to be more awareness to clotting disorders during pregnancy in general.
I have Factor V, which was only discovered after the death of my son's twin at 27w5d. For weeks we watched as the blood flow through the cord got worse and worse. After I delivered we did an autopsy and found that my son's cord and placenta were totally thrombosed. They checked me and found that I have Factor V. I am angry because I even asked my Dr about clotting disorders but he did not test me until after my son had died. I have one wonderful, 20 month old son, but I should have 2. :(
@MsCanadianWildflower I totally agree with you. I would be very angry too. I lost a child recently. It was my first pregnancy. After sleepless nights of research, I found out about hypercoagulation disorders. I have an appointment with my doctor in 2 weeks. I will ask him to test me this spring. I had surgery recently and I would rather wait a little bit. I will have a blood test done. If it comes out negative, at least I will know it was something else. But, I will not risk another child.

I have FVL and APLS. I lost 5 babies. 2- 2nd trimester. My dr. of 7 years never tested me. I am now 30 wk preg. with a son thanks to my new dr. who took one look at my history and tested me. I do have 3 children, but have been pregnant a lot of times. I never heard of these disorders until this preg. I take 2 Heparin injections a day and one baby aspirin and even though before this disagnosis, I lost a twin at 7 weeks..ever since my meds started, all is perfect. Dont be afraid to ask 4 this test
I am 25 and have FVL. It runs in my family, but we were not aware of it until after the birth of my son. I developed clots in my leg and was put on warfrin for life. I am now curently 10 weeks pregnant with my second one, and I am taking fragmin injections daily. I have three wonderful doctors looking after me, and feel confident that things will go smooth. So glad to have found this video. Thanx for posting!
I am also a factor V Leiden woman. I had a miscarriage at 12 weeks, Dec 2008. 3 months later, I was pregnant again, and now have a beautiful, healthy son.
I had to give myself injections of lovenox during pregnancy and had a son with little complication. My concern is the recent FDA recall on bloodthinners! My son is strong boy but has a HX of repeated incidents of "allergy" like symptoms and very prone to being sick. He has already has surgery at 18months old to relieve this but still has some problems(he's 3 now). I can't say I don't question the safety of these blood thinners during pregnancy! Anyone has ANY other experiences like THIS?
Lovenox and Heparin don't cross the placenta, so your son is probably just prone to it. Honestly, some kids just get sick a lot when they're little. You should visit the yahoo group listed at the end of this video or find our group on facebook. Thanks!
I have FVL and i am a male. I found out after getting a blood claught in my leg. What worries me is my daughters, one of which is on birth control right now. She has not yet been tested but i worry a great deal. I almost feel a sence of responsibility to them both and hope they dont test positive!!!
You should definitely tell your daughters to get tested. If they just tell their gynecologist that their father has this disorder AND had a clot, they will test right away. Many women who have FVL and are on birth control have had clots, strokes and worse. Please advise her to get tested asap or visit one of the websites listed at the end of this video
I have Factor V Leiden. I had a blood clot in my legs 5 times now. I am 36 and still not have a baby. It is shocking how many doctors are still unaware of this condition or even lacking quite a bit of knowledge. I am desperate to have a baby but it's hard to get a doctor on your side that would be able to help. I am on warfarin indefinately. Warfarin crosses placenta, Fragmin, Clexan and Lovenox don't.. don't risk your life and take the injections.
I'm 25, dutch, also a factor V Leiden woman. I lost a son in 2007. The docters then found out I had FVL. In December 2008 I became a mother of a beautiful little girl. In consultation with my docter she was born 2 weeks before my do-date. She is a healthy young girl. 7months now. But when she's old enough to understand, I will tell her about FVL, and that there's a change she might have it as well. Nobody has to have to go through the pain of losing a child.
I am 22, 7 weeks pregnant and I have had blood clots twice in the past. I have to inject Lovenox 2xday everyday throughout my pregnancy and it's miserable.
For the women who aren't treating their Factor V, please know that the time when you are most likely to get blood clots is right AFTER you give birth! What good would it do to have a baby and them leave them alone in this world? Even if you don't want to treat during your pregnancy, please, for your baby's sake, treat for several weeks after.
i just found out that I have factor 5 along with Houghs syndrome, after having a stroke at 30. My neurologist reccomends never having any more children. He said hes not even sure how I was able to have my little angel Kyra, who is now 4. My pregnancy went perfect as did my 45 minute labor.Healthy babies can be born, my heart goes out to all of those women out there with this illness.
Im wondering, how many babies are born without complications with moms with this genetic disorder? though im 38 weeks, almost in the clear..im still on edge. haven't took blood thinners or anything. :( I guess we'll be ok right?
I'm sure there are much more babies born without complications than with (our baby was - NICU for a few weeks).
I think the fact that the women who DO know they have FVL can be proactive about it now. I'm surprised your doctor doesn't have you on anything. It's the end of the pregnancy that can be risky with umbilical cord deterioration and clotting. I'm glad things have gone okay for you so far. But still...have you joined the YAHOO group on FVL and Pregnancy? You shoudl! It's great support
Yeah earlier in my pregnancy they highly suggested that I inject myself with Lovenox but I went through this whole thing about trusting in my fellow man or just letting god take care of us alone. maybe if I have a c-section done to safely take him out early it can reduce complications? right now he's been very active and he goes to the atu for stress tests every week at the hospital. Oh and I heard that epidurals are bad for women with blood clotting disorders, Is that true?
I'm from Australia and the awareness of it here is just as low. I have lost two babies to factor 5 leiden and for my next pregnancy have to have Heparin injections everyday, I'll do whatever it takes to have a healthy little bub. Thankyou for helping to spread awareness of this.
Thank you for helping to spread the word that this is something all women need to be aware of.We need to get a law passed that everyone who is pregnant should get this simple blood test. The video was beautiful and Thank You for letting my grandson Damien be a part of your awareness project.
This video is a sad reminder of all the losses that have occurred! But knowledge is hope and understanding! Thank you for time to our cause! Knowledge is power!
