i wish sesame street can upload the making of mysterious theater and comments from the producers.. i'm really interested on how they produced this skit..
The only thing I know is that "Sesame Workshop" (in the past when Mysterious Theater was on air, "Sesame Workshop" was called the "Children's Television Workshop") produced Mysterious Theater from 1989-1992 but, the skits were still being aired from 1992-1999 where Vincent Twice was taken off Sesame Street in the year 1999. However, if you look on Muppet Wiki, maybe you might find some info. about Mysterious Theater.
One of my mom's favorite stories now that I'm older and in university is how when I was four or so, she walked into the house from doing some yard work and heard the Mysterious Theater theme coming from the living room TV where I was watching Sesame Street. She rushed in and couldn't find me. I was hiding in a cabinet because I was so scared of this intro. I'm so glad to find I wasn't the only one hahahahahaha
I think this Mysterious Theater skit was taped at Kaufman Astoria Studios, the home of "Sesame Street's" taping facilities since 1992, judging by how Vincent Twice's mansion room looks slightly different and how it was initially shown around 1992. The other three were produced at the older Teletape studios.
Yes, I felt the same way whenever I saw the painted woman in the intro. The thing I found the most scary about her is that, the way how she is holding her wine glass up to her mouth while having her eyes half closed (kind of like the look in the eyes when people sleep walk) and looking towards the tombstone while being a frozen painting.
Plus, hearing the sound of a wolf howling and hearing thunder and lightening made it look more scarier while seeing the painted woman in the intro.
I also used to think it was a rose but, the person DakariKingMykan mentioned to me that it was a wine glass, and "DakariKingMykan is right because, as I take a closer look at it, I can see that it's a wine glass.
Also, the painted woman here also has to do with the painted woman in Edward Gorey's "Classic Mystery Intro" of Masterpiece Theater where the painted woman had a wine glass where you can see her drinking out of it but here, the painted woman is frozen.
by the way i recorded the intro song and vincent twice greetings and farewell into my phone. i used to set the intro song as my ring tone but later decided to change it cos it's very disturbing, especially when i'm sleeping or in school...
The intro scared me so much as a little kid. I had to run out of the room. I don't think i ever actually saw the whole thing before. Well my fears are conquered.
These Mysterious Theater skits were on Sesame Street from 1989-1999. I remember that Sesame Workshop (it used to be called the "Children's Television Workshop" when these Mysterious Theater skits were on Sesame Street) produced Mysterious Theater from 1989-1992 where they stopped producing it in 1992 but, the skits were still being aired until the year 1999 where Vincent Twice was taken off Sesame Street then. (However, Vincent Twice appeared in Episode 3033 doing a skit with Maria).
I noticed that Vincent Twice's tongue must've been misplaced on the puppet or something in this one. It isn't visible really well most of the time, though you can see it around 4:33.
This seriously scared me to death when I was little. Not just Vincent Twice but this painting in the intro of the lady dressed in black and thunderclapping in the background and all that. It just scared me to death and I had nightmares a lot when I was little of that lady dressed in black in the painting her eyes were really frightening and her face and hair were too. But this doesn't bother me now like it used to but it still sends shivers through my body when I watch the intro.
Yes, I was also scared of the lady in the intro. I also thought that her eyes looked scary (I don't know where she is looking. Maybe she's looking at the tombstone). I also thought it looked scary how the lady in the intro is holding a rose up to her nose (I used to think that it was a lollipop she had her tongue on). Everytime whenever I would watch Sesame Street, at the end of every skit, I was constantly flipping the channels back and forth in case Mysterious Theater would come on.
ya,same here. i used to be very scared about the painted woman in black and also have nightmares of that picture since baby until now. it also send not only shivers to my body but also fever. Every time when i see the intro,i will have fever or sick after a few days, and when i happen to be sick it will caused it to get worse.
Well I'm certainly surprised to see I wasn't the only one scared of that painting of the woman in black in the intro of Mysterious Theater. The last time I ever had a nightmare about that picture was when I was like 16 years old but now that I'm over all that I don't have any nightmares about it anymore.
I was also scared to see that painted woman in the intro. Sometimes whenever Mysterious Theater would come on where I would see the intro, I would always mostly grab the remote very fast and change the channel. After I changed the channel, I would wait 15 seconds for the intro to end so I wouldn't see the painted woman anymore. However, after I changed the channel and waited, my heart would beat very fast and I would try to catch my breath after seeing the painted woman.
I agree. The painted woman is scary, not Vincent Twice.
To me, the thing I find the most scary while seeing the painted woman is (not only is she wearing black clothing) the scary look in her eyes pointing in the direction of the tombstone looking like she just woke up with tired eyes, and the other thing that looks scary in her is that, the way how she is holding a rose up to her nose without any movement since she's a frozen painting.
Yes, we sure have that in common. I thought I was the only one scared of the painted woman but, I read a lot of the comments on the other YouTube Mysterious Theater skits where other people mentioned that they're also scared of the painted woman.
I thought the painted woman looked a little freaky, mainly because of how it started on the close-up of her with her sad-looking eyes (hey, anyone at a funeral would obviously be sad). I think what I found more creepy was the music and sound effects, though I thought the music would've sounded MUCH scarier than here. It kinda reminds me of the music when Hooper's store caught fire in 2002 and Elmo was terrified by the scene
I agree. It was scary how the scene started with the close up of the painted woman (either her eyes look sad or, she is just taking a hard and close look at the tombstone). I also agree that, the music and the sound of the wolf and thunder and lightening made the intro sound even scarier while seeing the painted woman.
I also remember when Hooper's Store caught on fire where Elmo was scared but, I don't remember how Hooper's Store got on fire, and I don't remember the episode number.
Thank you very much. I just found on Muppet Wiki the episode number and how the fire got started. (It was also nice how that firefighter invited Elmo and Maria to the firestation to show Elmo how the firefighters do their job so Elmo wouldn't be scared).
I remember the skit where Count Von Count counts his mail and that music sure was scary (that was one of the very few skits where "The Count" acted like a vampire and talked like a vampire saying "greetings" in a vampire voice).
Like I said, I thought Vincent Twice went to jail after this sketch, and that's why there were no more sketches after that. I half expected to see a new episode with Vincent Twice in a striped suit, behind bars, introducing a new episode.
LOL, that would've been hilarious! It would start with the usual intro, but after it zoomed into the grave, we'd fade up to a prison cel with Vincent Twice in it, and it would be stormy outside.
dis caused me 2 hav nightmares since birth..till now everytime weh i switched off e lights n close my eyes, dis paintin n e sound effects appears in my mind...i really dunno wad 2 do...
This is the only time Vincent Twice has appeared in one of his own stories. Must be a bit of a gag, since this is nearing the end of Mysterious Theater's run. Vincent made me laugh when he surprisingly appeared in this episode!
That painting is ETCHED INTO THE BACK OF MY FUCKING MIND and WILL NEVER LEAVE. It always scared me so much that I thought I made it up, from a nightmare I had,but here it is, just as I remembered.
i seriously love you for saying that. im 18 now and i was terrified of that opening. i used to not watch sesame street because of that. i would hide into the nearest corner whenever i heard that intro lmfao. even now watching it just made me shiver
same here!! ever since i 1st saw dis video(a few mnths old),it caused me to have nightmares every night. Now i m 18,e scary picture is still in my mind, recently it caused my stomach to hav accute pain... n when i see it,i will freeze n heart pumpin even faster...i think i should go for thearapy... :(
by the way i've been a fan of sesame street old school since baby until now. actually i like mysterious theater's stories, but what i don't like is the intro. It won't stop me from watching sesame street. :)
I remember seeing this one when I was little! I liked the twist ending because of how Vincent Twice was the culprit and it wouldn't end with him in his library, instead incorporating him into the Sherlock Hemlock story! I only remember seeing this one and "Circle Search" as a kid, though I often saw these two on a semi-regular basis.
Probably when I was 8 or 9, was the first time I saw Mysterious Theater. The first time I saw it, I just sat through and watched the intro because I didn't know what was going on but, in the middle of the skit, I found the skit scary and I turned the tv off. So after that, everytime the intro came, I would quickly grab the remote to change the channel. Sometimes at the end of a Sesame Street skit, I would flip channels back and forth to get myself ready in case Mysterious Theater came.
I'm not quite sure why they stopped showing Mysterious Theater. If I were to take a guess, maybe they stopped showing Mysterious Theater since some people were scared seeing the intro with a painted woman, a wolf howling, and thunder and lightening crashing (I used to be scared to see the painted woman) and some people were scared seeing Vincent Twice on the skit. Probably with the young kids getting scared, their parents made complaints to PBS so they took Mysterious Theater off the show.
No problem. I remember that it was said that "Vincent Twice" was taken off Sesame Street in the late 90s and I remember seeing a Mysterious Theater skit in the year 1999, so I'm quite sure that, that Mysterious Theater skit on that Sesame Street episode was the last time they showed Mysterious Theater. Plus, with Vincent Twice saying at the end of this skit, "until next time, until next time, if there is a next time" probably meant that there will be no more Mysterious Theater skits anymore.
does anybody have or no where to get the segment case of the missing sock from ep 3033? its not really a mysterious theater but vince twice makes a cameo.
ya,i also want to see that episode! that was when vincent twice made his 1st appearance in the street scene. However, the intro still has the scary painted woman in black but the background and music is different.... if anyone has this episode please upload it on youtube, thanks! :)
I didn't see the painted woman either. The only thing from the intro that shows up is the music. I recall Maria also seeing Vincent for the first time, and naturally she asks "Who are you?" "I am your host, Vincent Twice Vincent Twice." After his introduction, Maria comments "This is crazy!" just as Sherlock and Watson enter.
It also ended with Vincent Twice announcing the sponsors in voiceover as the harpsichord music from the "Missing Cat" skit was playing
Yes, the intro is by Edward Gorey except the Classic Mystery Intro is different than on here on this skit. On the Classic Mystery Intro, it had a bird chirping very loud, and the painted woman was moving her arm and head and she was drinking from a wine glass. But here on the Sesame Street Mysterious Theater intro, the painted woman has a rose instead of a wine glass, and she's not moving at all, and instead of a bird chirping, there's a wolf howling, cat meowing, and thunder and lightning.
They do have a wolf howl in the Mystery! intro. It's even the exact same wolf howling sound clip used here when they zoom into the grave, except they play it near the end of the real Mystery! intro when they show that guy with the mustache taking notes.
I was scared to death of vincent twice when I was a lad. The painting of the lady at the beginning of the sketch was my cue to run out of the room screaming. Was anybody else scared of him?
I wasn't actually afraid of Vincent Twice when I was very young. (The reason probably I wasn't afraid of him was because he almost looked like Guy Smiley, and Guy Smiley was a muppet I liked). The only thing that scared me was the lady in the intro. because she has a scary look in her eyes, and the way she was holding a rose up to her nose looked scary. (Before I knew it was a rose, I thought when I was very young that it was a lollipop she was eating).
Oh, yeah. I was scared of Vincent Twice. It's sort of a legend in my family that whenever he came on, I ran from the room. But I think it was the music/intro image that scared me more than the puppet. But to a 3-year-old it's all the same thing. These videos still give me a chill or two...
yes...me!!!pls la 4 gdness sake!y muz ey broadcast such scary voodoo in kids show!dis scares em instead of educatin em!!luckily ey removed dis scary voodoo...
The one part of this MISSING TOAST / MISSING ROAST clip, where Vincent Twice Vincent Twice takes a bite of the chicken drumstick (part of the MISSING ROAST) makes me think of LAW AND ORDER CRIMINAL INTENT, because usually in the beginning of LAW AND ORDER CRIMINAL INTENT before the murder is committed, you see the suspect's behavior and acts, and you get the idea who really killed who.
I always loved "Mysterious Theater", but for some reason I didn't much care for this particular episode. I found the conclusion to be a bit disturbing. And why did Vincent end up with such sleepy eyes all of a sudden?
Maybe the reason Vincent Twice has sleepy eyes in this episode is because, they all probably wanted to try to make him look a little scary with his eyes half closed since his den is very dark with no light, and since the intro to Mysterious Theater is scary with a painted woman, wolf howling, and thunder crashing. These might be the reasons why Vincent Twice has sleepy eyes in this episode.
Frankly, I think he looks scarier the old way. He just looks all worn out, like he'd rather be at home. Plus, I like I said, I wasn't too crazy about the ending. He proved not to be very honest.
Probably another reason why Vincent Twice has tired eyes in this episode is because, he is probably very nervous in this episode since this is the last Mysterious Theater episode where he is a thief, and he was probably looking very scared if he was going to get caught for stealing the roast and toast. (Sometimes when some people get very scared, their eyes get half closed). Maybe that could be another reason why Vincent Twice has tired eyes in this episode.
That could be the case. It's the main reason why I didn't much care for this episode when I was young. I especially didn't like it when Vincent was given a chance to give the food back and he simply said 'no', and very defiantly I might add. Nevertheless, he's still one of my favorite minor Sesame Street characters.
I didn't like it either when Vincent Twice said "no" to Lady Agatha when she asked him to give her food back. I also didn't like it at the end when Vincent Twice wasn't willing to share the food with Sherlock Hemlock and Watson when Sherlock asked Vincent Twice if he can split it for three, and Vincent Twice said "no" again and walked out of the room being rude (probably walking back to his den to sit in his chair or to quit being the host). However, he is also one of the characters I like.
Well, this actually was the last Mysterious Theater skit. At the end of every Mysterious Theater skit Vincent Twice said, "until next time I am your host Vincent Twice saying farewell/goodbye/good night but, as Vincent Twice was ending this skit at the end, he said "until next time, if there is a next time." With him saying that was probably meaning that, that's the end of the Mysterious Theater skits and that was his way of saying, "I quit as the host now that I've been caught being a thief."
I did notice after this "Case Of The Missing Toast" Mysterious Theater skit, Vincent Twice appeared in Episode 3033 with Sherlock Hemlock and Watson for a Mysterious Theater skit with Maria called "The Case Of The Missing Sock" when Maria lost a sock at the laundromat.
I never did get to see Episode 3033. I just heard that Vincent Twice was on that episode with Maria. If I were to take a guess, I would say that the same intro as here with the painted woman, thunder and lightening, and wolf howling was not on Episode 3033 because for one thing, it might be difficult to switch the scene to this intro and back to Sesame Street and another thing, since Mysterious Theater is gone now, they probably threw out this whole painting of the woman, tombstone, etc.
The way he said if there is a next time proves this was the last one they made.

I agree. It was scary how the scene started with the close up of the painted woman (either her eyes look sad or, she is just taking a hard and close look at the tombstone). I also agree that, the music and the sound of the wolf and thunder and lightening made the intro sound even scarier while seeing the painted woman.
I also remember when Hooper's Store caught on fire where Elmo was scared but, I don't remember how Hooper's Store got on fire, and I don't remember the episode number.
afriendofbean 2 years ago
It was in Episode 3981. The fire was started when Alan's Fried Chicken special accidentally ignited the grease around it.
And the music in the skit where Count von Count counts his mail sounds MUCH scarier than the music in Mysterious Theater, IMHO.
BTW, I am planning a music video of "Thriller" set to clips from Sesame Street. I bet you can guess how I'll use Mysterious Theater clips in it ;)
wiley207 2 years ago
Thank you very much. I just found on Muppet Wiki the episode number and how the fire got started. (It was also nice how that firefighter invited Elmo and Maria to the firestation to show Elmo how the firefighters do their job so Elmo wouldn't be scared).

Mysterious Theater was taken off Sesame Street in the year 1999.

ya,i also want to see that episode! that was when vincent twice made his 1st appearance in the street scene. However, the intro still has the scary painted woman in black but the background and music is different.... if anyone has this episode please upload it on youtube, thanks! :)
mcht50202 3 years ago
It didn't have that intro; I've seen that before
wilek209 2 years ago
but if i'm not wrong, they still use that painted woman... but the scene is not at the cemetry...
mcht50202 2 years ago
I didn't see the painted woman either. The only thing from the intro that shows up is the music. I recall Maria also seeing Vincent for the first time, and naturally she asks "Who are you?" "I am your host, Vincent Twice Vincent Twice." After his introduction, Maria comments "This is crazy!" just as Sherlock and Watson enter.
It also ended with Vincent Twice announcing the sponsors in voiceover as the harpsichord music from the "Missing Cat" skit was playing

i think the only thig that scared me more than vincent twice when i was little was the winter warlock in santa claus is comin to town

Isn't the beginning the Mystery intro by Edward Gorey?
Milhousefan01 3 years ago
Yes, the intro is by Edward Gorey except the Classic Mystery Intro is different than on here on this skit. On the Classic Mystery Intro, it had a bird chirping very loud, and the painted woman was moving her arm and head and she was drinking from a wine glass. But here on the Sesame Street Mysterious Theater intro, the painted woman has a rose instead of a wine glass, and she's not moving at all, and instead of a bird chirping, there's a wolf howling, cat meowing, and thunder and lightning.

O, thx! :)
Milhousefan01 3 years ago
They do have a wolf howl in the Mystery! intro. It's even the exact same wolf howling sound clip used here when they zoom into the grave, except they play it near the end of the real Mystery! intro when they show that guy with the mustache taking notes.

I was scared to death of vincent twice when I was a lad. The painting of the lady at the beginning of the sketch was my cue to run out of the room screaming. Was anybody else scared of him?
FriendlyWalrus 3 years ago 5
I wasn't actually afraid of Vincent Twice when I was very young. (The reason probably I wasn't afraid of him was because he almost looked like Guy Smiley, and Guy Smiley was a muppet I liked). The only thing that scared me was the lady in the intro. because she has a scary look in her eyes, and the way she was holding a rose up to her nose looked scary. (Before I knew it was a rose, I thought when I was very young that it was a lollipop she was eating).
afriendofbean 3 years ago
Oh, yeah. I was scared of Vincent Twice. It's sort of a legend in my family that whenever he came on, I ran from the room. But I think it was the music/intro image that scared me more than the puppet. But to a 3-year-old it's all the same thing. These videos still give me a chill or two...

Although, on the plus side, at least this time Sherlock gives Watson some credit.

That;s because watson threatenly growled at him.

I always loved "Mysterious Theater", but for some reason I didn't much care for this particular episode. I found the conclusion to be a bit disturbing. And why did Vincent end up with such sleepy eyes all of a sudden?
Garrettk41 4 years ago
Maybe the reason Vincent Twice has sleepy eyes in this episode is because, they all probably wanted to try to make him look a little scary with his eyes half closed since his den is very dark with no light, and since the intro to Mysterious Theater is scary with a painted woman, wolf howling, and thunder crashing. These might be the reasons why Vincent Twice has sleepy eyes in this episode.
afriendofbean 4 years ago
Frankly, I think he looks scarier the old way. He just looks all worn out, like he'd rather be at home. Plus, I like I said, I wasn't too crazy about the ending. He proved not to be very honest.
Garrettk41 4 years ago
Probably another reason why Vincent Twice has tired eyes in this episode is because, he is probably very nervous in this episode since this is the last Mysterious Theater episode where he is a thief, and he was probably looking very scared if he was going to get caught for stealing the roast and toast. (Sometimes when some people get very scared, their eyes get half closed). Maybe that could be another reason why Vincent Twice has tired eyes in this episode.
afriendofbean 4 years ago
That could be the case. It's the main reason why I didn't much care for this episode when I was young. I especially didn't like it when Vincent was given a chance to give the food back and he simply said 'no', and very defiantly I might add. Nevertheless, he's still one of my favorite minor Sesame Street characters.
Garrettk41 4 years ago
I didn't like it either when Vincent Twice said "no" to Lady Agatha when she asked him to give her food back. I also didn't like it at the end when Vincent Twice wasn't willing to share the food with Sherlock Hemlock and Watson when Sherlock asked Vincent Twice if he can split it for three, and Vincent Twice said "no" again and walked out of the room being rude (probably walking back to his den to sit in his chair or to quit being the host). However, he is also one of the characters I like.
afriendofbean 4 years ago
I originally thought he was thrown in, and that's why there were never any episodes after this.
rmumusicalrob 3 years ago
Well, this actually was the last Mysterious Theater skit. At the end of every Mysterious Theater skit Vincent Twice said, "until next time I am your host Vincent Twice saying farewell/goodbye/good night but, as Vincent Twice was ending this skit at the end, he said "until next time, if there is a next time." With him saying that was probably meaning that, that's the end of the Mysterious Theater skits and that was his way of saying, "I quit as the host now that I've been caught being a thief."
afriendofbean 3 years ago
I did notice after this "Case Of The Missing Toast" Mysterious Theater skit, Vincent Twice appeared in Episode 3033 with Sherlock Hemlock and Watson for a Mysterious Theater skit with Maria called "The Case Of The Missing Sock" when Maria lost a sock at the laundromat.
afriendofbean 2 years ago
ya,,, i remember watching this episode 3033 once.. but i can't remember whether the intro is the same as this...
mcht50202 2 years ago
I never did get to see Episode 3033. I just heard that Vincent Twice was on that episode with Maria. If I were to take a guess, I would say that the same intro as here with the painted woman, thunder and lightening, and wolf howling was not on Episode 3033 because for one thing, it might be difficult to switch the scene to this intro and back to Sesame Street and another thing, since Mysterious Theater is gone now, they probably threw out this whole painting of the woman, tombstone, etc.

Camille Bonora also performs Lady Agatha in this sketch.
