WAAAAAAY Underrated Old Skool joint!!! They don't do it like this anymore! Now all there is is this crap that glorifies the worse parts of the hood that keep Black folks held down... weed, mistreatment of Black women etc.
And Chuck D's brother too. Song was tight even though the lyrics were simplistic. Won't comment on the video budget either. Sign of the times I guess.
1988 this was the year I started rapping. I started out as writing raps, and then in 1992 I started learning how to freestyle. It's great to be diverse. Writing rhymes or freestyling is like being able to fight with your fists or use a gun. It's always good to be able to do both. LOL
The woman who played the teacher was an artist... She did a remake of "For the Love of Money" if memory serves me right. Does anyone remember her name?
That teacher was a freak! Did you see her let down her hair like that?!?! LOL I used to have this CD. I used to love that bass line and horns in this track. You could actually bump this in your system and it was sound off the hook!
Exactly! I loved this song back in 1988---it was so catchy and fun, with an unusual groove--I think this was closing this rapper ever came to a hit, though.
The beat was tight. They just couldn't rap worth shit. The darkskinned cat is Eddie and Charlie Murphy's youngest brother. Still didn't help them though.
Speak for yourself. I remember 'This Beat is Military', 'Somebody's Brother', 'No Sell Out', 'Turn That Down'. Those are the ones that I rocked the most. Even bought their second tape although it was a disappointment. Only track I liked was 'I Got It'.
When this dropped, we never played this version. We played the 12 Inch version which was more of a DUB version without ALL the lyrics. This Bobcat Beat was Da sh-t back then.
This record sounds so big..'pretty sure Pharrell was inspired by this song to make "Pass The Courvoisier" - I had the single in the cardboard with "No Sell Out" on the B side...man, those were the days
I had this joint on 12" vinyl. wish they wouldn't hog the embed but it's like that. i know some folk that would appreciate this.......................................... "the crowd was buggin' but then i had to cough, ("cough2 cough2 cough2") cause the kid b4 me was soft"
Yep, Rap City 4:30 after school! That was when the MCs had 2 or 3 messages going on...like educating yourself, wearing the Pan-Afrikan medallion, Red/Black/Green. Sad, sad, sad. know we got lollipop, laffy taffy, idiotic, bafoonery nonsense now!
Victor is right homie it's Vernon Lynch Jr. if i'm not mistakin' matter of fact if you look at the movie Coming to America Vernon is in the scene where they are standing in line to go to the bathroom and the soda guys recognize Eddie Murphy. Check it out i'm glad i'm not the only one who loves this HIPHOP shit especially the trivia aspect, this garbage they playin' today is empty and typical.HIPHOP 4eva
LOL Eddie Murphy's brother, Vernon LMAO!!!! This was wack as hell, but you know something...I can listen to THIS before I can listen to this bullshit out now anyday LOL
Yeah!! Yeah!! '88 was in the midst of the Golden Era. God I miss these days!! Everytime I see videos from the Golden Era it's both a relief & a powerful reminder of just how far one errant generation of kids have pushed rap music so far from the culture of hip hop & allowed it to become a sad & pitiful caricature of itself..
I know what you mean. It seems like most people who are in their late 20s and early to mid thirties came from this golden age era. We were either in middle school or high school when the golden age of hip hop exploded and we experienced it. It's a shame that these kids didn't get the chance to experience real hip hop like this unless their mother, father, aunt, uncle or their older siblings played it around them, but us, we experienced it when it first came out!!!!
true dat, practically anyone born in the 70's really know the golden era.
the very last cd i can remember buying was biggie's 2 cd, i never bought p.diddy's cd when that came out after, then never bought another cd since, except 2pacs Strictly 4 my niggaz re-release on cd.
1998-1999 nothing, then came MP3's and wack mc's.
So true,so true! I'm old enough to remember radio BEFORE rap even existed, so yeah, I think it's sad that most of these kids under 25 or so don't know that rap can be more than sex, drinking, and bragging about how much money/how bad you are in your hood. The thing I appreciate about old school rap is that there was more diversity in the subject matter--you could rap about staying in school, learning black history, or just plain having fun or being a gangster. I definitely miss that!
if u only search theres something for everybody out there, so hip hop aint dead or something like that, its just bigger and better, that old shit sounded good then, it dont do now, not all of it though, some are still timeless still, peace yeah
