  • like your work...i will be in uk march for training at London Academy how do i contact you, my mail is femfolk@yahoo.com

  • Thank you for sharing. :)

  • can you please give some details of where to place the wheels? thanks very much.

  • I shouldn't have thrown away my skate wheels!

  • I made a design much like this, the doubling of the ply wood is a really good idea! I used roller blade wheels for mine cause i heard it helps silence the rumbling noise it produces (didnt work too well) any ideas to help minimize rumbling noise from using the dolly?

  • Good looking shots at the end

  • How much money does it cost to buy all the parts?

  • pity you stopped making videos like this... you lost viewers...

  • mate this is very very good!

  • Great Ideas! :D

  • great ideas ........ GOOD !!

  • I made one with just 8 wheels. You don't really need as many as you have on this one. To connect the pipes I use bits of broomstick with tape on it. Same idea as you really.

These are so easy to buils and you can get really professional looking shots with them. Checkout my dolly here: watch?v=-V4Qx1De6sk

  • Excellent build, this should help with a project i have planned for April. I would be placing the rails on an uneven surface though so how would you get round that problem?

  • hi dude i just picked up a mono pod from 7dayshop (google it) it is thier own brand and it is realy good for steady cams please reply to this because i just bought one

  • Hi, where did you order the bearings from?

    Best

  • @SvetozarIvanov eBay

  • @SvetozarIvanov any skate shop

  • 7:59 wow! check out those sneekers!

  • that was a very usufull information thx a lot mite, god bless ya))

  • stolen from filmriot

  • I'll just use my skateboard instead, would that be ok?

  • Many thanks for that. A really helpful video and very nicely presented; you have a great talent for informal, friendly but very informative presentation.

  • omg u didnt say 'hope you're havin a great day'!!!!!!!!

  • We're trying to get our feature film funded! Please watch our pitch!

    /watch?v=ZaRsWgiu4DM

  • I put my tripod on a sk8board :)

  • It's quite hard to find some decent priced skateboard wheels, cheapest I can find online is about £10 for 4.

  • I'm going to try making a DIY Dolly Track soon.

  • i want to bomb a train track on that

  • Really nice job!

  • Great job Rick, well done indeed!

  • does the 54MM wheels work?

  • @daknewguy should do - as long as they are all the same diameter I think any size wheels (within reason) should work.

  • Why don't you get 3 inch carriage bolts instead of getting 4 inch bolts and hacksawing off an inch?

  • hëh_í_fËÉl_sø_lÖñElý_töDÄý

  • Can the dolly be made to turn on the tracks instead of only traveling straight?

  • @SE021002 No, not this design - you would need to design a set of turnable bogeys and be able to attach them to the board whilst still maintaining a stable platform. Probably a bit trickier than it sounds.

  • @SE021002 Here you go! /watch?v=03_SgU-AewA

  • Great work, rickvanman !

Instead of those wood blocks with packing tape, you can get blanking-off

caps which are supposed to be solvent-welded inside waste pipe. Just cut

off the actual cap bit and leave about an inch protruding. That way, each track

section has its own built-in spigot to join the next piece ?

    Chris

  • Great tut. We used a similar design for our dolly and now our no-budget feature premiere's in London in September! It was shot for only $300. If you want, check it out on facebook(dot)com/MemoryLaneMovie

  • Great video check out my sony vegas muzzle flash howto to Kick the action up in your videos

    /watch?v=L67FGa5Bsz0

  • muy buen video

  • 50 people make expensive dollys ,and feeling threatened ;)

  • I've been debating weather or not to make one of these for several months now,but your video has really inspired me to just get on and do it!

    thank you so much rick!

  • it's very good how it would take a curve is it possible with that???

  • I have a question. After watching so many dolly videos, I am wondering, is it really necessary to use two rails instead of just one?

  • Dude! amazing instructional video, thank you so much, here is a video of my homemade dolly youtube.com/watch?v=WPwgS8OxoFk

  • Great stuff, I made one and it works a treat. Check out about 1:26 of my video 'I'm So Lazy'. cheers

  • wow, that is a great dolly!

  • Hello,

Thanks for this video it's AMAZING!

We are making a short film for uni and are going to attempt to make this so can you help us by answering these questions,

you no the aluminium wheel base, were do you get those from and how do you know where to drill the holes e,g measurements between holes?

    Thanks again

  • Hey rick, Great vid mate, Just a quick question, What size are the Skateboard wheel spacers, Thanks

  • Well done, Sir!

Why bother buying a track when one can do it themselves...

  • mate, can I say what a superb video you have put together. I will be sure to use this design when making mine :)

  • @alexie28 Thanks :o) Good luck with the project.

  • @rickvanman well its finished, and works a treat! Thanks again :)

  • how much does it cost to make this?

  • @krazeemarx it says 80 pounds in the description

  • Hi, great video by the way :) just wonder if you went to film school or something? and i'm from uk as well

  • pretty cool - thanks for posting

    :)

  • I thought this was great! Very informative and creative! I'm going to try it myself. Thanks!!

  • You are awesome. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Your videos are super useful and you help people to make their vids. Thanks.

  • is it necessary to use that many skateboard wheels? it means more bumps in the shot if the creases between the two pipe lengths if you use more, so can you just use like 4 per side?

  • when he zoomed in he reminded me of adam sandler... :O

  • what kind of metal was that can you help me perhaps a uk link??? or jjust the name and dimensions thanks mate ;)

  • As an image maker this is fantastic!

As a skateboarder ;) Yes, wheels and bearings are in plenty on eBay, you can pick up a set of 4 for about a tenner if not less, but with the children's skateboards the axl/bearing size can be slightly different from conventional skateboard parts, Your normal skateboarding hardwear is all universal

  • Rick, thanks for sharing.

I'm rebuilding my dolly to use a similar wheel configuration, but after checking the price of skateboard wheels I've decided to have them turned on a lathe from 50 dia. mm nylon rod. That way I can easily make/add more wheels later and also use bearings that have a 5/16" bore and will therefore take larger bolts.

You can see all my custom built rigs at sitca.com

  • what are the dimensions of the wooden board?

  • @5shanes 2ft x 3ft

  • nice work! any ideas on how to minimize any squeaking noises that the dolly makes while moving down the track? i can somewhat hear it slightly in the background noise

  • them old wheels are ricta cores :)

  • if you want your dolly to go like mega MEGA smooth then it might help to buy some longboard bearings cuz those things go forever

  • i could make a whole roller coaster with that

  • Thanks for teaching me! That really help :D Alot cheaper aswell!

  • the 1st 50lbs dolly, have fun carrying that around

  • You should combine this with the "zolly" effect and see what you can come up with... =)

    Awesome tutorial, Rick!!

  • Pretty Asian beauties *lushfmlk.info*

  • how much do you charge me to build me one of these it's genius! How many pounds do you recommend on board? please reply by attn: dolly building guy!

    thnks!

  • @421grant Hi - glad you like. Trust me, it would be cheaper and less fuss for you to buy a professional dolly system than for me to ship you one of these from the UK to Mexico! It weighs a ton :o)

  • Thanks! help me building my dolly. Check out my chanell and my movie A ramp. I used a homemade dolly in that one :)

  • brilliant video mate.. wicked work.. keep building things for indie producers, real helpful cheers.

  • brilliant video mate.. wicked work.. keep building things for indie producers, real helpful cheers.

  • go to a second hand store and pay lik 5 bucks for rollerblades. hey i was wondering did the angle aluminum wheel bases already have holes in them or did you drill them? how much did the angle aluminum cost? and how much is that tubig and what size is it? (if you dont mind).

and one more thing i take it you are in england? so i will have to find out how much the difference is between england money and canadian. thank you so much for posting this video! it is a great idea.

  • go to a second hand store and pay lik 5 bucks for rollerblades

  • where did you get/make the v shaped metal sticks that the wheels go onto? how do you get the holes in them????

  • I bought 3 different size of wheels and i didn´t notice, but got a solution: The first row I put 2 in each side of the same size, the next row 2 in each side from the same size, 3rd and 4rth row same thing, so that way I have a little inclination but equals in both sides. The reason I bring this up is to sugest everyone to buy packages of 4 equal wheels and you would have no problem. This because not always you can find 18 cheap wheels from the same size.

Nice vid by the way, really useful!!!!!

  • thank you very much for the idea

  • films so pro!

  • thats was awsome...thank you man

  • Hey Rick this tutorial is awesome!

I have found some good cheap skateboards wheels online except they give two measurments like vault 53mm x 32mm so when you mentioned in your notes that the wheels need to be 50 - 52mm do you know what the other corresponding meausurment would be??

  • @honeycombqueen21 I don't thing it matters as long as they are all the same size.

  • Thanks for sharing. Great video.

  • If you want to reduce the noise due to the rolling dolly, you should use filmer wheels ( longboard wheels) made of a smoother gel than the usual 95A urethane.

  • That was awesome-- exactly what I needed. The "how to guides" online are so much more confusing-- thank you.

  • You're a bloody legend champ! you're a proper DIY king! Keep it up!

  • @wolfiethedistroyer thanks :o)

  • Lol its weird when he says skateboard it don't sound right

  • fkd bearings !!

  • Rick - how did you secure the aluminium V to the wood?

  • this video is great!

i'm going to attemp one as i've got a short film to shoot very soon.

i've spent so much of my free time researching how to make a DIY dolly track, and here it is all in one!

    thank you!

  • Dude, please, please, please make these and sell them on eBay :P I want a cheap solution like this soo bad but I know my DIY abilities stop short... I'd pay fair money :P

Please consider making some to sell :)

  • @GeorgeMaier I thought about it actually, but the weight makes it impossible to do cheaply. They are so heavy, the postage costs combined with the production costs makes it "not cheap".

  • @GeorgeMaier buy a cheap skateboard and change some things! like the board

  • @GeorgeMaier Yeah, what he said!

  • @GeorgeMaier Thanks for the idea, I get asked this often, but they take a long time to make, the parts are dear and they weigh so much, shipping costs would be crazy. In reality it would be so expensive, you'd be able to get a pro starter kit for the same price.

  • @rickvanman Point me in the direction of one of these pro starter kits please :P

  • @GeorgeMaier sorry - havent a clue - I was guessing :o(

  • @rickvanman My point exactly. The cheapest set up I have came across was about £2,000 for a 1 meter track system. I'd only be willing to pay about £400 for something like that.

  • @GeorgeMaier I make these all the time at my job. If you or anyone really want one just msg me. I have to figure out what the shipping would be though.

  • @GeorgeMaier but... all you need is a drill, wood and wheels. and bolts..

  • Thanks mate, Stoked you could help.

  • '

what is the number of ABEC ball bearing on the wheel

  • thanks man. your tutorials are very helpful!

  • great help man! but too many wheels.... and for the rail: is possible to use tubes? like pvc?

  • great help man! but too many wheels.... and for the rail: is possible to use tubes? like pvc?

  • thank you for information, i like that!

  • Wow

im not into filmmaking or anything but that test film was very smooth

    Awsome

  • excellent !!! thank you.

  • awesome video... !!! thank you for posting.. :-)

  • u have alot of unnecessary equipment, im a longboarder (downhill skateboarder) and you dont needa waste the money on spacers as you would be making the bearings to tight, plus buy bearings that are like super super cheap for a project like this, it appears you have reds which are expensive for this sort of project... nice job!

  • thnx for making tips for new comer film maker. It may helps me to make a dolly.

    carry on with ur tips.

    karim,Italy

  • That was frack'in smooth.

  • great idea...we love it! we will build it! THX

  • Excelente!

  • Seems like a better setup than my current one, thank you!

  • wow those are really old school skate wheels.

  • Love the build! Thanks for all the great tips, and not just the ones about film making!

  • Put a wood screw type eye bolt in each end and it gives you the ability to have someone with a rope or stiff hook rod to be able to move the dolley for the person doing the camera work, or for a dolley without a camera operator. You could engineer one of the wheels as a driven wheel and use a motor from a wheelchair to move it at a specific speed too with a small deep cycle battery and speed control.

  • thanks so much for your work!! i will tray n do one soon

  • bones reds bearings lol

  • what a wonderful dolly track!!!

    thanks for that!

  • hey there. just found you via google. first i'd like to say THANK YOU for all these videos! you've given me so many tips for a shoot i'll be doing, it's my first real gig since college and i've forgotten so much. you've given me so much creative inspiration with these videos, you're brilliant :)

hopefully that's a good ego boost for you on this fine sunday. moving on to my question, where/how did you get the aluminum framing to attach the wheels to?

many thanks!! i'll keep watching for sure!

  • @solarcry Glad the videos help.

I've added some details about where I got the angle aluminium in the notes of this video.

  • Oh my god. I just realized that I've subscribed to you for 3 years now, I remember this was one of the first videos I watched. And you still keep creating good content, mini-series, tutorials, vlogs and much more. Keep them coming.

  • @chrismastere LOL! Thanks for sticking around :o)

  • Thanks for the tutorial. Awesome.

  • You Mean Where Theres A WHEEL Theres A Way

  • Awesome vid

  • OR you could have just ridden on a skateboard instead of riding a bigger piece of wood

  • I would go a step further and make track spacers that the track could be placed on top of that would ensure the track remains evenly spaced every couple feet. Great video!

  • Would using rollerblade wheels work if you got a smaller aluminum angle piece? Great video by the way, very helpful. Cheers mate

  • Thanks for this tutorial, mine came out awesome! thanks again.

  • You happen to be very beautiful, many thanks for the video playback. it happens to be unfortunate im living within Aulander considering that i cannot end up getting quality makeup, nevertheless i receive complimentary samples of makeup from "Gratis Makeup Samples". i adore L'Oreal cosmetics!

  • What font did you use?

  • We also made a dolly to put a cam on. We didn't require to build it though I just took some left over laminate flooring, clicked those toghether to form a long flat surface (click together lengthwise) and use a longboard (large skateboard) on it with a small tripod attached on it.

  • i have been trying to get a dolly for my shoot but they have been coming prity expensive u have open a way for me thank u

  • i have been trying to get a dolly for my shoot but they have been coming prity expensive u have open a way for me thank u

  • Why not make a roller coaster :3

  • @WAKStudios I keep thinking about it!

  • Nice film. Also have a look at 'singlecamerapro' in youtube. Its a video on Creative Camera Technique, made by an award winning (BAFTA) BBC senior cameraman. Used for training in the BBC

  • I'm curious, do all of your wheels touch the track? I just made a track dolly with 8 wheels and I've got one stubborn wheel that doesn't touch the track. I think my base or the way I mounted the wheels isn't 100% perfect. Not sure if it's going to affect performance.

  • @sonicclang it should be ok and will probably get used if the track is on uneven surfaces. as long as the dolly runs smoothly, you should be fine, otherwise just drill a fresh set of holes and re-attach them.

  • @sonicclang you probably have different size wheels which makes a uneven dolly. make sure your wheels are all the same size.

  • You assembled those wheels a bit wrong. On skateboard there is a washer + bearing + spacer + bearing + washer + nut so you can tighten it up as much as you can (so you don't loose your wheels) but wheels still spin at normal rate not slower as if you assemble them without spacer and tighten them too much.

Other than that i really like this design chap and effective :)

  • @zoidbergslo It looks to me like the carriage bolt he used is resting on the inner race of the bearing, which is exactly what you want and don't need a washer in that case. Not just any washer will work either. It has to be the right size. He seems like a pretty smart guy, I'm pretty sure he knows not to sandwich crush the whole bearing.

  • @helianimal Well i was referring to those low profile washers that you get with your skateboard those are same size as inside ring of the bearing. And if you check video around 5:45 you will see that you can accidentaly tighten your bearings too much without spacer between bearings.

  • @1300135halokills You could, but they're pretty loud. However, if you use rollerblade whells, it will move more effectively and quietly

  • Hey, I'm sure I'm not the only person to ask but, do you think you could make a low to no budget Jib? It would help me out, as well as many many more filmmakers

  • really helpful, thanks you!

  • the size is 6008z bearings

  • you could also potentially use longboard wheels they are MUCH faster and slide much more easier than vert wheels which is what your using. also i think you could use a smaller board and only have 4-8 wheels?

  • You could try rollerblade (inline skate) wheels. They are considerably cheaper, but I don't know if they compromise the design at all.

  • Thanks for this, building one now.

  • i am going to build one myself! thank you mate ;)

  • hi Rick!

i´ve build a dolly like yours. check it out on my videos. i just have one right now, but, keep watching my channel, cause I will put more videos, and the result, on the short film that we are starting to shot right tomorrow.

    my best regards from spain!

    pd. sorry about my English
