Wow. Thank you for this tutorial. I've tried & tried to do this stitch just by reading the directions & never quite "got it." Seeing what the instructions were telling me to do from your tutorial has been really helpful. Again, thank you.
Do u have any pattern for baby a newborn baby sweater using this stitch.... something simple and mess free....:) Please guide... I wanna make one for my baby on way
This stitch looks very effective. Thanks for sharing it with us. I haven't tried it out yet...but will let you know how it goes when I do. Thanks again for your generosiity.
@Nessmo65 - A coworker made a lovely scarf using this pattern. It was beautiful. I asked her for the pattern and we found this tutorial Now I am in the process of making a couple scarves in Cream..Absolutely fab !!
@tabithawizard....your welcome glad to ave helped...still need help let me know try to finish helping, now back to finishing my blanket using this pattern....almost done!
Ok......I definitely figured it out. Sorry Mikey and ladies prior. Do however many sets of 8 you wish to do and ADD 4 more chains. Double crochet into the 4th chain from hook and across. Say you used three sets of 8=24+4=28........Double crochet in 4th chain from hook across = 26 double crochets.
Alyxandrdingo and tabithawizard..... I used a basket weave not long ago in granny squares, only my pattern was 3/3/3. So I put mikeys video to the test...(WHICH WHOM I LOVE AND FOLLOW DEARLY!). I figured it out.....DO NOT add the two extra chains at the end AND DC in the 4th CH from the hook not the 3rd. Then follow what Mickey says and the last chain should only be one and you HDC the last CH......chain 2 each new row
So, I did this same weave myself a while ago, and I ran into the same problem you had, with the extra post. Well that's all fine and dandy that you figured a way to just keep going, BUT what I want to know is, how do you nip this problem in the butt BEFORE you end up with the extra post? What did we do wrong in the beginning that gave us this unwanted post? I'd really like to know. If you have an answer, if you could shoot it my way, that'd be a big help. Thanks.
@Alyxandrdingo I want to know too, if anyone knows help us out, I keep restarting with different number of cast-ons but problem still occurs. Thank you
I'm making a Husband Hat, and am about to make the brim. I think I might want to make the brim look like this basketweave stitch. Since I've been working in spiral this whole time, do you have any tips about adding this stitch to this tube shape project? I suppose I will have to turn in order to get the stitch pattern. Do you anticipate any problem doing this?
Thank you so much, i really wondert how to do that, because i dont really understand padderns when i read them, but when i see someone doing it i understand i right away.So that is Easy thank you and Greetings from Germany
I would just like to send out a big ol' "THANK YOU!" I can't believe how absolutely amazing my project came out! And I'm a total novice to crochet. You are a fabulous teacher! :)
Hi Mike. I would like to make this scarf using 8 x 3 weave and 4 on the end - like your gray swatch. In your video, on the 2nd row, you show an extra stitch. If you were doing this in groups of 8 stitches, plus 2 - one for each end and the chain 3 for the foundation, where did the extra stitch come from?
Thanks Mike. I'm making a baby afghan with this pattern. Doing it in white then plan to add a pink/blue/multi (?) colored border. It's looking very nice so far. Had to add in a new skein of yarn which was a bit tricky. Seems to look fine.
@Mooneybeams1 you could use a 4ply worsted weight yarn and a sz I or J hook for this project......that what mikey is using here.....also if you look on the paper band thats wrapped around your yarn it says what hook is recommended for the yarns weight etc......hope this helps.....cathy@mikeys helpdesk :)
I need your help desperately. I am making a baby sweater and am stumped!! The directions call for this "2 sc in first sc, working BEHIND ch-2 sps; 3 sc in each sc across to last." I can't find anything anywhere that actually SHOWS me how to work "behind" this ch-s sps... If there is anyway you can create a video, that would be wonderful. There is NO ONE on Youtube who demonstrates how to crochet BEHIND a stitch. PLEASE HELP!!!

Just want to add that I agree with you, it is brilliant ~ and I think I will make an entire afghan, as well. It is easy once you helped me figure it out ~ but, for me, it was very hard to figure out. So ~ I sure don't want to lose this, now that I have it. Thanks again. :)

@anandazen30 what do you mean by ends the sides of your project or the pieces left when your done that hang off the project?? let me know and i will try to help cathy @ mikeys helpdesk :)
@anandazen30 In this tutorial Mike said to chain 2, one for each end. I tried this and had weird ends as well. I remedied it by chaining just 1 and it came out right. I hope this makes sense!

Just finished my sample & it turned out great! Will make a blanket. One change I did was to work in 8's plus 6. Basically just added 4 more stitches. This way the columns begin & end with the same stitches. Also I was having trouble w/tension & holding onto the project. I changed to the way you hold your yarn. Holding it In my middle finger;not the pointer finger & drapped the thread over my pointer finger & thru other 3, pointed finger just a bit & WHA LA, no more problems! Thanx for the help!!
Hi just wanted you to know that i enjoyed your video of this stitch even though i'm lefthanded it was easy to follow. I'm making a blanket for my grandson who will be coming in october thanks again for being a great teacher
Thank you so very much for your wonderful tutorial! I've wanted to crochet a basket weave blanket for such a long time, but most tutorials I'd found make it so confusing. Your tutorial is easy to follow, and I've learned a lot. =) Thanks again for such a wonderful video!
Thank you so much. After looking at several web sites to relearn this stich your was the easiest to follow. It all came flooding back to me. And no annoying voice. Thank you so much
Yess! I could follow your instructions in this vid, now I'm making a cellphone for my hubby and hope it will be finished soon. I use a fine and cheap yarn but with the wonderful result. Thx Mike, u r a great teacher.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the single raised or sunken stitch just a relief stitch? You are just grouping them together, thus creating a basketweave stitch, which looks as though it could be done in any number of stitches...two, three, four, five, as long as you make sure your initial row is properly counted. Is this correct?
Omg! I didn't think I would be able to do this but now that I started it is so easy! Ty Mikey. I love how it looks too. I think I might make a baby pillow using basket weave stitch! ^.^
Thank you for these wonderful crochet instructions. So much better on video than having a friend show me or using a pattern. Very visual and well done, thank you.
Thanks for the vid. I needed to brush up on the basketweave stitch. I am also looking for Fisherman Crochet patterns. I made one in 96' and won a Best in Show with it, but they are hard to find.
Going to video my granny square .. so you can help me.. please.. Also .. Have you tryed the "Martha Stitch?" I cant find it.. or anything like it on Youtube. You start in the upper corner of the blanket.. and work down in little U shaped "balls" .. twisting and connecting them to form a raised and lowered checker board. ((I will do a tutorial for you .. Give me a day (its 5am)
I usually watched "The Art of Crochet by Teresa" for my crochet tutorials. Until I and several coworkers ran into the ""Granny Square dilema".. No matter how many videos we watched... The larger the square.. the more it rippled up like a shrinky dink. I directed everyone to your videos because your square stays flat the longest.. and Now we are all hooked on your videos and the large variety of stitches.
Your instructions are so easy. This is my first project and it's soooo easy. I don't know how to figure out weight and needle size yet, My husband gave me some very heavy weight yarn and I used a J hook. There are a few holes where I go from in front of the post then in back of the post, but for my first project I'm quite pleased.
I'm making a scarf using this stitch and was wondering how to finish it off once I reach the end. Do I need to crochet a special row or will it take care of itself?
you are awesome...so thorough in your explanations and technique! this is such a rarity w/ crochet tutorials. count me among your faithful followers. thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this informative video - I am using this stitch to make a nice warm sweater for my best friend for Christmas - in red heart yarn beach - initially i was afraid that the patter of the stitch would be lost in the variegated yarn color but it looks great - again thank you :-)
@MissSiERRA85 i would change colors at the beginning of the row.. if you dont know how to do that ... search for crochet changing colors and there should be a video to help you .. good luck
I'm so confused. Usually you're easy to follow but this time your words aren't as clear and you race through the first process of the weave itself. I have no clue if you are going THROUGH the pillar or just around. You don't slow down enough for me to make sure I am doing it the right way.
Struggled with this at first but have now got the hang of it. Thanks Mikey your videos are always so clear which makes it easier for me to understand.
This looks sooo nice. I've gotta try this. would love a blanket if I can manage it. multicolored would be gorgeous as well as a beige or baby pastel color. thanks Toodles~ :-D

TheGretel2381 1 year ago
this is a good video yo learn but it is very wavey when you get to 2nd or 3rd row is great but it is very wavey

Mikey:
Thank you so much for this informative video - I am using this stitch to make a nice warm sweater for my best friend for Christmas - in red heart yarn beach - initially i was afraid that the patter of the stitch would be lost in the variegated yarn color but it looks great - again thank you :-)

I always want to learn that.
Thank you!!!

Thank you for making this how to... Basket weave is my fav stitch and I always wanted to learn it..
I am making a scarf for my grandmother/ a bday present. Using the basket weave that you taught me... My only thing is I have a question..
I'm useing simply soft yarn and
My basket weave doesn't stick out like yours. Tho it is thicker..then a reg double crochet. And my = lines... Don't quite touch in spots...
Am I not doing it as tight as I should.? All in all I think it's a very good piece
Brok3nB4by 1 year ago
I'm so confused. Usually you're easy to follow but this time your words aren't as clear and you race through the first process of the weave itself. I have no clue if you are going THROUGH the pillar or just around. You don't slow down enough for me to make sure I am doing it the right way.
