According to Japenese Legion, the cat bus is something that suposedly carries the spirits of young children to the after life. Also, its assumed when young children (because only young children can) the black furry things in the being of the movie (susuwatari) and totoro, its a sign of death soon to come. The main charaters might based off of an old story about 2 sisters back in 1963. The little sister went missing and was found dead by her older sister who killed herself soon after.
