  • Wow This was so sad, so beautiful, such a great loss of young men to the wasteage of war and some other mans war at that. And what repect did they or their people recieve ... zilch nada The vision of the kuia and wahine onshore as the boat sailed off made a lasting impression It was as if they knew they would not be seeing their tane again ....powerful

  • aunty mabel is so grumpy.... but good clip!

  • Ataahua Waiata Mabel Ataahua !!

How powerful, how moving, simply beautifully sung. Makes me unbelievably proud to be Maori....

    Arohanui Jan xx

  • While I'm asking for stuff....is there anywhere I can get the kupu for this beautiful waiata? The tune is "Miss You Nights" but I never heard a reo version of it before and I really want to be able to sing it properly.

  • I never actually heard of Mabel Wharekara but I like her voice a lot. She looks like and older version the late Mahinarangi Tocker.

  • Some tribes forbabe it, some didn't, the best male taiaha pracitioners in Aotearoa was taught by women for your FYI

  • Wow...that was emotional.....cried right through thinking of all the ol' fullas who served. Mabel has such warm, strong delivery,,,,a wonderful song. Thank you for posting it! Do you have any more Mabel performances?

  • @edmusic208 Yea made me cry all the way through too. Those men went and died for this country and for our people. They were true and strong and proud....but that's not the way I'd describe many many of our young men anymore...what has happened to us?

  • I made a documentary in 2004 to commemorate the Maori Womens Welfare League---what happened to our people is largely told through their (MWWL) as they were left to deal with the aftermath...

  • @Rosina57NZ My Mother was a member of the MWWL. I was just talking to her about it yesterday. Is there anyway I could get hold of the doco that you made?

  • Thank you, I do have one other for which I will ask Mabel's permission to post on YT.

  • well just goes to show, that you learn something new everyday

  • How curious , I wasnt aware that women were entitled to employ the Taiaha?
