these will also bring local jobs,revenue and productivity despite of its negative effects.however,like in the philippines,forest dwellers burn these areas left behind by logging companies to grow their crops,for survival and leave it barren afterwards then move to another areas..are these ways of life youd want to preserve too?educating them never really worked even now.lets just drive them out from the forest land if they dont stop these activities.above all,we need more action less talk.

There needs to be a programme to re-develop Hemp growing on a worldwide scale for the fibres & pulp for paper & also hemp oils are much more productive per acre & healthier than palm! There should be BANS on importing forest wood & there should be programmes to help locals develop sustainable ways of managing forests for their natural 'products'.

But first and foremost the slash & burn must STOP!

I was in Malaysia in 2000 & the smoke from the fires in Sumatra were choking half of Asia!

With phytoplankton still losing its full photosynthesis capability, the loss of these forests I fear is too absolute, especially tropical rainforests where the diverisity in plant species is very balanced unlike a temperate zone. Good vid. People down our street are recycling the wood from a house they tore down in order to rebuild it anew with the same materials. As for hardwood furniture. No way! Five.

It's true. The only way to stop them, is to stop their cash flow. Weird, today I passed shopping areas, and people were going about their business, as if we were not in deep shit?????? They need to be hit a bit harder by reality, and soon will be. Did you hear about the Killer Whales that have vanished in the Puget Sound area. The ones that eat only Salmon. They feel a lack of food may have starvd them. I am ashamed to say, I did not know and had bought Salmon from Alaska to freeze. No more!

The companies involved include names like Sinar Mas, Duta Palma and Asian Agri which clearly aren't big brand names. They're the ones who supply the companies who make the stuff we actually buy in the shops, so unfortunately it's a bit more complicated than boycotting their products. But persuade *their* customers (companies like Unilever, Kraft, Nestle etc) to put the screws on, and get Indonesian ministers to stop the deforestation, then we've got a chance.
