Gotta put ubuntu (or other linux) server on this runs way better that what I did with myne. 200* R2 wont work on this since its not 64 bit and R2 is only 64. I did have 2008 on this but it kinda ran slowish.... and unbuntu server was very snappy and ran bukkit faster also it lets you allocate 2.5gb ram unlike windows 32 bit that only lets you use 1.5gb.
DL360 G5's are getting mucho cheap on ebay. I would start looking at G5's since they use SATA, and memory is starting to get cheap ($150-180 for 16gb -- 8x2gb ECC FB dimms). 3ghz quad cores (2x) can be had for another $175. But make sure you have a 2nd rev mobo, otherwise you're stuck at E51xx Xeons. I just upgraded a DL380G5 to above (2xQC 3ghz, 16gb) for $350 total, which will be an MS 2008 + SQL server.
I bought one to host minecraft a few months ago, it has slightly better specs than yours and im running ubuntu 10.4 on it. Too bad I don't really use it because of shit New Zealand internet (128kbs upload) Apart from that it works fine
Not sure if it's been mentioned but you said you were gonna upgrade to 12GB ram, now I've got this server myself and I ran into huge problems doing this. Firstly I had massive trouble finding a 64bit Xeon that WASNT 800MHz FSB, as the majority of these DL380 G3's have a 533MHz FSB. Therefor limiting you to 3.75GB or so. Secondly, if you happen to be unlucky enough to get one of the earlier DL380 G3's that only had a 400MHz FSB, the rated max ram is only 6GB, and it'll be very hard to find a Xeon
@cc44332211 Its better to get a 64 bit pc if you can so you can allocate more ram to minecraft. If you can get pone of these on ebay for $10 like me its not a bad deal if you put something like ubuntu server on it. Keep in mind it is noisy.
@kossy25 Not really. It can be better if you don't want to continue logging into the router everytime the server is restarted. but if you don't care about that, then not really.
I'm a litle confused, when you showed the windows server task manager, did you already upgrade it to quadore, 8Gb RAM and 4x 80Gb HDD ? Thanks in advance !
@rockerboy12doglover How can this be a quad? please tell me the xeon cpus that have the required FSB and are compatible with this server? I own one and I know that it is 32 bit and the hp website says it can onle handle single core xeon cpus. If by quad core you mean 4 threads then yes but if you mean 4 cores then please tell me what model is compatible so I can get me some :D
@rockerboy12doglover do these xeon have 800Mhz FSB? because I'm 75% positive that the board is a 533Mhz only as HP states and they never made a 533Mhz Dual core as Intel states? I have one of these so I would like to get quad core... from the cpu you have in the video its a single core not dual core. There is no 400Mhz Dual core and I can link you to a web site that says its a single core... I don't know if you checked but I think your confused because windows shows 2 cores when its threads.
@rockerboy12doglover What type of crack does he smoke? This motherboard will-not handle dual cores... look for 1 dual core with 533Mhz FSB. I can tell from your video that's a single core. So you may want to get your money back cuz he lied to you.
@0zfer I don't smoke crack! Think he knows what he is talking about more then you! Now go away and stop commenting cause to put it in a nice way you starting to annoy me
Oh and that orange light you say is always on is because of your "power supply failure" on 1/2 of your power supplies.
0zfer 2 days ago
@0zfer Yes, I know, both power supplies are fine, just the second one isnt plugged in and also because I dont have the other CPU Installed

Shall I Get One? For Minecraft?

@cc44332211 You can do. Although you can use a normal desktop pc for Minecraft, they can host one just fine.

Just wondering is it important to have a static ip if you want to run a server ? E.g for minecraft or mumble

@rockerboy12doglover you are mistaken those are hyper threaded single cores not dual-cores :P

@0zfer I spoke with the owner that had this machine before me and he had two dual cores in this, they are not singles, he used cpu-z to check that.
