Someone came from British Columbia told me that there are lots of oil wells that are capped and no company wants to use it because it would force the price of gasoline to fall below $0.50 per litre. And it would allow Canada to become independant from foreign oil. Well? Then then is no need for tar sands. Trillions of barrels yet no one want to extract that oil from the wells in Pink Mountain.
What do cars use to go? Oil. What do the Tar sands give us? Oil. What are we really in the middle east for? Oil. Where is the largest deposit of oil? Here. WE are risking lives of many for oil in the middle east, WHEN WE HAVE THE WORLDS BIGGEST DEPOSIT HERE.
Exactly!!! We need to GROW!!! We need to make MONEY!! How could digging up hundreds of square miles and using billions of gallons of water to wash OIL out of the sand POSSIBLY have a negative effect on the environment?? Who CARES if it turns a beautiful boreal forest into a WASTELAND?? We have to drive to Taco Bell you know!! Are you STUPID. Fucking Greenies!!
The water in polluted before it passes through Fort McMurray. And not by Man-Kind. Your flawless mother nature is responsible for that one, oil bubbles out of the river banks when it gets hot, don't believe me go for a canoe ride up stream of Fort Mac, your boat with be covered with thick black stick oil.
Solar power doesn't kill. Those who think sucking the Earth dry and toxifying our water and air are going to bring them more money as if the environment has no value are morally irresponsible IDIOTS. You have nothing without a sustainable planet. IDIOTS.
Sustainable Shnainable!! You've seen one tree you've seen them all. Let's cut them down!! We need GAS for our CARS! There's NO way I'm going to give up my energy consuming lifestyle! Anyway, what is northern Alberta good for anyway?? You've seen one forest, you've seen them ALL. When we poison the animals, we can see them in the ZOO!! Are you crazy?? We have to make MONEY!!! We have to buy new TVs!!! And other STUFF!!
Typical response. Perhaps they would have less of a chance of needing a hospital if not for the toxins you support digging out of the ground that make them sick. And solar can be stored 24 hrs. It is already being done in other countries. Time to get into the 21 st century.
@waterforpeople There are no toxins in the air, the tar sand operation is one of the cleaning in the world. Before your judge a place you've never been
are you deliberately lying or do you actually believe the line you are spinning!?
Thousands of people are being negatively affected by the industrial pollution of the tar sands, not to mention cutting down thousands of acres of Boreal forest could not possibly be helpful on an environmental scale.
Go shill on the the National Post Website, or better yet read a book and learn some facts
@kidzed84 oh, what do you do for a living, party I guess. That is the different between you and me, I work and pay taxes, you party and still go to school. I wish I could not work and party all day. But no, I work and even thow I'm only 17 that is makes me a canadian citizen and i'm glad that I'm not a overgrown 26 year old manchild that still goes to school rather than get a job.
bet you don't make a 2 grand a week me making more than somewone went to university.
@kidzed84 you should read a book dope!!!MILLIONS of ppl are negatively affected by the emissions in California! Are you on there youtube pages telling them not to drive asshole? you have driven a car, took a bus rode a plane etc....You should go read a book and learn some facts
Again- an argument that is unfettered by facts or logic. The tar sands extraction uses more energy than it produces.
If global society cannot produce a green/sustainable technology that does not 1) destroy the environment 2) kill the very people that extract it 3) poison the indigenous people who live nearby- what kind of civilisation is that?
A very flawed one. Why are you discussing California? We are discussing Alberta, but fossil fuels in particular. I take public transit btw;)
@kidzed84 Listen we get it fettered and unfettered are your fav. words u start every sentence with them! Now go and dont u dare use a single drop of oil or gas or turn a furnace on but go jump on a bus go down to your local library and curl up wit a good Ursula Leguin book and quit fighting everyone on youtube!!!
everyone? i am not fighting anyone. I am simply espousing a humanist opinion to which, obviously, you are very opposed. You may mock me, but all it exposes is your simplistic contextualisation of the human condition to very uni-dimensional talking points. If you had an argument or opinion that related some aspect of reality- i.e. facts, i expect we should have seen it several posts ago.
@kidzed84@kidzed84 Listen we get it fettered and unfettered are your fav. words u start every sentence with them! Now go and dont u dare use a single drop of oil or gas or turn a furnace on but go jump on a bus go down to your local library and curl up wit a good Ursula Leguin book and quit fighting everyone on youtube!!! oh and to answer yer question "What kind of society is that?" THE ONE U AND I LIVE IN! and i think u know that nothings going to change
And about the books comment- i read hundreds of books per year-> Noam Chomsky, Derrick Jensen, Vandana Shiva, Amy Goodman, Murray Bookchin, Bill Mckibben, Naomi Klein, Emma Goldman, and a multitude of fictions and non fictions particularly sci fi (william gibson, phil k dick, ursula leguin), and historical non fiction-> at the moment i am interested in indigenous resistance in Canada, and the US labour movement. But i also enjoy area studies and political philosophies;)
And the fact is- you don't know any of the seminal authors i listed and how they influenced pop culture and literary studies to such a degree that we now use words they coined in their works. Another name for sci fi is "speculative fiction" as in using concepts and constructs of our world to imagine one that is radically different.
Through the lens of speculative fiction one can readily deconstruct destructive forces existing in our contemporary world.
@kidzed84 i think ure the one who may be ignorant of the facts. heres some more:I work for many oil companies and have risided in fort mac and throughout Alberta i do know a little about this. While you sit there with a thesaurus i am at work devoloping the next possible prospect areas to explore drilling. P.S. i have never seen fox news in my life
It says a lot about YOUR imagination: the ability to think critically and radically different, that you are STILL unable to form a concise argument outside of personal attacks...It demonstrates how clearly ignorant you are of facts and totally devoid of empathetic response for people in peril. I pity you that your opinions have been so mal-formed by neo-con blather and fox news propaganda.
@kidzed84 listen...ignorant of the facts? Im not not trying to be in a youtube war with u but i'll give u 1 fact that trumps anything:The world needs oil simply put. If there were alternative ways to fuel the world im sure people would have done them by now! Until that day THE WORLD NEEDS OIL. im not opposed to your humanist oppinion and what you are saying, simply debating you. Heres some more facts:my oppinions are formed from 2 masters degrees in geophysics and earth sciences
I also have post grad degrees albeit in the humanities and social sciences. This does not make me an expert in
any one subject. The fact that you work in the oil and gas industry makes you biased. This video is about how the tar sands extraction is destroying indigenous communities (polluting hunting/fishing areas, birth defects, continuation of colonial policies...) these are FACTS. it is also destroying the CDN wilderness, removing a boreal forest the size of the UK.
You can justify your name-calling and yarn-spinning (a colloquialism not from a thesaurus;)) however you want, it does not characterise yourself or your so-called "points" well or effectively. The world may NEED oil; however the tar sands extraction provides a NET ENERGY LOSS. So while you plan where next to drill, I will be building a cleaner, fairer more just society.
@kidzed84 i dont recall personally attacking u and if i did i do apologize, for i dont know you or anything about you. My oppinions are mine and i have a right to them as you do, but to call them ignorant is ridiculous i work in the oil and gas industry and have for over a decade have 10 yrs of schooling in this after i graduated high school. No need for pitty here my oppinions are mine and are generated from my own POV. Not sum news corp. shoving propaganda down my throat.
I noticed you did not mention any of the other (multitude) of authors and genres I listed; instead you choose the one (sci fi) you believed you could use to insult me. YOU demonstrate your own total lack of understanding of both the environment and humanist issues. You may SAY you do not oppose my humanist values, yet you continue to challenge my person and the issue at hand (which is beyond verifiable). This is the reason i used the phrase "unfettered by facts."
@kidzed84 again i do not oppose your humanist values, i chose the author because of a unique name and nothing else. I'm really not sure how else to convey the point of the world needs oil "effevtively" but that is the fact. Albeit your prolly right my oppinion is in fact biased and your points are valid my only rebutle is, and always was the world needs oil.make no mistake, the side effects u mentioned may be credible. the FACT remains the world needs oil! for now at least.
What do you suggest when the sands have been rung dry and the next generation is swimming in your swine water? first nations folks never asked oil companies to come destroy their land, their hands are completely tied as they have been since our ancestors arrived in the first place. We have fucked over an entire people so shove your selfish comments up your ass. Yeah they are rich and reaping the benefits, I suppose you need to say this to yourselves so you can look in the mirror each day.
if i had it mine way i would live like the old ways like our grandfathers and ansisters lived back in the day we have no choice to live like this untell the fucken tar sands came into our lives and no we do not get anymoney for this shit we just suffer
Maybe if those bands didnt take the handouts that they get from the oil companies i would feel more sorry for them. But considering people that live in mckay have larger houses then mot people in mcmurray and they are FREE plus large cash Cheques from THE OIL COMPANIES, i figure they sold their health and their way of life for a new SUV.
your an idiot , people in mckay pay rent only reserve in canada that pays rent to live in pollution && its the chief who sells out his people , read the papers bud mckay people are fighting amongst each other over theese issues .
@Rushworshiper92 I Wasn't bashing oil. Hell I'm pro oil. Oil runs through my veins, we work for the companies, but if we didn't my views wouldn't change.
@jason74ftchip You stop buying, we stop making. Oil has become as much of our society as air and water. Think, if we didn't who would? I'm sure the US wouldn't be happy, who knows then, they lose their supply of oil and other things such as lumber? This leads to many questions about this, and the problem is it is a double edged sword. As we need oil to live (I know we could live without but, lets not kid ourselves) we also need water etc. Thanks for reading, hope for your reply.
Alberta now produces 26 % of Canada's greenhouse gas emissions, thanks to projects like these in the oil sands. I hope more native bands increase their pressure on the government to exercise their treaty rights. This is bullshit.
I'd rather be getting oil from Bin Laden, at least they are not polluting great rivers to get oil.

you cannot even engage the subject of the tar sands, and you engage in ad hominem attacks.

perhaps what YOU need is take some remedial classes in discourse and critical thinking.
