"make sure you can touch the ground" is for kids who have just gotten on a bike, its better to have a good pedaling position, so you can get ur muscles used to it, rather than think touching the ground is better.
Have you never cleaned oil from something before? Just use hot soapy water. There are degreasers on the market, but make sure they say they are safe for use on rubber.
@darkskullxxx Its important. Its a safety feature of your bike. If you ride your bike during the evening, cars behind you might not see you, especially if you're wearing dark clothing, riding a dark bike.
@holkemann am i right in thinking that wd40 actually is not really suitable for lubricating chains as it is more of a degreaser than a lubricant personally i think gt30 is one of the most suitable products as a lubricant for bikes
My bike havent been used in a long time. We also do not have a garage so its been outside and the chain is rusty, along with many parts of the bike. Would following this video help or am i better off buying a new bike?
Dont forget to reply from my comment so i can get it!!!
you can remove exterior rust from the frame and rims, make sure to get a new chain but one thing that wil probly make or break the bike is rust on th moveable parts of the bike if the chain is rusty then hopefully the derailers
(spelling) and gear componets arent if so and its not exactly a top of the line bike anyway i suggest getting a new one
ive been restoring and fixing bicycles for a few years now and know what i am talkin about,
the best thing to do is buy a brand new bike and clean it once a week checking that there is no damage to the bike,
replacing any rusty parts can be costly and not worth the hassle, you could also try buying a seecond hand bike from a proffesional bicycle rider as they take care of their bikes,
awesome! thanks, i've been watching tons of videos on how to clean a bike but most vids say you should buy specialized brushes and cleaning tools. it's great to know there's household items you can use. :D
thats ok as long as you re-lubricate EVERYTHING after you're done. Also you're likely to strip the stickers on your frame/forks/etc more easily (if that bothers you)
Indeed, we are living in the age of smart phones and stupid people...

Using a toothbrush on the braking surface of the rims is a nice idea. Thanks. Also, I did not know there was a proper chain brush available.

Here's a few more tips:
1. remember that all your bearings and Bottom Bracket need regular checking.
Remove the bottom bracket with the required tool at least once a year. This is smart, because you're prventing water to gather in there.
/
You can also remove the bottom bracket and drill a small hole right under the bottom bracket, trough the frame, so the water can escape there.
If you do have suspension on your bike, use WD-40 (or such lubes) and spray a little bit on the....
