Siouxsie & The Banshees formed in September 1976 and disbanded in 1996, whereas Xmal formed in 1980 and disbanded in 1990. Many bands had this particular Gothic Rock sound during the 80's and Anja Huwe certainly does sound like the German answer to Siouxsie.

Look at her she is a beautiful dark Teutonic ice queen who writes wonderful poetry about incubi /sucubi and mournful subject matter and they performed in dark cavernous clubs. it couldn't be anything but gothic

Me and my mate 'lefty' saw them in London. We met with Anyita(?) afterwards in a pub and bought her a pint. She liked the way we had shredded the sleeves of our X-Mal T-Shirts. Such Cred!!! Used to do the 'Qual Run' on the way back from Camden in my Vauxhall Chevette - Amersham to Wendover in the time it took to play Qual. Memories.

What Xmal Deutschland brought was a raw sound like early Siouxsie had originally, but by 1985 she was doing her transition to alt-pop. For those who weren't there in 1977 with the Banshees, 1985 and Xmal Deutschland was our time. And Anja was sexy.

I saw this band in 1986 supporting TheStranglers on their Dreamtime tour-must admit the Siouxise influences are even more apparent now-the vocals remind me of Carcass by the Banshees-but they are still a decent band!!
