@manholoblahnik Is it entirely impossible for two different people to come up with the same idea completely independent of each other? Because I seriously doubt Dan Smith listens to Bright Eyes (having met the man and opening for Listener at their last show of their last tour). The fact is that Dan Smith is brilliant, and it's perfectly plausible that he came up with that brilliant line on his own, without "stealing" it, or "borrowing" it from Conor Oberst. Archetypes exist.
@Oversex of course he's brilliant, i wasn't trying to implement anything else, i just couldn't believe the two of them used the exact same words, all i'm saying is that one of them might have heard/seen lyrics of the other, i did not say one was stealing them, i just wanted to know, if anyone knew anything about it cause it didn't seem like a coincidence to me, it could have been a line in some movie.
@manholoblahnik This is most silly reductivist comment possible on something like this. I read your follow up, but still... if you listen for that, or even allow yourself to fall into that trap, you miss the point. Not like I know sh*+ about the band, but I feel the emotion and let it carry what I hear, as opposed to quantify and qualify the oblique reference that may or may not be. PS. I long for paragraph breaks in these comments.
@lpfreak1708 There is. Look on itunes. Type in Listener, go under songs, and it should be under the album welcome to struggleville or something like that. It's sick.
I tried finding his stuff on itunes, and it didnt have a version that sounded like this. It was just his voice. Don't get me wrong, the words are amazing, but there was something about the track that he rapped over that made the whole thing flow seamlessly...
It sickens me all the fake "musicians" who make millions, using auto tune, having people writing songs for them, masses of money for marketing. And then there is Dan Smith an actual genius who gets nothing. But I can guarantee you he is happier than any of these fakers.
@parlanewastaken Bro.... Too fucking true. I like your synopsis. First time I heard a 'Listener' song, I could feel the passion in my bones. Unlike the so called artists that do make millions, no passion what so ever.
He's like a hybrid of Aaron Weiss of Mewithoutyou and Craig Finn from The Hold Steady: amazing lyrics that paints beautiful pictures and an amazing delivery for them. Completely amazing.
The first time I saw Listener, I was like wtf? I'll never forget how he was wearing brown sweatpants with black shoes and kept rocking back and forth. But halfway through the first song I was crying and I've been obsessed ever since. Such a great musician and a true poet. <3
@bastlake I think Death by a Shotgun but then I Have Nothing But Attention When I Scream definitely did. That was on the Return to Struggleville tour, like three years ago now, I think. Beautiful.
Just saw this guy tonight in fort smith arkansas, like an hour away from his home town, he is sooo good live, like if youre watching his performance youre completely entranced. Its amazing
