Because I seriously doubt Dan Smith listens to Bright Eyes (having met the man and opening for Listener at their last show of their last tour). The fact is that Dan Smith is brilliant, and it's perfectly plausible that he came up with that brilliant line on his own, without "stealing" it, or "borrowing" it from Conor Oberst. Archetypes exist.

The first time I saw Listener, I was like wtf? I'll never forget how he was wearing brown sweatpants with black shoes and kept rocking back and forth. But halfway through the first song I was crying and I've been obsessed ever since. Such a great musician and a true poet. <3
