I have an appointment with the dealership I got my Jeep from tomorrow. I am still within the factory warranty, AND have an extended warranty. Do you think this will be covered?
@TheErica0122 Sorry to hear that! My truck hasn't done it in about 43000 miles. It turned out being my tires. It came with Michellen LTX's. It stopped after I switched to a set of 285/70/17 Firestone Destination A/T's and a new steering damper. I was told that if your truck does the dw once, your steering damper is toast.
As mechanic I've come across this problem both on my own truck and a few customers vehicles. I'm not sure which city you're in, but if you were in Houston I'd fix it for you at a good price.
The problem is caused by tie-rods going out. when there is too much play in them and the the pittman/idler arm the entire vehicle shudders.
This problems leads to greater problems quickly, it can warp the rotors, warp the tires themselves, not to mention that it can cause a major accident! The sooner you can get the tie-rods, rotors and brakes replaced, the better. It might pay to take the truck to a firestone. they will gladly tell you you have a million problems with suspension. i wouldn't pay them any money for the work, but still... knowledge is power.
We have a F-350 2006 with a death wobble and after several trips to the dealership and $3800 later and not fixed, it was finally fixed at Les Schwab with a new caster (sp?). Drove all the way from Sac to Seattle and back and not a lick of problems. Death wobble is so very scary and I'm glad our truck is fixed!!
If you are trading it in for a ford, they do the death wobble too....i have only seen it in the gas trucks for some reason though, never seen it in the diesels.
Hey I got a suggestion why doesn't everyone look at the video real close at 25 seconds the dumb ass is driving on the shoulder on the rumble strips which obviously causes it to shake like shit and it stops when hes pulled back onto the smooth highway.
@ethanmcd watch who you call a dumb ass. It may appear that Im on the rumble strips, but you are obviously confused by the viewing angle. See, when you are in the drivers seat it may appear that you are "riding the line", as for the passenger side appears that you are "riding the center line".
@danieladamdelarosa lol hes the dumbass man, rumble strips arent that rough and not to mention create a distinct sound! I went racing with a friend in a 2001 hit 85 and swore we were going to die! toasted pass. wheel bearing both ball joints and had to replace the sway bar!
@ethanmcd lol rumble strips dont cause a vehicle to shake like hell, they make noise and a slight vibration. Good insight though. Maybe next time you can think before you right something. death wabble is very real and it can be fixed. just an engeneering flaw.
what year does this happen i mean what year models my dads 04 ram has 306,000 on it and it doesnt do this but if your doing 70 down the highway and sway left to right very fast the truck feels like your driving on glass and feels like you could lose control
Track bar, steering linkage, steering gear, ball joints, springs, bushings, frame movement etc. Also jack up the front end and check ball joints, linkage, wheel bearings etc. If the truck is lifted and everything is tight, try backing off on the caster (less positive/ more negative) and use a good stabilizer.
Wheel balance and bent wheels can obviously cause DW too.
First off Check the front end especially the track bar by having an assistant rock the steering wheel back and fourth with the wheels on the ground. Observe the front axle and see if anything is moving laterally or axially that shouldn't be.
No lift or leveling kit? Thats usually when this kicks in..if you do have a leveling kit and some bigger tires the usual suspect is caster. I believe it +3 caster. Check a forum like cumminsforum or dtr....oh and tightening my steering box killed dw on my 94 4x4..freebie for ya.
That's not death wobble..... That's a caster shimmy(toe in problem). Death wobble is your entire axle moving side to side and more violent than that and it feels like it's gonna rip the steering wheel right out of your hands, there is a fix for it. Do your research. But keep in mind what works for one person might not work for you. Check your drag link length in comparison to your track bar.
To all people saying this is a Ford problem too, as a former Dodge "and" Ford truck owner, even have a family member with a fleet of trucks, I've never seen this issue on a Ford, always Dodge. Dodge uses car grade suspension in the front end of their trucks PERIOD contributing to premature suspension problems. If you look at the control arms and other components on the Ford they are larger and more durable. Dodge has been known for premature front end issues for years. Good luck with the issue!
To anybody who thinks this just a Dodge problem, your wrong, Ford super duty trucks have the same problem all you gotta do is look for it in any search engine!
my work truck is an 09 2500 with a hemi. it only has 40,000 km and has a real bad case of this...replacing the steering dampener didnt help this much. brutal, i hope some warranty work will resolve this
Death wobble can be caused by anything and everything. Nothing on my 05 steering is stock. I've replaced everything from the actual gear box to the linkage, ball joints everything. Hadn't seen death wobble in over 90k miles. Now it does it every time i drive it. This time it looks like a bad set of tires. Dodge will never fess up to it, oh well. We by these trucks for the Cummins and nothing else.
@danieladamdelarosa Dude you can get a Ford, but if you look right here on You Tube under Ford-F250 "death wobble" you will see the truck in the video does it every bit as bad as yours, maybe even worse,so it's not just Dodge.
@cappy032 yeah exactly. it can happen to any velicle. not allways a recal issus. mostly its from something being changed. the tires lift or just wear and tear on track bar. and ti rod ends.
@danieladamdelarosa man this happened to my dad and i... i just about shit myself it was 10x as bad as this on a small road we almost hit a sewage truck head on
@danieladamdelarosa For god sake dont get a ford. Bad transmissions and shotty balljoints. Im sure a new Ram HD wont let you down, they've changed their game. Its amazing what a near bankruptcy can do to a company.
@MCHughes88 its the tie rod ends and drag link ends mines a 95 2500hd and its lifted 6 inches and a new damper would help with that too death wobble sucks and is scary
haha I know what thats like! you might wanna try some different tires. Or maybe just change the air pressure. Mine went away when i changed my tie rods and steering box... but my truck has 260k miles.

@Dontneedtostroke Not on the strips tool. I made another video to show those of you that are a bit slow, or not used to sitting in the drivers seat.
danieladamdelarosa 5 months ago
@ethanmcd Wrong, he did that to slow down. My truck just started to do it and I have a '90 dodge ram half ton.
I have to pull off to the side and come to complete stop. Rumble strips wouldn't make that kind of shake/vibration
