Although Chihiro begins the story as something of a whiner, her experiences give her a sense of perspective, and as the story goes on she displays courage, grace under pressure, courtesy, compassion, integrity, and other virtues.

At the beginning, we see how she displays a lot of immaturity (such as whining and sulking), but as the movie progresses, she develops into someone who is more perceptive to her surroundings, and we also see her becoming more of an adult in the way she behaves and thinks. That's my interpretation anyway (;

@Wwpatricia When Chihiro was little, her shoe fell into the Kohaku River. She tried to pick it up but fell in instead. She thought she was going to drown but Haku, being the river spirit, sent her to shallow water. Hence, in the anime, whenever Chihiro rides on Haku in his dragon form, she'll have the impression of submerging in running water. It was explained near the end of the anime when Chihiro was travelling back to the bathhouse from Zeniba's place and finally remembered Haku's name.
